What it worshipped and taught
Set out in the DIVINE PRINCIPLE (1966). Doctrine: the Fall was a literal sexual act between Eve and the archangel Lucifer, corrupting the human bloodline; Jesus was meant to marry and produce sinless children but was crucified before he could, achieving only spiritual and not physical salvation; a Third Adam, the Lord of the Second Advent, born in Korea between 1917 and 1930, must complete the work. Moon identified himself. Central practice: the BLESSING — mass arranged weddings in which Moon matched strangers, often across nationalities, to purify the bloodline, followed by a three-day sexual ceremony and, historically, a period of separation. Also the pikareum (blood cleansing) allegations of the early years, and the indemnity conditions of fundraising and witnessing.
Its people
Sun Myung Moon
Moon Yong-myung; the True Father; Lord of the Second Advent
Founder, the Unification Church · 6 January 1920 – 3 September 2012 · active 1954–2012
Born in what is now North Korea, he said Jesus appeared to him on a hillside at Easter 1935, when he was 15, and asked him to complete an unfinished mission. He taught that the Fall was a literal sexual act between Eve and Lucifer, that Jesus died before he could marry and purify the bloodline, and that a Third Adam born in Korea would finish the work — himself. His signature practice was the Blessing, mass arranged weddings of strangers, scaling from 36 couples to a claimed 360,000. He built a global business empire, founded The Washington Times, was imprisoned in North Korea, in South Korea and in the United States, and died at 92 with his family fighting over the succession.
Before the law. CONVICTED of tax fraud and conspiracy in the United States, 1982. Imprisoned in North Korea (1948) and South Korea (1955, acquitted).

Hak Ja Han
the True Mother; Mother of Peace
Co-founder and leader, Unification Church / Family Federation · born 6 January 1943 · active 1960–present
Married Sun Myung Moon in 1960 at seventeen, in what the church calls the Marriage of the Lamb, and was designated with him as True Mother — the two together constituting the True Parents. After Moon's death in 2012 she consolidated control against her own sons, and has since elevated her own status considerably, teaching in some contexts that she is the only-begotten daughter and that Moon's mission was incomplete without her. Under her leadership the Japanese branch was stripped of its religious corporation status over decades of coerced donations.
Before the law. CONVICTED 31 AUGUST 2026 AND SENTENCED TO TWO YEARS by the Seoul Central District Court, for violating the political funds act, bribery and embezzling church money; the church is appealing and she has not gone to prison. ARRESTED 22 SEPTEMBER 2025 in South Korea. The Seoul Central District Court granted the warrant citing a risk she would destroy evidence. She is accused of conspiring to give 100 million won (about 72,400 US dollars) to People Power Party lawmaker Kweon Seong-dong in 2022 in exchange for political favours, and of gifting luxury handbags and a necklace to former first lady Kim Keon Hee using embezzled church money. SHE DENIED THE ALLEGATIONS AND WAS CONVICTED ON ALL THREE COUNTS. SEPARATELY INDICTED, WITHOUT DETENTION, ON 31 AUGUST 2026 over alleged embezzlement of about 10.5 billion won; that case is untried.
Where things stand. NOT CURRENTLY IN CUSTODY. Arrested September 2025 and indicted by a SPECIAL COUNSEL TEAM for violating the political fund law and the anti-graft law. Her bribery trial opened in DECEMBER 2025 and she stood trial in detention. AN APPEAL IS PENDING AND THIS STATUS WILL MOVE AGAIN. An earlier version of this file said she was in custody; that was corrected, and a later version said no verdict had been returned, which was true until 31 August 2026.
- 1960 Marries Moon aged 17.
- 1960–2012 Bears 14 children; designated True Mother.
- 2012 Takes control after Moon's death; her sons Hyun Jin and Hyung Jin break away.
- 2015 Hyung Jin founds the rival gun-blessing Rod of Iron Ministries in Pennsylvania.
- 8 July 2022 Shinzo Abe assassinated by a man whose mother was ruined by donations to the church.
- 25 MARCH 2025 Tokyo District Court orders the dissolution of the Japanese branch's religious corporation status.
- 22–23 SEPTEMBER 2025 ARRESTED in Seoul, aged 82, in a bribery investigation involving KIM KEON HEE, wife of jailed former President Yoon Suk Yeol, and a serving lawmaker.
- DECEMBER 2025 INDICTED BY A SPECIAL COUNSEL TEAM for violating the political fund law and the anti-graft law. She is accused of colluding with a former church official to pass 100 MILLION WON to a People Power Party lawmaker, and of gifting a luxury necklace and Chanel bags to Kim Keon Hee. Her bribery trial opens.
- MARCH 2026
- 31 AUGUST 2026 CONVICTED: TWO YEARS. Guilty of violating the political funds act, bribery and embezzling church funds. The special counsel had sought thirteen. Her detention remains suspended and the church announces an appeal.
- 31 AUGUST 2026 The same day, a separate joint police-prosecution probe indicts her without detention over about 10.5 billion won in allegedly siphoned church funds.

Unification Church defector; former daughter-in-law of Sun Myung Moon · born 1966 · active 1982–1995
Married at fifteen to Moon's eldest son Hyo Jin in a Blessing arranged by Moon, and moved to the United States. Over thirteen years she experienced what she described as sustained physical abuse, and witnessed her husband's cocaine use and the family's private conduct — while the church presented them publicly as the sinless True Family. She escaped with her five children in 1995 and published In the Shadow of the Moons in 1998, the first credible inside account of the Moon household. The church attacked her account; her former husband later corroborated parts of it.
Before the law. Never charged. Won custody of her children.
Where things stand. Living — born 1966; no death record found, and she was still being cited and interviewed about her account as recently as 2026. IN THE SHADOW OF THE MOONS: MY LIFE IN THE REVEREND SUN MYUNG MOON’S FAMILY was published in 1998 by Little, Brown, WRITTEN WITH EILEEN McNAMARA. It is the only sustained first-person account of life inside the Moon family, and its charges against her former husband HYO JIN MOON — Sun Myung Moon’s eldest son — are of physical abuse, adultery, cocaine addiction, alcoholism and neglect of their children.
- 1982 Married at 15 to Hyo Jin Moon in a Blessing arranged by Sun Myung Moon.
- 1982–95 Lives within the Moon household in New York.
- August 1995 Escapes with her five children.

Unification Church defector; author of the BITE model · born 1954 · active 1974–1976
Recruited into the Unification Church as a 19-year-old Queens College student and rose to a mid-level leadership position within two years, fundraising and recruiting. He left in 1976 after a car accident and a family intervention, and went on to become the field's most influential theorist of exit — developing the BITE MODEL (control of Behaviour, Information, Thought and Emotion) and the Strategic Interaction Approach, a non-coercive alternative to the forcible deprogramming common in the 1970s. His frameworks are used in Appendix B of this dossier.
Before the law. Never charged.
Where things stand. LIVING AND ACTIVE — confirmed August 2026. The BITE model has since been extended into a TRAFFICKING BITE MODEL and a TERRORISM BITE MODEL. THE DISPUTE OVER HIS WORK IS LIVE, AND THIS DOSSIER IS ON BOTH SIDES OF IT. His framework describes environments, not a proven mechanism of involuntary mental capture, and the BITE model has been attacked in print as pseudoscience — including in a paper published by CESNUR IN MARCH 2026 and in the magazine BITTER WINTER. READERS SHOULD KNOW WHO IS ARGUING: those critiques come from CESNUR and Bitter Winter, both associated with MASSIMO INTROVIGNE, WHO HAS HIS OWN FILE IN THIS DOSSIER AT L258 AND IS HIMSELF FLAGGED THERE AS CONTESTED. Neither party to this argument is disinterested, and this file cites both.
- 1974 Recruited at 19; drops out of college within weeks.
- 1974–76 Rises to a mid-level leadership role.
- 1976 Leaves after a car accident and a family intervention.
- 1988 Publishes Combatting Cult Mind Control.
- 1990s–present Develops the BITE model and the Strategic Interaction Approach; testifies as an expert witness.

Sociologist of religion; founder of INFORM · born 21 April 1938 · active 1970s–present
Professor at the London School of Economics whose 1984 study The Making of a Moonie is the most important empirical challenge to the brainwashing model. She followed Unification Church recruits over years and found that of those who attended a residential workshop — the supposed point of capture — around 90 per cent never joined at all, and most who did left within two years of their own accord. In 1988 she founded INFORM, a UK charity providing evidence-based information on minority religions to families and government. She is the principal scholarly counterweight to Singer and Hassan, and Appendix B carries her position.
Before the law. Academic; frequent expert witness — often on the opposite side from Singer and Hassan.
Where things stand. LIVING, AGED 88 — CONFIRMED AUGUST 2026. PROFESSOR EMERITUS OF SOCIOLOGY WITH SPECIAL REFERENCE TO THE STUDY OF RELIGION AT THE LSE, where she has been attached to the sociology department since 1970, and FOUNDER AND HONORARY DIRECTOR OF INFORM — the independent educational charity she established in 1988 WITH HOME OFFICE BACKING AND THE SUPPORT OF THE MAINSTREAM CHURCHES to supply objective information on new religious movements. Elected an LSE Honorary Fellow in 2011; OBE, FBA. Her inclusion here is deliberate: a dossier of this kind is untrustworthy if it only cites the people who agree with its framing.
- 1976–84 Conducts longitudinal fieldwork on Unification Church recruitment.
- 1984 Publishes The Making of a Moonie: Choice or Brainwashing?
- 1988 Founds INFORM with UK Home Office support.
- 1990s–present Advises governments; INFORM's funding has been cut and restored more than once amid political argument.
