White Lotus

Bailianjiao

c.12th c. – 19th c. · China

XIII. FILLING THE GAPS — ASIA, AFRICA AND LATIN AMERICA

Fully religious — Buddhist-derived millenarian tradition

Who led it

Not one organisation but a recurring tradition. Key figures: MAO ZIYUAN (12th c.), the devotional founder; HAN SHANTONG and his son HAN LIN'ER, who led the Red Turban rising of 1351; and the leaders of the 1794–1804 rebellion.

What it worshipped and taught

The ETERNAL VENERABLE MOTHER (Wusheng Laomu), who weeps for her lost children on earth and will gather them home; and the coming of MAITREYA, the future Buddha, whose arrival ends the present corrupt age. Vegetarian, lay-led, and notable for the prominence of women in leadership — which alone made it suspect to the Confucian state. Because the doctrine promised an imminent reversal of the world order, every dynasty from the Yuan onward treated it as sedition, and the label 'White Lotus' was applied by officials to almost any unauthorised religious group.

Who was in it

Mao Ziyuan; Han Shantong; Han Lin'er; ZHU YUANZHANG, a Red Turban commander who went on to found the MING DYNASTY and then suppressed the movement that raised him; the Qing Jiaqing Emperor.

How it ended, or where it stands

Suppressed repeatedly across seven centuries; never eliminated.

The dead

ABOUT 100,000 REBELS KILLED in the rebellion of 1796–1804 by the usual modern estimate; the Qing campaign leadership claimed a far higher figure. THIS FILE PREVIOUSLY GAVE 100,000 TO OVER A MILLION, WHICH THE SOURCES DO NOT SUPPORT.

Of note

ROUGHLY SEVEN HUNDRED YEARS OF RECURRENCE, from the twelfth century into the nineteenth — which makes it AMONG THE MOST PERSISTENT MILLENARIAN TRADITIONS ON RECORD. This file previously called it simply the most persistent in world history; the span is the fact, the ranking is a judgement, and only the fact is asserted here. Note the pattern that recurs in this dossier at every scale: a rebel becomes the state and immediately outlaws the movement that carried him there.

Its timeline

  1. c.1133 Mao Ziyuan founds a devotional lay Buddhist society.
  2. 1351 THE RED TURBAN REBELLION begins under Han Shantong; it topples the Mongol Yuan dynasty.
  3. 1368 Zhu Yuanzhang, a former Red Turban, founds the Ming dynasty — and outlaws the tradition.
  4. 1796–1804 THE WHITE LOTUS REBELLION against the Qing — eight years of war across Hubei, Shaanxi, Sichuan, Guizhou and neighbouring country, ENDING THE BELIEF THAT MANCHU ARMS WERE UNBEATABLE and draining a treasury that never recovered. The Qing had to rely on Han recruits and local mercenaries to finish it.
  5. 19th c. Successor movements feed into the Eight Trigrams rising and eventually the Boxers.
