Nation of Islam: founding

Founded 4 July 1930 in Detroit by Wallace Fard Muhammad. Elijah Muhammad led it from 1934 to 1975. His son W. D. Mohammed then moved the body toward Sunni Islam, and Louis Farrakhan re-established the original Nation in 1977. Its headquarters is Mosque Maryam in Chicago.

Nation of Islam: size

Membership is small and never officially published. A 2007 estimate was about 50,000, and other estimates run from 10,000 to 50,000. Its reach comes from Farrakhan's audience, not its membership rolls.

Hebrew Israelites: origins

The radical camps grew out of the 'One West' movement founded in Harlem in the 1960s by Abba Bivens. The best-known groups today are Israel United in Christ (IUIC, founded 2003), ISUPK and Great Millstone.

IIOrigins

Genesis vector

Early twentieth-century Black religious movements in northern American cities; the Nation of Islam's institutional formation and later reorganisation; Hebrew Israelite currents proliferating into many independent and mutually hostile camps.

IIIWhat They Hold

Ideological base

Distinct movements grouped here by a shared structure rather than a shared creed: each advances a genealogical or restorationist claim that Black Americans hold a scriptural identity obscured by history, and each builds an institution around that claim.

IVHow They Are Governed

Hierarchy & roles

Ministers and a formal organisational structure in the Nation of Islam; in the Hebrew Israelite currents, camp elders and teachers with authority that does not extend past the camp.

VThe Sword & The State

The largest Black demonstration

Farrakhan's 1995 Million Man March in Washington is described as the largest Black demonstration in US history. It was the NOI's peak of public power.

Separation from the state

The NOI teaches Black separatism and rejects integration, and it keeps its own disciplined security wing, the Fruit of Islam. Malcolm X was its most famous minister until he left in 1964. Three NOI men were convicted of his 1965 assassination, but two of them, Muhammad Aziz and Khalil Islam, were exonerated on 18 November 2021 after withheld FBI records came to light. Mujahid Abdul Halim, who admitted the shooting, always said they were not involved.

Monitored as hate groups

The SPLC lists the NOI and many radical Hebrew Israelite organisations as hate groups, chiefly for antisemitism. The ADL keeps its own NOI profile.

VIInside the Doors

Memetic payload

The revealed-identity claim — a reframing of history and scripture that reassigns who the reader is, delivered through street preaching and, more recently, video.

Compression format

Street preaching; the confrontation clip; the lesson; the newspaper.

Platform substrate

Storefront congregations and street corners, organisational newspapers, YouTube channels run both by members and by adversaries

From Ring III #54 · compiled, not founder-reviewed

VIIWhere They Stand Now

Structural position

Strongly bounded, internally plural, and almost always narrated from outside rather than mapped — the camps in particular are known publicly through confrontation footage produced by observers.

Node centrality

Low by connection, high by how often it is narrated — the gap between the two is the finding.

XAbove · Around · Below

Edge weight

Heavy inbound EXTRACTION — its material circulates mainly as footage captured by hostile observers; near-zero acknowledged exchange with anything else on the map.

Intertextuality

Responds immediately to racial and political events, read through the identity claim.

XITheir Case

The NOI's case

The NOI's case is dignity through separation: Black people as a divine people who should build their own economy, schools and discipline rather than seek a place in white America. Mainstream Muslims reject its theology, including Fard Muhammad as God incarnate, as heretical.

Wikipedia: Nation of Islam · read 2026-10-05 · summary of the body's case

The Hebrew Israelite case

The Hebrew Israelite case is a reclaimed lineage: that Black, Hispanic and Native American peoples are the true Israelites of scripture. In the radical camps this becomes the antisemitic claim that Jews stole that identity.

The only real Jews on the planet are the black, Hispanic, and native Indians.

XIIThe Ledger

Economic model

Congregational and organisational giving; small-business and self-sufficiency programmes; publishing and street-level distribution.

From Ring III #54 · compiled, not founder-reviewed

XIIIStrengths & Fault-Lines

Internal factions

Extensive and mutually antagonistic. The Nation of Islam is organisationally distinct from every Hebrew Israelite camp; the camps differ sharply among themselves, and the more confrontational street groups are disavowed by quieter congregations who share the identity claim but not the method.

Context-collapse vulnerability

Very high, and almost entirely involuntary: what reaches the public is street confrontation footage selected by outsiders, not teaching selected by members.

Velocity & mutation

High in the camp layer, where teaching authority is unbounded and video propagates confrontations quickly; low in the Nation of Islam's formal doctrine.

Ishmael Muhammad

Student National Assistant Minister at Mosque Maryam, a son of Elijah Muhammad, and long seen as Farrakhan's likely successor. He gave the closing keynote at Saviours' Day 2021, a sermon Farrakhan traditionally gives himself.
