Vaishnavism
The tradition of Vishnu
c.2nd c. BCE – present · Dharmic / Indian · Living · India, Nepal, global diaspora
V. THE MEDIEVAL WORLD — c.500 – 1500 CE
How many
Roughly 640–700 million — the largest branch of Hinduism, around 60% of Hindus.
Who began it
No founder. Major systematisers: Ramanuja (1017–1137), Madhva (1238–1317), Chaitanya (1486–1534), Vallabha.
What it is for
Loving devotion to a personal God who is loving in return. Vaishnavism is where Hinduism is most clearly theistic.
What it worships
Vishnu and above all his avatars — Krishna and Rama. Ten principal avatars (dashavatara): fish, tortoise, boar, man-lion, dwarf, Parashurama, Rama, Krishna, the Buddha in most lists, and Kalki, still to come. Lakshmi as Vishnu's consort; Radha as Krishna's beloved, whose longing is the model for the devotee's.
What it holds
Bhakti — devotion — as the primary and sufficient path, available to all castes and to women, which made it socially explosive. God is personal, has qualities, and can be loved. Against Shankara's Advaita, Ramanuja argued vishishtadvaita, qualified non-dualism: souls are real and distinct but wholly dependent on God, as a body on its soul. Madhva went further with dvaita, outright dualism — God and souls are eternally separate. Prapatti, total surrender, is emphasised, and the Tenkalai school compares it to a kitten carried by its mother, needing to do nothing, against the Vadakalai monkey clinging to its mother and needing to hold on. Vegetarianism is strongly normative.
What it does
Temple worship and darshan. Kirtan and bhajan, congregational singing. Japa on tulsi beads. Sectarian markings on the forehead (urdhva pundra, vertical). Pilgrimage to Vrindavan, Mathura, Puri, Tirupati, Ayodhya, Srirangam. Festivals: Janmashtami, Rama Navami, the Jagannath Rath Yatra at Puri, whose great cart gave English the word juggernaut.
After death
Rebirth until liberation. Crucially, Vaishnava liberation is not absorption into an impersonal absolute: it is eternal, individual, loving communion with Vishnu in his heaven, Vaikuntha, or Krishna's Goloka. The soul retains its identity forever. This is much closer to the Abrahamic picture of heaven than most Hindu eschatology, and it is why Vaishnavism translates most easily into Western religious vocabulary.
Its texts
Bhagavad Gita; Bhagavata Purana, the central devotional text; Vishnu Purana; Ramayana; the Tamil Divya Prabandham of the Alvar poet-saints, including Andal, the one female Alvar.
Its branches
Sri Vaishnavism (Ramanuja), Madhva's Brahma Sampradaya, Gaudiya (Chaitanya), Pushtimarg (Vallabha), Ramanandi, Swaminarayan, ISKCON.
Of note
If you want to understand why Hinduism cannot be summarised as pantheism, read Madhva. He argues for a personal God, real eternal individual souls, an eternal hell for some, and predestination — inside Hinduism.
Its timeline
- c.2nd c. BCE The Heliodorus pillar at Besnagar, erected by a Greek ambassador who calls himself a devotee of Vasudeva — the earliest datable Vaishnava evidence, and it was put up by a foreigner.
- c.6th–9th c. CE The Alvars compose Tamil devotional poetry; bhakti begins its northward spread.
- 1017–1137 CE Ramanuja; qualified non-dualism; he reportedly proclaims a secret mantra from a temple tower to everyone, accepting damnation for himself if it saves the crowd.
- 1238–1317 CE Madhva's dualism.
- 1486–1534 CE Chaitanya in Bengal; ecstatic public kirtan; the Gaudiya Vaishnava tradition.
- 1532–1623 CE Tulsidas writes the Ramcharitmanas in Hindi, putting Rama's story into the language ordinary people spoke.
- 1966 CE A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada founds ISKCON in New York at the age of 69, carrying Gaudiya Vaishnavism worldwide.
- 1992, 2019, 2024 CE The Babri Masjid demolished at Ayodhya; the Supreme Court awards the site for a Rama temple; the temple is consecrated.
