American Freemasonry

Grand lodges reported 869,429 members to the Masonic Service Association of North America for 2023; allowing for duplicate memberships, the true number is nearer 785,000. The peak was 4,103,161 in 1959, so membership is down about 80%. It fell from 1,964,008 in 2008, losing more than 1.1 million in fifteen years.

English Freemasonry

The United Grand Lodge of England describes itself as a membership organisation of about 175,000 people in more than 7,000 lodges. Its Pro Grand Master has called membership the absolute priority for at least the next three years.

IIOrigins

Genesis vector

Early modern operative-to-speculative transition; eighteenth-century formalisation; enormous nineteenth-century American expansion; sustained membership decline since the 1960s.

IIIWhat They Hold

Ideological base

Not a religion and explicitly not offered as one — a fraternal order transmitting moral instruction through allegory and ritual, requiring belief in a supreme being without specifying which, and forbidding sectarian dispute within the lodge.

From Ring III #55 · compiled, not founder-reviewed

IVHow They Are Governed

Hierarchy & roles

Grand lodges with jurisdictional sovereignty; lodge officers by election; a degree system as the internal ladder; appendant bodies with their own structures; the Prince Hall lineage as a parallel and historically separate jurisdiction.

VThe Sword & The State

Rome's standing prohibition

In November 2023 (made public on the 15th) the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith, in a reply signed by Pope Francis and Cardinal Fernández, reaffirmed that active membership in Freemasonry is forbidden to Catholics because the two are irreconcilable. It was answering Bishop Julito Cortes of Dumaguete, who reported Masonic membership rising among his flock.

The Philippine front

The Dicastery asked the Philippine bishops to make a public statement and to teach in every parish why the faith and Freemasonry cannot be held together. That makes the Philippines the current point of contact between Masonic growth and church discipline.

VIInside the Doors

Memetic payload

Ritual instruction, transmitted only in person by design — which means the movement produces almost no propagatable content and cannot easily answer accounts made about it.

Compression format

The degree ritual; the tracing board; the apron and regalia; the monitor.

Platform substrate

Lodge buildings, grand-lodge publications, charitable hospitals, almost no native online presence

VIIWhere They Stand Now

Structural position

Structurally silent and heavily narrated. It has no outward media strategy and is a permanent subject for Ring 1 #10 and #53 — a body whose public existence is composed almost entirely of other people's descriptions of it.

Node centrality

Near zero by its own participation, high by frequency of mention — the largest asymmetry between being discussed and discussing on the entire map.

IXTheir Take on the Machine

Use it, under the craft's virtues

No grand lodge has issued a ruling, but the Grand Lodge of Pennsylvania's own magazine weighed AI's 'risks and rewards'. On the reward side: administration, member engagement and recruitment. On the risk side: privacy and the erosion of the in-person bond the lodge exists for. The test it sets is Masonic virtue.

Transparency, accountability and ethical use of AI are critical.

Already in the lodges

Individual lodges and provinces are experimenting openly: Somerset Freemasons (UGLE) wrote up AI's potential in February 2025, and a lodge blog published ChatGPT's answer on 'the benefits of Freemasonry'.

Edge weight

Enormous inbound EXTRACTION from #10 and #53 with no outbound reply; historical FRAME contribution to #56's founders; SERVICE outbound through the charitable foundations.

Intertextuality

Essentially none. It does not respond to events, which leaves every account of it uncontested.

XITheir Case

Not a religion

UGLE's 1985 statement holds that Freemasonry is not a religion and not a substitute for one. It requires belief in a Supreme Being but defines no doctrine of him, so men of different faiths can pray together, each to God as he understands God.

Masonry is not a religion or a substitute of religion

Why the churches disagree

This is exactly the point Rome and many Protestant bodies dispute. A shared prayer to an undefined Supreme Being is, to them, a religious act in its own right.

XIIThe Ledger

Economic model

Dues, lodge property, and very large charitable foundations — hospitals and burn centres among them — which constitute the majority of its public footprint and almost none of its public reputation.

From Ring III #55 · compiled, not founder-reviewed

XIIIStrengths & Fault-Lines

Internal factions

Jurisdictional differences over recognition, most consequentially the long-contested recognition between mainstream and Prince Hall grand lodges; traditionalists vs modernisers over secrecy and recruitment as membership falls.

Context-collapse vulnerability

Total, and structural rather than accidental: a body committed to not explaining itself in public cannot correct anything said about it.

Velocity & mutation

Extremely low internally — ritual invariance is the point. Extremely high externally, where claims about it mutate without any constraint from the body itself.
