The Cult Dossier · No. 135 · Apocalyptic / Doomsday
Eight Trigrams
Bagua Jiao
c.1800 – 1813 · North China Plain; Beijing
XIII. FILLING THE GAPS — ASIA, AFRICA AND LATIN AMERICA
Fully religious — White Lotus derivative
Who led it
LIN QING, who claimed to be the Maitreya's earthly agent, and LI WENCHENG, proclaimed the reincarnated Ming emperor.
What it worshipped and taught
Eternal Venerable Mother doctrine and the imminent kalpa, combined with invulnerability practice — members believed ritual and mantra would make them proof against blades and bullets. The rising was timed by astrology to a solar conjunction in 1813.
Who was in it
Lin Qing; Li Wencheng; the Jiaqing Emperor; the eunuchs inside the Forbidden City who opened the gates to the rebels.
How it ended, or where it stands
Annihilated within months.
The dead
Estimates of 20,000 to 70,000
Of note
Included for the invulnerability doctrine, which recurs in this dossier across four continents — the Boxers, Alice Lakwena's Holy Spirit Movement, Joseph Kony's LRA. THIS ENTRY PREVIOUSLY CLAIMED THAT THE BELIEF RITUAL STOPS BULLETS HAS PROBABLY KILLED MORE PEOPLE THAN ANY OTHER SINGLE DOCTRINE RECORDED HERE. THAT CLAIM IS ABOUT THE REST OF THIS FILE, SO IT WAS TESTED AGAINST IT, AND IT DOES NOT HOLD.
Set the entries that carry it side by side — this one at more than 20,000, the BOXERS (136) at more than 32,000 Chinese Christians, the LORD'S RESISTANCE ARMY (077) at 100,000 or more — and then try to rank that against WHITE LOTUS (134), at about 100,000, or against the mass-death entries elsewhere in this file. THE RANKING CANNOT BE DONE HONESTLY. The tolls are estimates with wide bounds, they count different things in different centuries, and several of the groups above appear in more than one column. WHAT SURVIVES IS THE OBSERVATION, NOT THE SUPERLATIVE: the belief that ritual stops bullets recurs across four continents and it kills the people who hold it.
THE DEEPER PROBLEM IS THAT THE CLAIM CONFLATED TWO DIFFERENT THINGS. The Eight Trigrams and Boxer dead are largely BELIEVERS WHO WALKED INTO GUNFIRE EXPECTING TO BE PROTECTED. The Lord's Resistance Army's hundred thousand are overwhelmingly ITS VICTIMS, who believed nothing. Counting them together measures “people killed by groups that happened to hold this doctrine”, not “people killed BY the doctrine”, and only the second was ever the interesting claim.
WHAT SURVIVES IS NARROWER AND STILL WORTH THE ENTRY: invulnerability practice recurs independently across four continents and several centuries, and wherever it appears it converts a religious conviction directly into a body count among its own adherents. That is a real pattern. It is not a league table.

Its timeline
- 15 SEPTEMBER 1813 With the help of sympathetic palace eunuchs, ABOUT 250 REBELS ATTACK THE IMPERIAL PALACE IN BEIJING AND SOME EIGHTY GET INSIDE THE GATES before they are closed — the only time in Qing history that rebels reached the palace. An arrow from the assault reportedly remained lodged in a palace signboard for over a century.
- 1813 The rising is crushed within months. LIN QING, who had declared himself the reincarnation of Maitreya, is executed; LI WENCHENG, proclaimed a true lord of the Ming, burns himself alive rather than surrender; the third leader, FENG KESHAN, is also executed.
- 1813–14 MORE THAN 20,000 members of the sect are killed in the suppression; one estimate puts the toll over the whole period of disorder at 70,000.
