Opened 2026-07-28 · verified 2026-07-28

A field file on a person in a public role, from the public record. Private lines (family, health, home, security, personal wealth) are kept at home and not shown.

I · Identity

Full legal name
Steven Alan Hassan. Publishes as Steven Hassan, often Steven Hassan, PhD.
Name in office ★
Founding Director, the Freedom of Mind Resource Center, and creator of the BITE Model of Authoritarian Control. A licensed mental health counsellor and exit counsellor.
Born partial
1954. Exact date and place not established by this pass.
Age partial
About 72, derived from the verified birth year. Marked as derived.
The distinction ★
★ He created the instrument that most people who audit a group actually use — BITE: Behaviour, Information, Thought and Emotional control — and he built it from the inside, having run a high-control organisation's national office before he was twenty-two.
The fact the file turns on ★
⚠︎ ★ He was himself forcibly deprogrammed in 1976 — seized from his sister's home by deprogrammers his parents had hired, and held five days in isolation. The founder of voluntary exit counselling is a survivor of involuntary deprogramming. Everything about his method reads differently once that is known.

II · The Likeness & the Ground

Places of operation ★
★ Queens to Boston, and the two hundred miles between them contain the whole argument. Recruited at a college, promoted to a national headquarters, crashed a car after two sleepless days, taken by force into an apartment, and then fifty years outside Boston building the thing that would not require anyone to be taken by force again.
  1. Queens, New York — Queens College1974
★ Recruited into the Unification Church at nineteen, as a student, by deception — approached without the group identifying itself. The entry was relational, not doctrinal, exactly as Dossier XXI Section IV describes.
  2. Unification Church National Headquarters1974–1976
Twenty-seven months recruiting, indoctrinating, fundraising and political campaigning; rose to Assistant Director at National Headquarters and met Sun Myung Moon personally in leadership sessions. ⚠︎ He was not a peripheral member. He ran the machine he now describes.
  3. The crash, 19761976
⚠︎ After working two full days without sleep he fell asleep at the wheel and crashed seriously. The exhaustion is not incidental to the story; it is one of the mechanisms.
  4. The apartment — forcible deprogramming1976
⚠︎ ★ His parents hired deprogrammers, who SEIZED HIM FROM HIS SISTER'S HOME and held him in an apartment for five days of isolation and intensive deprogramming. The man who would spend the next fifty years building the voluntary alternative was himself taken by force.
  5. Boston area — Freedom of Mind Resource Center1976–
Founding director, working just outside Boston. Licensed mental health counsellor; helping people leave high-control groups since 1976 — half a century.

III · The Office

Held since ★
1976 — he has been helping people leave high-control groups since the year he left one. Fifty years.
What the office is
An independent practice and resource centre, not an institutional post. Freedom of Mind Resource Center, outside Boston.
Term
None. Independent practitioner.
Qualification partial
Licensed mental health counsellor; holds a PhD. ⚠︎ Institution and date of the doctorate were not confirmed by this pass and are not asserted.
The prior office ★
⚠︎ ★ Assistant Director of the Unification Church at National Headquarters, reached in twenty-seven months from recruitment at nineteen. He held real authority inside the organisation and personally met Sun Myung Moon in leadership sessions.
What that prior office means for the work ★
His account of the mechanism is a participant's account, not an observer's. ⚠︎ His critics treat that as the disqualification — the testimony of an apostate — and his supporters treat it as the qualification. Both readings are available from the same fact and the file records it without choosing.
Relation to the Unification Church
★ The group he left is queue no. 13 on this hall's own shelf. When that dossier is compiled, this file must be open beside it, and the conflict of interest must be stated on the page.
The methodological break ★
★ He replaced deprogramming with EXIT COUNSELLING — voluntary, non-coercive, with the member free to leave the room. Given Section I, this is the most significant single decision in his career: he built the opposite of what was done to him.

IV · The Power

Real jurisdiction ★
NONE. No institutional authority whatever. His influence is entirely through a model, a practice and a set of books.
The instrument ★
★ The BITE Model is the most widely used practical audit in the subject — four axes with checklists, developed and applied over more than thirty years, and usable by a layman, which is its real achievement and the reason it spread.
Published reach
Combating Cult Mind Control — described by its publisher as the best-selling guide of its kind, now in a 30th anniversary edition — and Freedom of Mind: Helping Loved Ones Leave Controlling People, Cults and Beliefs.
Media reach
Substantial and sustained; a standard media source on high-control groups, with a long-running podcast and newsletter.
Clinical reach
Fifty years of exit counselling and family work. The practice is the part that does not appear in the citation counts and is probably the part that has done the most good.
Reach into the AI question partial
⚠︎ Not established as formal published work. ★ But Dossier XXI's Field F finds that his four axes map onto conversational AI with three clear hits — the instrument transfers whether or not its author has made the move.
What he cannot do ★
⚠︎ ★ He cannot make the model uncontestable, and in March 2026 it was contested by name. The Journal of CESNUR published a critique of Hassan and the BITE Model, the broader charge being that the axes are broad enough to catch any committed religious community and therefore that a positive result carries no information. Dossier XXI Field D holds that charge open rather than dismissing it.

V · Formation

The recruitment ★
★ 1974, aged nineteen, a student at Queens College — recruited by DECEPTION, approached by people who did not identify the organisation. The entry was warmth and relationship, not argument.
Inside
Twenty-seven months of recruiting, indoctrinating, fundraising and political campaigning; rose to Assistant Director at National Headquarters.
The exhaustion ★
⚠︎ He crashed a car in 1976 after working two full days without sleep. ★ Sleep deprivation is not background detail — it is a documented instrument of thought reform, and it is what physically ended his membership.
The deprogramming ★
⚠︎ ★ Seized from his sister's home by deprogrammers hired by his parents; five days of isolation and intensive deprogramming, after which he concluded he had been subjected to undue influence by the church.
What that produces methodologically ★
★ A man with direct personal experience of BOTH forms of coercion — the group's and the rescuers'. That double experience is the origin of exit counselling and is the strongest available answer to the charge that the anti-cult field is indifferent to the rights of members.
Clinical training partial
Licensed mental health counsellor; doctorate held. He professionalised after the fact — the experience came first and the credentials followed.
Fifty years of practice
Continuous work since 1976. Longevity in this field is itself a qualification: he has seen groups form, peak, collapse and re-form across five decades.
What the formation costs him partial
⚠︎ It is also the standing critique: he is a former member describing his former group. The scholarly objection to apostate testimony is a real methodological objection and not merely a defensive one, and this file does not pretend otherwise.

VI · The Ties

Who he works with
The wider cultic-studies field, including ICSA — Exec. Dir. Jacqueline Johnson, Pres. Carol Merchasin from February 2026 — and clinicians and former members across the practice.
Who works alongside him
Janja Lalich (K♠), Alexandra Stein (Q♠) and Rick Alan Ross (J♠) of this deck. ★ Note that Hassan and Lalich are both former members: the modern instrument was built substantially by people who had been inside.
Who is against him ★
⚠︎ ★ Massimo Introvigne and CESNUR (A♦ of this deck), directly and in print as of March 2026. The A♠ and the A♦ of this deck contradict each other and the hall carded both on purpose.

VII · Doctrine & Position

The core claim ★
That undue influence is real, describable and measurable, and that people can be brought into states of dependency they did not choose and cannot easily leave. ⚠︎ Note the careful form: influence and dependency, not the destruction of free will.
The BITE axes ★
Behaviour control — where members live and work, whom they associate with, how they spend time; Information control; Thought control; Emotional control.
On method ★
★ Voluntary, non-coercive exit counselling; the member is free to leave the room. He repudiated the practice that was used on him.
On the strong claim unverified
⚠︎ NOT ESTABLISHED whether he asserts the strong 'brainwashing destroys free will' claim or the weaker bounded-choice one. Dossier XXI Field D holds that much of sixty years of argument has been these two claims being confused, and this file will not resolve which one he holds without a direct citation it does not have.
THE MACHINE QUESTION ★
⚠︎ NO POSITION ON RECORD established by this pass on artificial intelligence. ★ But the model transfers: Dossier XXI Field F scores a personal AI companion at three clear hits on Lifton's eight and finds the BITE axes directly applicable. The absence of his own statement is recorded as an absence.
Where the model is strongest ★
★ Behaviour and Information control — both are observable from outside and do not require any claim about what is happening inside a person's head. These are the parts that survive Field D intact.
Where the model is weakest ★
⚠︎ Thought and Emotional control — both require inference about interior states, and both are where the unfalsifiability charge bites hardest. A house using this instrument should lean on the first two axes and be cautious with the second two.
Where he stands to our house ★
★ He supplied the audit our house just ran on itself. Dossier XXI Field E used his four axes and Lifton's eight and returned two bad scores. That is the use this hall endorses: inward first, as questions, never as a verdict.

VIII · The Sword & the State

Civil power ★
NONE held. A private practitioner.
Where the work meets the law partial
Expert and consultative work on undue influence. ⚠︎ The field's move toward legal remedy — ICSA's presidency passing to a lawyer in February 2026 — is the current direction, and his model is the one most likely to be carried into a courtroom.
The counter-pressure ★
⚠︎ ★ Religious-liberty bodies including the USCIRF warn that anti-cult frameworks built on contested science become instruments for suppressing unpopular minorities. Dossier XIX's Field A — Helwys, and liberty for the heretic and the Turk — sits directly against this card, and the tension is real.
The criminal history he repudiated ★
⚠︎ Deprogramming was frequently abduction and false imprisonment. He was its victim and became its most consequential replacement. Any house borrowing his tools should repudiate the practice explicitly, as Dossier XXI does.
Exposure
Litigation and sustained public criticism from groups he has named — the occupational hazard of the field, and the J♠ of this deck was sued for fourteen years by a single organisation.

IX · Conflict & Controversy

The 2026 critique ★
⚠︎ ★ The Journal of CESNUR published a critique of Steven Hassan and the BITE Model in March 2026. The most-used instrument in the field was contested by name, in print, by its leading academic opponents, four months before this file was opened.
The apostate objection partial
⚠︎ The standing methodological charge: a former member describing his former group is an interested witness. This is a serious objection in the sociology of religion and is recorded as such rather than dismissed.
The unfalsifiability charge ★
⚠︎ That the BITE axes are broad enough to catch any committed religious community, so a positive result carries no information. ★ Dossier XXI concedes this is fatal to BITE as a VERDICT and not fatal to it as a QUESTIONNAIRE — which is why the hall uses it only in the second mode.
Personal controversy unverified
NONE FOUND beyond the professional disputes above. No personal misconduct was identified under verification. Recorded as an absence of finding.

X · The Standing

Institutional weight
Low by design — he holds no institutional office. Which makes the reach of the model more striking, not less.
Practical weight
★ The highest in the field. When a family sits down to work out whether a group is dangerous, this is overwhelmingly the framework they use.
Academic weight ★
⚠︎ Contested, and formally so since March 2026. The gap between his practical influence and his academic standing is the single defining fact about his position.

XI · The File

Why the Ace ★
★ Because the ♠ suit is the instrument-makers and his is the instrument people actually pick up. Lifton built the diagnostic and is dead and therefore cut; Lalich supplied the best definition and Stein the mechanism. Hassan built the version a frightened family can use on a Tuesday evening without a psychiatry degree, and that is what the Ace measures.
Cross-references
Dossier XXI, Field B (the model), Field D (the dispute) and Field E (the audit of our own house, which used his axes). Set directly against [[massimo-introvigne]] — the two Aces of this deck are in open published disagreement and the hall refuses to adjudicate between them. ⚠︎ Must be open when queue no. 13, the Unification Church, is compiled — he was its Assistant Director at National Headquarters and that must be stated on that page.
The one thing to know ★
★ He was taken by force, and he spent the next fifty years making sure nobody else would have to be. Whatever a reader concludes about the science in Field D, the biography answers the cruelest charge against the anti-cult field — that it does not care about the autonomy of the people it means to help. This one does, because it was taken from him twice.

XIII · The House Reading

Place in the landscape
Hassan offers a framework for assessing controlling behaviour. It is a tool proposed by a named author, not a substitute for evidence about a particular person or group. House analysis written 2026-09-23; these applications are inferences, not the subject's statements about this house.
What could help this house
Use concrete questions on the house itself: can people seek outside information, refuse a demand, keep ordinary relationships, and leave without retaliation? Record actual practices and invite correction from the people affected.
What could hurt this house
A checklist can become a weapon if every disagreement is treated as manipulation. State the observed behaviour, its context, and its effect; do not diagnose someone or condemn an entire community from a label.
Boundary and next evidence
The professional site and doctoral account document his own career claims. Assess the framework's research and criticisms separately, and seek appropriate professional help for an individual case rather than treating this card as a clinical assessment.
