A field file on a person in a public role, from the public record. Private lines (family, health, home, security, personal wealth) are kept at home and not shown.
I · Identity
- Full legal name
- Jean-Claude Hollerich, S.J. — a Jesuit, and the only member of a religious order in this suit besides the pope himself.
- Name in office
- Archbishop of Luxembourg, and Relator General of the Synod on Synodality — the man who drafts and presents what the assembly has said.
- The distinction ★
- The first cardinal in the history of Luxembourg, created 5 October 2019 — from a country of under 700,000 people.
- Date of birth
- 9 August 1958 — age 67.
- Place of birth
- Differdange, Luxembourg, to Emile Hollerich and Marie-Anne Wester — the only card in this suit whose parents are both named on the record.
- Nationality
- Luxembourgish.
- Languages ★
- The most formidable linguist in this suit. Luxembourgish, French, German (licentiate in German literature), Italian, English — and Japanese, studied for four years and used professionally for two decades.
II · The Likeness & the Ground
- Places of operation
- One pin dominates this map, and it is not in Europe. Tokyo holds twenty-six years of his life — student, then professor, then Vice-Rector of a Japanese university. He is the only man in this suit who spent his working prime inside a culture where Christians are about one per cent of the population. Everything else — Luxembourg, Rome, Namur, Frankfurt, Munich, Bonn — sits inside a few hundred miles of his birthplace.
- Differdange, Luxembourg1958 — born
Born 9 August 1958 to Emile Hollerich and Marie-Anne Wester, in a steel town in the south of the Grand Duchy. - Rome1978–1981
Theology and philosophy at the Pontifical Gregorian University, before he was a Jesuit at all. - Namur, Belgium1981–1983 — novitiate
Entered the Society of Jesus on 27 September 1981 and made his novitiate here. - Tokyo1985–2011 — the Japan years
Sophia University: student of Japanese language, culture and theology 1985–1989, then professor of German, French and European studies 1994–2011, rising to Vice-Rector. Took his perpetual vows in Tokyo on 18 October 2002. Twenty-six years of his life are on this pin. - Frankfurt & Munich1990–1994
Theological licentiate at Sankt Georgen, Frankfurt (1990), then a licentiate in German language and literature at LMU Munich (1990–1994). - Bonnto 2001 · and March 2026
Doctoral studies at the Centre for European Integration Studies. And in March 2026 he returned to the University of Bonn to say the sentence that made this file — see point 39. - Luxembourg City2011– · archbishop
Appointed Archbishop of Luxembourg 12 July 2011, installed 16 October 2011. Created Cardinal 5 October 2019 — the first cardinal Luxembourg has ever had. - Vatican City2021– · the Synod
Relator General of the Synod from 8 July 2021.
- Differdange, Luxembourg1958 — born
III · The Office
- Archbishop of Luxembourg
- Appointed 12 July 2011, installed 16 October 2011. A small archdiocese, and his only diocesan charge.
- Relator General ★
- Appointed 8 July 2021 as relator general of the Synod — the officer who synthesises the assembly's discussion and presents it back. In practice, the man who writes down what the Church has decided it thinks.
- The synod title ★
- ⚠︎ The deck card needs correcting. It lists him as Relator General. By March 2026 Catholic press was describing him as the “former general relator” of the Synod on Synodality — the 2021–24 assembly having concluded. Whether he holds a continuing role in the implementation phase to 2028 was not confirmed in this check. Flagged for re-verification rather than silently resolved.
- Held since
- Cardinal from 5 October 2019, rank of Cardinal-Priest.
- COMECE
- President of the Commission of the Bishops' Conferences of the European Union, March 2018 to 2023 — five years as the Catholic Church's institutional voice to Brussels.
- How he got it
- Appointed by Benedict XVI to Luxembourg in 2011, and by Francis to the synod and the cardinalate. He has been promoted by both wings of the modern papacy.
- Who can remove him
- Leo XIV. As a diocesan archbishop he would ordinarily serve to 75; the synod role is entirely at the pope's discretion.
- Retirement
- As an archbishop he is expected to submit his resignation at 75 — on 9 August 2033.
IV · The Power
- Scope
- A small archdiocese, and — through the synod — the drafting pen of a worldwide process. The two are wildly out of proportion, and the second is what puts him in this suit.
- Hard power
- Ordinary jurisdiction over Luxembourg, and nothing else. He commands no dicastery.
- Soft power
- Very large and entirely disproportionate to his see. As relator he shaped how the synod's own conclusions were worded; as a public figure he can move an argument across the whole Church in a single speech — which is exactly what he did in March 2026.
- Europe
- Five years leading COMECE made him the Church's principal interlocutor with the European Union institutions — a constituency no other card in this suit holds.
- Chain of command
- As archbishop, answers to Leo XIV (A♠) directly. In the synod he worked alongside Cardinal Mario Grech (6♠), Secretary General — Grech runs the machinery, Hollerich holds the pen.
- The vote
- Cardinal-elector until 9 August 2038 — twelve more years.
- Budget unverified
- UNVERIFIED. No figure for the Archdiocese of Luxembourg was confirmed.
- Flock unverified
- UNVERIFIED. No current figure for Catholics in the Archdiocese of Luxembourg was confirmed in this check.
V · Formation
- Entered religion
- Joined the Society of Jesus on 27 September 1981, aged 23 — after three years already studying in Rome. Novitiate at Namur, Belgium, 1981–1983. Perpetual vows in Tokyo, 18 October 2002.
- Education
- Gregorian, Rome 1978–1981 · Sophia University, Tokyo 1985–1989 — Japanese language, culture and theology · Sankt Georgen, Frankfurt 1990 — theological licentiate · LMU Munich 1990–1994 — licentiate in German language and literature · Centre for European Integration Studies, Bonn — doctoral studies to 2001. Five universities in four countries.
- Ordination
- Ordained priest 21 April 1990 in Brussels, aged 31.
- The Japan years
- Sophia University, Tokyo, 1994–2011: professor of German, French and European studies, and Vice-Rector for General and Student Affairs. Seventeen years as an academic administrator in Japan — the formation nobody else in this suit has.
- What Japan gave him ★
- A working life inside a society where Catholicism is a tiny minority and the Church has no civil weight at all. Everyone else in this suit learned the Church as an institution with standing. He learned it as one without.
- The climb
- 1981 Jesuit novitiate · 1990 ordained, Brussels · 1994–2011 Sophia University, Tokyo · 2011 Archbishop of Luxembourg · 2018–2023 President of COMECE · 2019 created Cardinal · 2021 Relator General of the Synod.
VI · The Ties
- Known associates ★
- His partner in the synod: Cardinal Mario Grech (6♠), Secretary General — the two ran the process together, and both men publicly changed position through it.The patrons: Benedict XVI made him archbishop in 2011; Francis made him relator general and a cardinal. Both deceased. His order: the Society of Jesus, led by Fr Arturo Sosa (A♣) — and the order that produced Francis.Brussels: five years as President of COMECE, the bishops' voice to the EU — which is also A♣ in The Contenders' Opposition suit, the body now regulating AI.Against him: an open letter published in April 2026, and sustained criticism from traditionalist quarters — see point 49.The card he collides with: Sr Raffaella Petrini (7♠) — see point 41.

- His own channels
- He speaks constantly — symposia, interviews, synod addresses — which is why his change of mind is documented at all. Covered by Vatican News; profile at the College of Cardinals Report. Contrast Rudelli (9♠), who says nothing.
VII · Doctrine & Position
- School
- Jesuit, and an academic one — a linguist and university administrator rather than a canonist or diplomat. The only card in this suit formed by teaching secular students in a non-Christian country.
- THE MACHINE QUESTION unverified
- UNVERIFIED — nothing found. No statement by Cardinal Hollerich on artificial intelligence surfaced on 26 July 2026. Recorded as a gap worth watching, because of two things in his record: he led COMECE, the Catholic voice to the European institutions now writing the world's strictest AI law, and he held the drafting pen of the synod. He is unusually well placed to make the machine question a European and a synodal argument, and he has not done it.
- IN TECH NOW unverified
- UNVERIFIED — no AI statement found. The unused asset stands: five years as president of COMECE made him the Church's ambassador to the European institutions that now run the world's strictest AI law. He is spending his public voice on ordination instead.
- Women's ordination ★
- The most explosive position held by anyone in this suit. At a symposium at the University of Bonn in March 2026: “I cannot imagine in the long run how a Church can survive if half of the people of God suffers because they have no access to ordained ministry.” He said women in his parishes tell him so and that “90% among us have the same opinion”, that bishops are obliged to listen, and that “this is not just a desire of a few left-wing women's associations.”
- What he is arguing against ★
- Ordinatio Sacerdotalis, John Paul II's apostolic letter of 1994, which declared that “the Church has no authority whatsoever to confer priestly ordination on women” and that the judgement is “to be definitively held by all the Church's faithful.” A sitting cardinal is publicly contradicting a teaching a pope declared closed.
- Where the argument rests
- Not on theology but on survival. Note his actual claim: not that the tradition is wrong, but that the Church cannot continue to exist on the present terms. It is a demographic argument wearing doctrinal clothes, and it is the same move Leo makes on the machine in reverse — where Leo says a thing cannot be permitted because of what humans are, Hollerich says a thing cannot be withheld because of what the Church will otherwise become.
- What he has changed his mind about ★
- He says so himself. He previously described himself as more conservative on the question and states plainly that his views changed. Two men in this suit have documented reversals — Grech (6♠) and Hollerich — and both changed during the same synod.
- April 2026 partial
- Reported as saying big steps are being taken on the role of women in the Church, in connection with a report on women and ordained ministry. The full text was not read for this file; the headline claim is verified, its detail is not.
VIII · The Sword & the State
- State standing
- None personally. But through COMECE, 2018–2023, he was the Catholic Church's institutional voice to the European Union — a genuine seat at a genuine legislature.
- The European angle ★
- The EU is now the single most powerful regulator of artificial intelligence on earth — the Ace of the Opposition suit in The Contenders. Hollerich spent five years as the Church's ambassador to precisely that institution, and left the post before AI became its defining project.
- Japan
- Twenty-six years, including seventeen as a university administrator. A senior Catholic cardinal who has lived most of his adult life in Asia — rarer than it sounds.
- Luxembourg
- A country of fewer than 700,000 people, and one of the wealthiest per head on earth. It had never had a cardinal before him.
IX · Conflict & Controversy
- The pushback ★
- Sustained and public. An open letter to Cardinal Hollerich was published in April 2026, and traditionalist outlets have accused him of “the destabilization of doctrine.” He is the most openly contested figure in this suit — not for anything he has done, but for what he has said.
- The doctrinal exposure partial
- Arguing for women's ordination against a teaching declared definitive in 1994 puts a cardinal in genuinely unusual territory. No disciplinary action against him has been reported, and none is suggested here. The exposure is real and unresolved.
- Scandals
- None found. No scandal, accusation or proceeding against him surfaced in this check. The controversy is entirely about his views.
- Critics partial
- Traditionalist Catholic media, named commentators, and the signatories of the April 2026 open letter. Individual names were not verified for this file.
X · The Standing
- Immunity & legal shield unverified
- UNVERIFIED. No specific determination checked.
XI · The File
- Why the Five
- Because his jurisdiction is tiny — one small archdiocese — and his synod office is a drafting role that may already have ended. He governs almost nothing. He ranks here for reach of argument, not weight of office, and on that measure he is louder than several cards above him.
- Cross-references
- Dossier II · 6♠ Grech, his synod partner and the other documented convert · 7♠ Petrini — see below · A♣ Sosa, head of his order · A♠ Leo XIV · The Contenders A♣, the European Union he once represented the Church to.
- The one thing to know ★
- Read this card against the Seven of Spades and the suit tells you something neither file says alone. Raffaella Petrini is the highest-ranking woman in Vatican history, running the state, forbidden ordination. Hollerich says the Church cannot survive unless women can be ordained. They sit two ranks apart in the same suit, appointed by the same pope, and between them they frame the argument the Catholic Church is actually having — while a Jesuit who spent twenty-six years in Tokyo, in a church with no power at all, is the one willing to say it out loud.
XII · The Timeline
- 1981–1990 · Jesuit formation
- Joined the Jesuits in 1981, first went to Japan in 1985, and was ordained in 1990. Timeline checked 2026-09-23. Primary source. Other sections retain their original verification dates.
- 1994–2011 · Sophia University
- Taught languages and European studies in Tokyo; became a vice-rector in 2008.
- 2011–2019 · Luxembourg
- Appointed archbishop on 12 July 2011 and created cardinal on 5 October 2019.
- 2021–2023 · Synod and papal council
- Appointed general relator of the Synod assembly in July 2021 and a member of the Council of Cardinals in March 2023.
XIII · The House Reading
- Place in the landscape
- Hollerich links Luxembourg, the Jesuits, Japanese university life, and the Synod. His offices show why diocesan size alone does not measure a person's reach. House analysis written 2026-09-23; these applications are inferences, not the subject's statements about this house.
- What could help this house
- Practise explaining the house's claims to people outside its vocabulary. His cross-cultural teaching career is a useful comparison: a doctrine that can only be understood by insiders has not yet been explained plainly.
- What could hurt this house
- A prominent participant's proposal can be mistaken for an institution's settled decision. Label who is speaking, what office they hold, and whether the relevant decision-maker has adopted the proposal.
- Boundary and next evidence
- The biography establishes his career, not the truth of every later quotation attributed to him. Read the complete dated statement and the institution's response before describing a doctrinal change.
