### Its timeline
- 1946 Moon imprisoned in North Korea; jailed again in 1948 at the Hungnam labour camp; freed 1950 by advancing UN forces.
- 1 May 1954 Church formally founded in Seoul.
- 1955 Moon arrested in South Korea on charges relating to ritual sex; acquitted.
- 1966 Divine Principle published.
- 1971 Moon relocates to the United States; mass campaigns follow.
- 1975 1,800-couple Blessing in Seoul; 1982 sees 2,075 couples at Madison Square Garden; 1992, the 30,000 Couple Blessing at the First World Culture and Sports Festival. THE 1995 FIGURE NEEDS SPLITTING: on 25 AUGUST 1995 the church reported an International Holy Wedding of 360,000 COUPLES, but only 36,000 WERE PHYSICALLY PRESENT at the Seoul Olympic Stadium; the rest were counted across MORE THAN 500 SATELLITE LOCATIONS IN 160 NATIONS. ALL OF THESE FIGURES ORIGINATE WITH THE CHURCH'S OWN RECORDS and have not been independently audited.
- 1976–1979 US Congressional KOREAGATE investigation (the Fraser Report) examines the church's links to the Korean CIA.
- 1982 Moon convicted of tax fraud and conspiracy in the United States; serves 13 months at Danbury from 1984.
- 1982 Founds The Washington Times.
- 1990s–2000s A BUSINESS EMPIRE SPANNING FOOD, MANUFACTURING, ARMS, MEDIA AND REAL ESTATE. In South Korea the TONGIL GROUP conglomerate includes ILWHA (ginseng and beverages) and TONGIL HEAVY INDUSTRIES (machine parts and weapons components). In the United States: KAHR ARMS, founded by Moon's son Justin; THE WASHINGTON TIMES; hotels, universities, and large landholdings in Uruguay and Brazil.
- 1990s–2020s THE MOST CONCRETE MEASURE OF ITS COMMERCIAL REACH IS FISH. TRUE WORLD FOODS, the church's seafood distribution arm, supplies sushi-grade product to ROUGHLY 9,000 SUSHI RESTAURANTS ACROSS NORTH AMERICA — an estimated 70 TO 80 PER CENT OF THE ENTIRE MARKET. A movement most people know only for mass weddings quietly controls most of the continent's sushi supply chain.
- 3 September 2012 Moon dies at 92; succession fought over by his sons; Hak Ja Han retains control of the main body.
- 8 July 2022 SHINZO ABE ASSASSINATED in Nara, Japan. The gunman, Tetsuya Yamagami, states that his mother's ruinous donations to the church — reportedly around 100 million yen — destroyed his family and that he blamed Abe for the church's political protection. The killing triggers a national reckoning.
- 13 October 2023 The Japanese government files a court request to dissolve the church's legal religious status over decades of coerced donations.
- 25 March 2025 Tokyo District Court orders the dissolution of the Japanese branch's religious corporation status.
- 22–23 SEPTEMBER 2025 HAK JA HAN ARRESTED in Seoul over alleged bribery of former first lady Kim Keon Hee and a People Power Party lawmaker. She denies it.
- DECEMBER 2025 – MARCH 2026 Indicted by special counsel; bribery trial opens December 2025; in March 2026 the Seoul Central District Court suspends her detention for a third time on health grounds and she is released to hospital.
- 31 AUGUST 2026 CONVICTED AND SENTENCED TO TWO YEARS. The Seoul Central District Court finds Hak Ja Han guilty of violating the political funds act, of bribery, and of embezzling church money. The special counsel had asked for THIRTEEN YEARS. SHE DOES NOT GO TO PRISON: her detention stays suspended on health grounds and the church says it will appeal. THE CASE REACHED THE MONEY, NOT THE DOCTRINE — the same pattern this dossier records everywhere since 1990 (see 150).
- 31 AUGUST 2026 (separately) INDICTED AGAIN, IN A DIFFERENT CASE. The same day, a joint police-prosecution team closes an eight-month investigation into religion and politics with 32 indictments — 16 from the Unification Church and 16 from Shincheonji (087). HAK JA HAN is indicted without detention, accused of siphoning off about 10.5 BILLION WON of church funds from around January 2017 and hiding money through false accounting.
- 2026 THE PEOPLE ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE TRANSACTION WERE CONVICTED TOO. Former first lady KIM KEON HEE received four years on appeal over a Graff diamond necklace and two Chanel bags from the church, and the lawmaker KWEON SEONG-DONG a two-year sentence at the Supreme Court in July over 100 million won.

ARRESTED 22 SEPTEMBER 2025 in South Korea. The Seoul Central District Court granted the warrant citing a risk she would destroy evidence. She is accused of conspiring to give 100 million won (about 72,400 US dollars) to People Power Party lawmaker Kweon Seong-dong in 2022 in exchange for political favours, and of gifting luxury handbags and a necklace to former first lady Kim Keon Hee using embezzled church money. Her bribery trial opened in DECEMBER 2025 and she stood trial in detention. AN APPEAL IS PENDING AND THIS STATUS WILL MOVE AGAIN. Unification Church defector; author of the BITE model · born 1954 · active 1974–1976
Before the law. Never charged.
Where things stand. LIVING AND ACTIVE — confirmed August 2026. The BITE model has since been extended into a TRAFFICKING BITE MODEL and a TERRORISM BITE MODEL. THE DISPUTE OVER HIS WORK IS LIVE, AND THIS DOSSIER IS ON BOTH SIDES OF IT. His framework describes environments, not a proven mechanism of involuntary mental capture, and the BITE model has been attacked in print as pseudoscience — including in a paper published by CESNUR IN MARCH 2026 and in the magazine BITTER WINTER. READERS SHOULD KNOW WHO IS ARGUING: those critiques come from CESNUR and Bitter Winter, both associated with MASSIMO INTROVIGNE, WHO HAS HIS OWN FILE IN THIS DOSSIER AT L258 AND IS HIMSELF FLAGGED THERE AS CONTESTED. Neither party to this argument is disinterested, and this file cites both.
- 1974 Recruited at 19; drops out of college within weeks.
- 1974–76 Rises to a mid-level leadership role.

Sociologist of religion; founder of INFORM · born 21 April 1938 · active 1970s–present
Before the law. Academic; frequent expert witness — often on the opposite side from Singer and Hassan.
Where things stand. LIVING, AGED 88 — CONFIRMED AUGUST 2026. PROFESSOR EMERITUS OF SOCIOLOGY WITH SPECIAL REFERENCE TO THE STUDY OF RELIGION AT THE LSE, where she has been attached to the sociology department since 1970, and FOUNDER AND HONORARY DIRECTOR OF INFORM — the independent educational charity she established in 1988 WITH HOME OFFICE BACKING AND THE SUPPORT OF THE MAINSTREAM CHURCHES to supply objective information on new religious movements. Elected an LSE Honorary Fellow in 2011; OBE, FBA. Her inclusion here is deliberate: a dossier of this kind is untrustworthy if it only cites the people who agree with its framing.
- 1976–84 Conducts longitudinal fieldwork on Unification Church recruitment.
- 1984 Publishes The Making of a Moonie: Choice or Brainwashing?
- 1988 Founds INFORM with UK Home Office support.
