Keith Raniere
Vanguard
Founder, NXIVM and DOS · born 26 August 1960 · active 1998–2018
Marketed as one of the smartest men in the world with a near-mythic IQ. He built an executive coaching company on 'Rational Inquiry', teaching that all suffering is chosen — including, in the documented curriculum, by rape victims and Holocaust victims. Inside it he created DOS, a secret women-only pyramid presented as a female empowerment sorority, in which women surrendered blackmail collateral before being told what they were joining, were put on near-starvation diets to reach his preferred body type, and were branded near the pubic bone with his initials, without anaesthetic, while held down and filmed. Convicted on all counts in 2019.
Before the law. CONVICTED on all counts, 2019. Serving 120 years; HIS SCHEDULED RELEASE DATE IS 27 JUNE 2120. All appeals to date exhausted.
Where things stand. Incarcerated. HE SPENT ROUGHLY FIVE YEARS AT USP TUCSON — a facility housing sex offenders and inmates unsafe in general population — AND WAS MOVED IN DECEMBER 2025, via Oklahoma City, to FCI Atlanta on 17 December 2025 and subsequently to FCI BUTNER MEDIUM I in North Carolina. NOTE: the granular transfer tracking comes substantially from Frank Report, an outlet run by a longstanding NXIVM opponent; the fact of the December 2025 transfer out of Tucson is more broadly reported. A small group of loyalists still campaigns for him.
- 1998 Founds NXIVM.
- 2003–17 Aggressive litigation campaign against critics, funded largely by Clare Bronfman.
- 2015 Founds DOS.
- 17 October 2017 The New York Times publishes the branding story; collapse follows within days.
- March 2018 Arrested in Mexico and brought to the United States, appearing first in federal court in Fort Worth, Texas.
- 19 JUNE 2019 CONVICTED on all counts — racketeering, sex trafficking, forced labour conspiracy, wire fraud, and possession of child pornography involving a 15-year-old.
- 27 October 2020 SENTENCED TO 120 YEARS.
- 27 October 2025 Second Circuit rejects his appeals; affirmed again March 2026.

Nancy Salzman
Prefect
Co-founder and President, NXIVM · born 1954 · active 1998–2018
A psychiatric nurse and trained hypnotherapist who supplied the clinical credibility Raniere lacked and personally designed and delivered much of the curriculum. She was the one in the room with most students; Raniere stayed largely offstage. She pleaded guilty in 2019 to racketeering conspiracy, admitting to altering video evidence and accessing critics' email accounts. She has since publicly acknowledged the harm and expressed remorse, which distinguishes her from most of the other defendants.
Before the law. PLEADED GUILTY to racketeering conspiracy. Sentenced September 2021 to 42 months and a 150,000 dollar fine; served under 20 months. On supervised release until March 2027.

Lauren Salzman
—
DOS first-line master, NXIVM · born 1976 · active 1990s–2018
Nancy Salzman's daughter, raised inside the organisation from adolescence, and one of the first-line DOS masters directly under Raniere. Her testimony at trial — six days on the stand, describing collecting collateral, the branding ceremony, and holding a woman in a room for nearly two years — was the prosecution's most devastating evidence and effectively decided the case. She received probation rather than prison, the judge citing her cooperation and her own position as both perpetrator and victim.
Before the law. PLEADED GUILTY to racketeering conspiracy. Sentenced to probation in recognition of her cooperation.

Clare Bronfman
—
Operations director and financier, NXIVM · born 8 April 1979 · active 2002–2018
Heiress to the Seagram fortune, who, prosecutors said, spent millions of dollars of her inherited fortune on Raniere's ventures over more than a decade. Her real function was not the money but the litigation: she funded a sustained campaign of lawsuits and private investigations against former members, journalists and critics, which for fifteen years made it dangerous to speak publicly about the organisation. She pleaded guilty to harbouring an undocumented immigrant for financial gain and to fraudulent use of a dead person's identity, and received 81 months — far above the guideline range, the judge citing her role in silencing victims.
Before the law. PLEADED GUILTY to harbouring an undocumented immigrant for financial gain and fraudulent use of identification; 81 months.
Where things stand. RELEASED FROM BUREAU OF PRISONS CUSTODY ON 27 JUNE 2025 — CONFIRMED — after a nine-month sentence reduction and a period in community confinement at a halfway house in the Bronx from May 2024. She is serving THREE YEARS OF SUPERVISED RELEASE, under conditions that BAR HER FROM CONTACTING ANYONE INVOLVED IN NXIVM OR ITS PROGRAMMES, allow her probation officer to inspect her email and social media and to visit her home without notice, and require permission to travel outside her designated area.
- 2002 Joins NXIVM; her sister Sara follows.
- 2003 Her father Edgar Bronfman Sr. publicly calls NXIVM a cult; both daughters commit anyway.
- 2003–17 Funds the litigation and investigation campaign against critics.

Sarah Edmondson
—
NXIVM whistleblower · born 1977 · active 2005–2017
A Canadian actor who spent twelve years in NXIVM, ran its Vancouver centre and personally enrolled an estimated 2,000 people — a fact she has never minimised. In March 2017 she was recruited into DOS, surrendered collateral, and was branded near the pubic bone with Raniere's initials while being held down. She went to the New York Times, and the resulting 17 October 2017 story is what destroyed the organisation. She testified at trial, wrote Scarred, and now co-hosts the podcast A Little Bit Culty with her husband and fellow defector Anthony Ames.
Before the law. Never charged. A cooperating witness for the prosecution.

Mark Vicente
—
NXIVM whistleblower · born 1965 · active 2005–2017
A South African-born filmmaker, co-director of What the Bleep Do We Know!?, who spent twelve years inside NXIVM and sat on its executive board. He left in mid-2017 after learning about DOS and the branding, and became one of the most effective internal organisers of the exodus — persuading other high-ranking members to leave and taking evidence to prosecutors. His trial testimony on the organisation's structure helped establish the racketeering enterprise.
Before the law. Never charged. Cooperating witness.
Where things stand. Living — no death record found; still appearing publicly on the subject into 2026. A South African filmmaker, co-director of WHAT THE BLEEP DO WE KNOW!? (2004), who became one of NXIVM’s two most prominent defectors and has been writing a book about it. A CONNECTION THIS DOSSIER SHOULD STATE: HE IS MARRIED TO BONNIE PIESSE (L183). It was her decision to leave that precipitated his own.
- 2005 Joins NXIVM; rises to the executive board.
- June 2017 Learns of DOS; leaves and begins organising other departures.
- 2017 Works with Catherine Oxenberg and journalists to expose the group.

Bonnie Piesse
—
NXIVM whistleblower · born 1983 · active 2007–2017
An Australian actor — she played the young Aunt Beru in Star Wars: Attack of the Clones — who was married to Mark Vicente and was the FIRST of the inner circle to leave. She noticed the starvation diets, the sleep deprivation and the changes in the women around her, said so, and walked out alone in early 2017 while her own husband still believed. Her departure is what eventually moved him. In the chronology of the collapse she is the first domino, and she left with the least evidence and the most to lose.
Before the law. Never charged.
Where things stand. Living — no death record found; still speaking publicly about NXIVM into 2026. An Australian actor and musician who played BERU LARS in the Star Wars prequels and returned to the role in OBI-WAN KENOBI; she joined NXIVM during a lull in her music and film career. SHE IS MARRIED TO MARK VICENTE (L182), and she left first — the departure that set his in motion.
- 2007 Joins NXIVM through her husband.
- early 2017 Leaves alone, before the DOS branding became known, on the strength of what she observed.
- mid-2017 Vicente follows her out; the exodus begins.
- 2020 Featured in HBO's The Vow.

Catherine Oxenberg
—
Campaigner who forced the NXIVM prosecution · born 22 September 1961 · active 2016–2018
An actor and the daughter of Princess Elizabeth of Yugoslavia, who took her daughter India to a NXIVM introductory session in 2016 and then watched her disappear into DOS. When she could not extract her, she went to the press, the FBI, the New York State Attorney General and eventually to federal prosecutors in the Eastern District — pushing the case forward for over a year when nobody would take it. Her book Captive documents the campaign. She is the clearest case in this dossier of a parent whose refusal to give up produced a criminal prosecution.
Before the law. Never charged. A driving force behind the federal case.
Where things stand. Living — no death record found; still speaking publicly into 2026. A former DYNASTY actress, related to the British royal family, who was among the group of whistleblowers that took the NXIVM story to THE NEW YORK TIMES — the reporting that broke the organisation open. Her daughter INDIA OXENBERG has since published her own account.
- 2016 Takes her daughter India to a NXIVM introductory event.
- 2017 India enters DOS; Catherine cannot reach her.
- 2017–18 Campaigns relentlessly — press, FBI, NY Attorney General, federal prosecutors.
- March 2018 Raniere arrested in Mexico.
- 2018 India leaves the group.
- 2018 Publishes Captive: A Mother's Crusade to Save Her Daughter from a Terrifying Cult.

Judge Nicholas Garaufis
—
US District Judge, Eastern District of New York; presided over NXIVM · born 1948 · active 2018–present
Presided over the entire NXIVM prosecution, from Raniere's 2018 arraignment through the 2019 trial, the sentencings of all six defendants, and every subsequent motion. He sentenced Raniere to 120 years and gave Clare Bronfman 81 months — far above the guideline range — explicitly citing her funding of litigation designed to silence victims. He has rejected Raniere's repeated new-trial motions, including the claim that the FBI fabricated the child pornography evidence, and Raniere has repeatedly sought his recusal. The Second Circuit has upheld him each time.
Before the law. United States District Judge, Eastern District of New York; on senior status since 1 October 2014.
Where things stand. Living, and STILL HEARING CASES — but the precise position is SENIOR STATUS, which he assumed on 1 OCTOBER 2014, not full active service. This file previously said only 'still on the bench'. Senior status lets a federal judge continue to preside on a reduced caseload; court calendar entries and sentencings through 2025 confirm he remains active in the Eastern District of New York.
- 2000 Appointed to the federal bench by President Clinton.
- 2018 Raniere arraigned before him.
- 19 June 2019 Raniere convicted on all counts.
- 27 October 2020 Sentences Raniere to 120 years.
- 30 September 2020 Sentences Clare Bronfman to 81 months, above guidelines, citing her role in silencing victims.
- 2021–26 Denies successive new-trial motions; the Second Circuit affirms in 2025 and again in 2026.

Barry Meier
—
New York Times reporter who broke the NXIVM branding story · born c.1949 · active 2017
A veteran New York Times investigative reporter — previously known for exposing OxyContin's marketing — who published 'Inside a Secretive Group Where Women Are Branded' on 17 October 2017, based on Sarah Edmondson's account and corroborating documents. NXIVM had survived fifteen years of litigation, private investigators and intimidation of critics. It began collapsing within days of publication. Raniere fled to Mexico and was arrested five months later. It is the clearest single instance in this dossier of one article ending an organisation.
Before the law. Journalist.
Where things stand. Living — no death record found; he would be about 77, and nothing consulted reports on him since 2023. ONE THING TO KEEP IN THE PAST TENSE: he is a FORMER New York Times investigative reporter, not a serving one. He was part of the Times team awarded the 2017 PULITZER PRIZE FOR INTERNATIONAL REPORTING, and was THE FIRST JOURNALIST TO PUT A NATIONAL SPOTLIGHT ON OXYCONTIN and on the Sackler family behind Purdue Pharma. His books include PAIN KILLER, adapted for television in 2023, and SPOOKED (18 May 2021), on the private-intelligence industry.
- 2017 Approached with the DOS branding account; verifies it with documents and multiple sources.
- 17 OCTOBER 2017 Publishes in the New York Times.
- October–November 2017 Members leave en masse; NXIVM suspends operations.
- 26 March 2018 Raniere arrested in Puerto Vallarta.
