### Its timeline
- 15 SEPTEMBER 1813 With the help of sympathetic palace eunuchs, ABOUT 250 REBELS ATTACK THE IMPERIAL PALACE IN BEIJING AND SOME EIGHTY GET INSIDE THE GATES before they are closed — the only time in Qing history that rebels reached the palace. An arrow from the assault reportedly remained lodged in a palace signboard for over a century.
- 1813 The rising is crushed within months. LIN QING, who had declared himself the reincarnation of Maitreya, is executed; LI WENCHENG, proclaimed a true lord of the Ming, burns himself alive rather than surrender; the third leader, FENG KESHAN, is also executed.
- 1813–14 MORE THAN 20,000 members of the sect are killed in the suppression; one estimate puts the toll over the whole period of disorder at 70,000.
