Opened 2026-07-26 · verified 2026-07-26

A field file on a person in a public role, from the public record. Private lines (family, health, home, security, personal wealth) are kept at home and not shown.

I · Identity

Full legal name
Roberto Pasolini, O.F.M. Cap. — a friar of the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin.
Name in office
Preacher of the Papal Household. The friar who preaches to the pope.
The distinction ★
He has a computer science degree, and his thesis was on artificial intelligence. Information Science, University of Milan, 1996 — taken the year before he entered religious life. In a hall built to ask what fifteen religions think about the machine, the only person in the Roman government with a formal technical education in it is the man who preaches to the pope.
Date of birth
5 November 1971 — age 54. The youngest person in this suit.
Place of birth
Milan, Italy.
Nationality
Italian.
Languages partial
Italian, plus biblical Hebrew and Greek — he taught biblical languages for a living. Modern languages not verified.

II · The Likeness & the Ground

Places of operation
Four pins, all northern Italian or Roman — the smallest map in the suit after Reina's. But read the first pin carefully. The University of Milan, 1996, a thesis on artificial intelligence. That single line makes this the most interesting map here, because it is the only pin in the whole deck that starts inside the machine rather than inside the Church.
  1. Milan1971 — born · 1996 the thesis · 1997 the habit
Born 5 November 1971. Took a degree in Information Science at the University of Milan in 1996, with a thesis on artificial intelligence — and entered the Capuchins the following year. Later taught biblical languages and Scripture at the Capuchins' Laurentianum institute here.
  2. Venicetaught
The other campus of the Laurentianum Interprovincial Theological Institute, where he lectured in biblical languages and sacred Scripture.
  3. Romedoctorate
Doctorate in biblical theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University.
  4. Vatican City2024– · the pulpit
Preacher of the Papal Household from 9 November 2024, and a member of the Dicastery for Communication since 2026.

III · The Office

Exact title
Preacher of the Papal Household — by ancient custom held by a Capuchin friar, and the only man permitted to preach to the pope.
Held since
Appointed 9 November 2024 by Pope Francis.
Whom he replaced ★
Cardinal Raniero Cantalamessa, who held the post for forty-four years. Pasolini is the first new papal preacher since 1980.
What he does ★
Preaches the weekly Advent and Lenten sermons to the pope and the Roman Curia, and the Good Friday homily at St Peter's Basilica. Three or four times a year he stands in front of the entire Roman government and tells it what it needs to hear.
The second seat ★
Member of the Dicastery for Communication since 2026 — the department responsible for how the Holy See speaks to the world, including digitally. The computer scientist has been put on the communications body.
How he got it
Appointed by the pope. A teaching friar with a Gregorian doctorate, chosen after a forty-four-year incumbency ended.
Who can remove him
Leo XIV, at will — though on the precedent of his predecessor, this is an office men keep for decades.
Term
None. Cantalamessa served under John Paul II, Benedict XVI and Francis. On that pattern Pasolini could still be preaching to popes in the 2060s.

IV · The Power

Scope
One room — but it is the room containing the pope and the heads of every Roman dicastery.
Hard power
None at all. He governs nothing, appoints nobody, signs nothing. The purest case in this deck of influence entirely divorced from authority.
Soft power ★
Unmediated access to the papal conscience, several times a year, by right of office. He does not need an appointment, a memorandum or a superior's permission to say something to the pope. Nobody else in this suit has that.
The Good Friday homily
Preached in St Peter's Basilica before the pope and broadcast worldwide. The single largest pulpit any card in this suit is handed, and it comes once a year without asking.
The Communication seat ★
Membership of the Dicastery for Communication from 2026 gives him an institutional voice in how the Holy See handles media and digital platforms — a real portfolio to go with the pulpit, and a strange one to give a preacher unless his technical background was the point.
Chain of command
Answers to Leo XIV (A♠) and effectively to nobody else. The Preacher sits inside the Papal Household, not the Curia proper.
Budget
None of consequence. The office is a man and a pulpit.
Staff
None recorded.

V · Formation

THE FIRST DEGREE ★
Information Science, University of Milan, 1996 — with a thesis on artificial intelligence. He was a computer scientist before he was anything else. He studied this subject when it was an academic backwater, thirty years before his employer made it the defining question of a pontificate.
Entered religion
Joined the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin in 1997 — the year after the thesis. Perpetual profession 2002, ordained priest 2006.
Second education
Doctorate in biblical theology, Pontifical Gregorian University, Rome. He crossed from information science to Scripture — and both are, in their way, the study of how meaning is carried in signs.
The teaching years
Professor of biblical languages and sacred Scripture at the Capuchins' Laurentianum Interprovincial Theological Institute, in Milan and Venice.
The climb
1996 degree in Information Science, Milan · 1997 enters the Capuchins · 2002 perpetual profession · 2006 ordained priest · doctorate in biblical theology, Gregorian · professor at the Laurentianum · 9 Nov 2024 Preacher of the Papal Household · 2026 member of the Dicastery for Communication.
The Capuchin custom
The office of papal preacher has been reserved to the Capuchins for centuries — one of the oldest surviving customs in the Roman household, and the reason a friar from a teaching institute in Milan ended up in front of the pope.

VI · The Ties

Known associates ★
His predecessor: Cardinal Raniero Cantalamessa, papal preacher for forty-four years — still living, and the standard against which Pasolini will be measured.Who appointed him: Pope Francis, November 2024. Deceased.Whom he now preaches to: Leo XIV (A♠) and the entire Roman Curia — which is to say, every other card in this suit sits in his congregation. His order: the Capuchins, who hold this office by custom. His new department: the Dicastery for Communication, from 2026.The card he should be talking to: Abp Thibault Verny (4♠), whose Commission is studying technology-facilitated abuse of minors — the only other card in this suit treating the machine as a technical subject rather than a philosophical one.
Timeline
5 Nov 1971 born, Milan · 1996 degree in Information Science, University of Milan — thesis on artificial intelligence · 1997 enters the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin · 2002 perpetual profession · 2006 ordained priest · doctorate in biblical theology, Pontifical Gregorian University · professor of biblical languages and Scripture, Laurentianum, Milan and Venice · 9 Nov 2024 appointed Preacher of the Papal Household, succeeding Cardinal Cantalamessa after 44 years · 2026 named a member of the Dicastery for Communication.
His own channels
Vatican News carries his biography and his meditations in full — the sermons themselves are published, which makes this one of the few cards in the suit whose actual words are easy to read. Anyone wanting to know what the Roman Curia is being told, in its own hearing, can simply go and read it.

VII · Doctrine & Position

School
Biblical scholar — and, uniquely here, a computer scientist. Not a canonist, not a diplomat, not an administrator. A teacher of Hebrew and Greek who once wrote about machine intelligence.
THE MACHINE QUESTION unverified
The most interesting entry in this entire suit, and it is still empty. What is verified: he holds a 1996 degree in Information Science with a thesis on artificial intelligence, and he was made a member of the Dicastery for Communication in 2026.What is not: no statement by Pasolini on AI could be found on 26 July 2026. The man in the Roman Curia best equipped to understand what Leo XIV is arguing about has not, so far as this check can establish, said a word about it in public.
IN TECH NOW ★
The best-equipped and the most silent. A 1996 Information Science degree with a thesis on artificial intelligence · a seat on the Dicastery for Communication since 2026 · and not one public word about AI that this check could find. The Advent and Lent sermons are where that silence would end.
Why this matters more than his rank suggests ★
Rome's answer to the machine is currently made by a canon lawyer (A♠), a diplomat (K♠), a Dean (Q♠), a treaty-maker (10♠) and a biblical theologian (8♠) — not one of them technically trained. Pasolini is. And he is the one man who can speak to the pope directly, several times a year, without going through anybody. Watch the Advent and Lenten sermons.
Signature message partial
His early preaching was summarised in the Catholic press under the headings “Repent!” and “don't be closed to change.” Headline-level only; the full texts were not read for this file.
Published works partial
UNVERIFIED as a bibliography, though as a professor of Scripture he is likely to have one. His papal-household meditations are published and are the accessible body of his thought.
Method
Scripture first. A teacher of biblical languages preaching to a Curia of lawyers and diplomats — the counterweight built into the household by design.
What he has changed his mind about ★
He changed his life, which is more. A twenty-five-year-old with a computer science degree in 1996 — at the beginning of the internet boom — entered a Capuchin friary the following year. No statement explains it, and none is needed.

VIII · The Sword & the State

State standing
None. The Preacher of the Papal Household holds no civil office of any kind — the only card in this suit of which that is completely true.
The one public stage
Good Friday in St Peter's Basilica, before the pope and a global broadcast audience. It is the only moment this office is visible outside Rome, and it comes once a year.
Communication
Through the Dicastery for Communication he now has a seat in the body governing how the Holy See uses media — the closest thing in the Vatican to a technology portfolio, and the natural place for his first degree to matter.
Italy
Milanese, trained in Milan, taught in Milan and Venice. He is the most local man in this suit and speaks to the least local audience.

IX · Conflict & Controversy

Scandals
None found. No scandal, accusation or proceeding against him surfaced in this check. Recorded as a negative finding, not an absence of looking.
The Cantalamessa comparison partial
Following a man who held the post for forty-four years is the whole difficulty of this card. Every sermon is measured against a predecessor who preached to three popes and became a cardinal. No public criticism of Pasolini was found.
Rivals
None. There is exactly one papal preacher and nobody competes for it.
The risk in the office
Preaching to the powerful is dangerous only if you do it properly. The office's whole point is to say things the Curia would not otherwise hear — and its whole temptation is not to. Which way Pasolini goes is not yet on the record.

X · The Standing

Immunity & legal shield
Not applicable. He holds no office carrying any legal standing.

XI · The File

Why the Two
Because he commands nothing whatsoever. No jurisdiction, no budget, no staff, no vote, no state. By every measure this deck uses, he is the lightest card in the suit. He is also the only one who gets to speak to the pope without an appointment — and the deck ranks offices, not opportunities.

The one thing to know ★
In 1996 a twenty-four-year-old in Milan wrote a university thesis on artificial intelligence. The next year he became a Capuchin friar. Thirty years later he preaches to a pope who has staked his pontificate on what artificial intelligence must never be allowed to become.Roberto Pasolini is the lowest card in this suit and holds no power of any kind. He is also the only person in the Roman government who studied the machine before he studied the soul — and the only one who can walk into the room and say so. Whether he ever does is, on the evidence of 26 July 2026, still an open question.

XII · The Timeline

1996–1997 · computing to religious formation

XIII · The House Reading

Place in the landscape
Pasolini's documented influence is teaching, writing, and preaching. His appointment provides access to senior listeners; it does not establish executive control over them. House analysis written 2026-09-23; these applications are inferences, not the subject's statements about this house.
What could help this house
His training offers a useful comparison for the house's AI-assisted study: technical understanding and close reading of a text can be practised together. Assess a sermon by its argument and sources, not by whether its author uses a machine.
What could hurt this house
A technical qualification can lend borrowed authority to an unrelated theological claim. Equally, a religious office does not validate a technical claim about AI. Check each claim within the field to which it belongs.
Boundary and next evidence
An AI thesis is not evidence of a present position on machine consciousness or the house's theology. Read a dated sermon or explicit statement before assigning such a position to him.
