Unification Church

Family Federation for World Peace and Unification; Moonies

1954 CE – present · Abrahamic · Living · South Korea, Japan, US

VIII. POSTWAR & CONTEMPORARY — 1945 – PRESENT

How many

The church has claimed millions; independent estimates suggest 100,000–300,000 active, with Japan historically the largest financial base.

Who began it

Sun Myung Moon (1920–2012), a North Korean-born Christian who reported that Jesus appeared to him on a Korean hillside on Easter morning 1935, when he was fifteen, and asked him to complete an unfinished mission.

What it is for

To complete the work of Jesus by establishing sinless God-centred families, and thereby to restore the world to God.

What it worships

God, understood as having both masculine and feminine aspects, and as suffering — a God in anguish over the loss of his children, whose heart must be comforted. Moon and his wife Hak Ja Han are held by members to be the True Parents, the messiah in the sense of the first sinless couple.

What it holds

The fall of man was a literal sexual act between Eve and the archangel Lucifer, transmitting a corrupted lineage to all humanity. Jesus was meant to marry and establish a perfect family, and was crucified before he could, so his mission was spiritually but not physically complete. That work is completed by the True Parents. Restoration proceeds through indemnity, conditions paid to reverse the fall, and through providential history divided into numerically patterned periods.

What it does

Blessing ceremonies — mass weddings of thousands of couples at once, often matched by Moon personally, frequently across nationalities to overcome historic enmities. This is the practice for which the church is universally known. Pledge services; Hoon Dok Hae scripture reading; fundraising and witnessing, historically very intensive. Extensive business holdings: the Washington Times, Tongil Group, seafood distribution in the US, and hotels.

After death

A spirit world with levels, through which the spirit continues to grow. Crucially, spirits can and must complete their growth through living people — the doctrine of returning resurrection — so ancestors are liberated by rites performed by the living. The Blessing can be given to ancestors retroactively. There is no permanent hell; hell is a stage that will eventually be emptied as the spirit world is progressively restored.

Its texts

Divine Principle (1966), the systematic theology. Cheon Seong Gyeong, a compilation of Moon's words.

Its branches

FFWPU under Hak Ja Han; Sanctuary Church under Hyung Jin Moon; Family Peace Association under Hyun Jin Moon.

Of note

The 2022 assassination made the Unification Church the most politically consequential new religious movement in the world, forty years after Western coverage had largely moved on from it.

Its timeline

 1. 1935 CE Moon's reported Easter vision.
 2. 1946–50 CE Imprisoned in North Korea, including in the Hungnam labour camp; freed by advancing UN forces in 1950.
 3. 1954 CE The Holy Spirit Association for the Unification of World Christianity founded in Seoul.
 4. 1966 CE Divine Principle published.
 5. 1971 CE Moon relocates to the United States.
 6. 1970s CE Rapid US growth; the church becomes the central case study of the anti-cult movement, and the target of deprogramming — the forcible abduction and coercive re-education of adult members, which was itself prosecuted as kidnapping and which collapsed as a practice in the 1990s.
 7. 1982 CE 2,075 couples married at Madison Square Garden. Moon is convicted of tax fraud and serves 13 months, in a prosecution that drew support for him from mainstream religious bodies concerned about precedent.
 8. 1982 CE The Washington Times founded; the church becomes a significant funder of American conservative politics.
 9. 1990s CE Blessing ceremonies of hundreds of thousands, linked by satellite.
 10. 2012 CE Moon dies; leadership passes to Hak Ja Han, and the family splits into rival factions including one led by a son that is heavily armed and rifle-themed.
 11. 2022 CE Shinzo Abe is assassinated in Japan by a man who said his mother's ruinous donations to the church had destroyed his family. The killing triggers a national reckoning over the church's fundraising, the resignation of ministers with church ties, and a government move in 2023 to strip its legal religious status in Japan.
