A field file on a person in a public role, from the public record. Private lines (family, health, home, security, personal wealth) are kept at home and not shown.
I · Identity
- Full legal name
- David Maran Royel. Mar Awa III is the ecclesiastical name taken at his election in 2021 — Awa after Mar Awa I, Catholicos of the fifth century.
- Name in office ★
- Catholicos-Patriarch of the East, head of the Holy Apostolic Catholic Assyrian Church of the East. Styled His Holiness. The 122nd holder of the office.
- Born
- 4 July 1975, Chicago, Illinois, to Koresh and Flourence Royel. A first-generation Assyrian American — and, on the American national feast day, which he has never been allowed to forget.
- Age
- 51. Young for a patriarch, and young for this deck: he could hold this office for thirty years.
- The distinction ★
- The first Western-born Catholicos-Patriarch in the entire history of the Church of the East. A line running to the apostles, seated in Persia, Baghdad, Hakkari, Cyprus and Chicago — and its 122nd holder was born in Illinois.
- Nationality partial
- American by birth. Whether he holds Iraqi citizenship or residency alongside it could not be confirmed. Not verified.
- Languages partial
- Syriac and English certainly, both native-level; Italian effectively certain from the Roman doctorate; Arabic very probable from the Erbil seat. No verified full list found — the specific competences are inferred from where he has lived and are marked as such.
II · The Likeness & the Ground
- Places of operation ★
- Chicago, Rome, California, Erbil — and the sequence is the argument. He is what the diaspora sent back. Born and ordained in the American exile capital, credentialed in Rome, given his first see in California, and now governing from Iraq. The same pattern produced Mar Paul III Nona, the new Chaldean patriarch, recalled from Sydney in 2026. Both East Syriac churches are now led by men the West raised and returned.
- Chicago, Illinois1975 born · 1992 deacon · 1999 priest
Born 4 July 1975 to Koresh and Flourence Royel — a first-generation Assyrian American. Subdeacon at 16, deacon at 17, both ordained by Mar Dinkha IV at Mar Gewargis Cathedral. Chicago was the de facto capital of this church for eighty years of patriarchal exile, and he is its son. - Romepost-1999
Licentiate and Doctorate of Sacred Theology, Pontifical Oriental Institute. The doctorate matters institutionally: it is why he can meet Rome and Constantinople as a peer rather than a petitioner, and why a church of 400,000 conducts the diplomacy of a much larger one. - Modesto / Central California2008–2021
Consecrated bishop 30 November 2008 before a reported 2,500 people — the first American-born bishop in the church's history. As Bishop of California he founded St Isaac of Nineveh Monastery, described as the only active monastery in the entire church worldwide. - Ankawa, Erbil2021–
The patriarchal seat, in the Christian district of Erbil in Iraqi Kurdistan. He governs from the homeland his family left — the see having returned after roughly eighty years abroad in Cyprus and Chicago.
- Chicago, Illinois1975 born · 1992 deacon · 1999 priest
III · The Office
- Held since ★
- Elected 8 September 2021 by the Holy Synod, succeeding Mar Gewargis III, who had resigned.
- Enthronement partial
- Reported as installed 13 September 2021. ⚠︎ Sources conflict: one account gives consecration as taking place the month after the election rather than five days after. The election date is corroborated twice and is firm; the installation date is reported and is carried as reported.
- What the office is
- Head of an autocephalous apostolic church. He presides over the Holy Synod, consecrates bishops, and is the final authority in doctrine and discipline. He is not a pope: he governs with the synod, and the synod elected him and could in principle depose him.
- Term ★
- For life. No retirement age, no term limit. But his own predecessor resigned in 2021, so voluntary departure is now a live precedent in this church rather than a theoretical one.
- Seat
- Ankawa, Erbil, Iraqi Kurdistan — the see having come home after roughly eighty years abroad, exiled since the Patriarch was stripped of Iraqi citizenship after the Simele massacre of 1933.
- The body he governs
- ~400,000–500,000 worldwide (estimates run 385,000–500,000). The smallest body in the hall of dossiers, and one whose Iraqi share has fallen with the country's Christian population from ~1.5 million in 2003 to ~250,000.
- Predecessors
- Mar Gewargis III (2015–2021, resigned) · Mar Dinkha IV (1976–2015, who ordained him and signed the 1994 declaration) · Mar Shimun XXIII (assassinated 1975, the last hereditary patriarch).
- Other offices held
- President of the Commission on Inter-Church Relations and Educational Development (CIRED), and president of the National Executive Committee of the Assyrian Church of the East Youth Association.
IV · The Power
- Real jurisdiction ★
- Total, and very small. Absolute in his own communion — and his communion is eleven bishops and under half a million people. He has more unshared authority than most men in this hall and less to exercise it on than almost any of them.
- The synod he presides over
- Eleven men including himself — three metropolitans, seven bishops. The complete government of an apostolic church fits around one table, which is why this deck's ♠ suit is complete at eleven rather than thirteen.
- Appointment power
- Consecrates bishops with the synod. With eleven sees, a single appointment shifts roughly nine per cent of the church's governing body — the most concentrated appointment leverage of any figure in the hall.
- Convening power
- Calls and presides over the Holy Synod; sets its agenda. The Secretary General (Mar Benyamin Elya, 9♠) keeps its record — an office Mar Awa himself held before his election.
- Diplomatic reach ★
- Far beyond his numbers. Received by Pope Leo XIV at the Vatican on 27 October 2025; his inter-church chairman met Patriarch Bartholomew in February 2026; he attended the installation of the new Chaldean patriarch in May 2026. The Roman doctorate is the instrument here.
- Budget unverified
- UNVERIFIED. No figure for the patriarchate's finances could be confirmed on 27 July 2026. The church is funded substantially by the diaspora — Australia, the United States, Europe — which is a structural fact worth more than a number would be.
- What he cannot do ★
- He cannot protect anybody. No state, no army, no concordat, no seat at any negotiating table with force behind it. When militias take ground in the Nineveh Plains, the Catholicos-Patriarch of the East has moral standing and nothing else — which is the condition this church has been in for nineteen centuries.
V · Formation
- Subdeacon
- At age 16, ordained by Mar Dinkha IV at Mar Gewargis Cathedral, Chicago.
- Deacon
- 19 January 1992, at 17 — again under Mar Dinkha IV. He has been in orders since he was a schoolboy.
- First degree
- BA, Loyola University Chicago, 1997.
- Second degree
- BA in Sacred Theology, University of St Mary of the Lake, 1999 — a Roman Catholic seminary in Illinois. His theological formation began in a Catholic institution, which is relevant to everything he has since done ecumenically.
- Priest
- 23 May 1999.
- Doctorate ★
- Licentiate and Doctor of Sacred Theology, Pontifical Oriental Institute, Rome. The head of the church that Rome called Nestorian for fifteen centuries holds his doctorate from a Roman pontifical faculty.
- Cor-Bishop and Archdeacon
- Cor-bishop 15 July 2006; archdeacon 23 November 2008 — a week before his episcopal consecration.
- Bishop ★
- Consecrated 30 November 2008 at Modesto, California, before a reported 2,500 people. The first American-born bishop of the Assyrian Church of the East. Bishop of California, and Secretary of the Holy Synod.
VI · The Ties
- His patron ★
- Mar Dinkha IV — who ordained him subdeacon, deacon and priest, consecrated him bishop, and signed the 1994 Common Christological Declaration with John Paul II. The man who withdrew the Nestorian charge formed the man who now holds the throne.
- The men he sits with
- The ten other members of the synod — Mar Meelis Zaia (K♠), his Patriarchal Vicar and the church's number two, forty years in the Australian see; Mar Awraham Youkhanis (10♠), who conducts the ecumenical work; Mar Benyamin Elya (9♠), who holds the secretaryship Mar Awa once held.
- Outside the communion
- Mar Paul III Nona (A♦), the new Chaldean patriarch — the same people, the same rite, in communion with Rome; Mar Awa attended his installation on 29 May 2026 and called it a new chapter between sister churches. And Mar Yakoob III Danil (K♦) of the Ancient Church of the East — the rival throne, and the one relationship he has not been able to resolve.
VII · Doctrine & Position
- Christology
- The church's settled formula from Babai the Great (Synod of 612): two natures, two qnome, one parsopa — one Christ, one Son, one Lord. He is a specialist in this material, not merely a signatory to it.
- On the Nestorian label
- The church states it does not hold the doctrine the label refers to. He is the inheritor of the 1994 declaration that settled this with Rome, and its most academically equipped defender.
- Published work ★
- Mysteries of the Kingdom: The Sacraments of the Assyrian Church of the East (2011) — written while he was Bishop of California. A sitting patriarch who has published a monograph on his own church's sacramental theology is a rarity in this hall.
- Ecumenical posture
- Unusually forward. He has publicly called for stronger cooperation among the Eastern Churches, and argues that global awareness can ease the suffering of Middle Eastern Christians. His strategy is visibility.
- On the Chaldeans
- Warm and explicit — "sister churches." Given that the Chaldean Catholic Church is the larger half of the same people, this is the most consequential relationship he manages, and he manages it publicly rather than defensively.
- On reunion with the Ancient Church of the East
- The doctrinal barrier is nil; the 1968 breach was over the calendar. Talks in Chicago in 2022 failed and the rival throne was promptly filled. Position as of July 2026: cordial, unresolved.
- THE MACHINE QUESTION unverified
- NO POSITION ON RECORD — LEFT OPEN. A search of the public record on 27 July 2026 found no statement, no commission, no working document and no recorded remark by this patriarch on artificial intelligence. It would take one paragraph to infer a confident answer from his church's Creator/creature line and its unique refusal of images — and that inference would be ours, not his. This hall does not manufacture a datum and then count it. See Dossier XVI, Field F.
- Where he stands to our house
- Nearer than the label ever suggested. His church worships without icons or statues — alone among the ancient communions — which puts an unbroken apostolic body on our side of the Second Commandment. The distance is Nestorius, the sacraments, and tradition. It is not Christology.
VIII · The Sword & the State
- Civil power ★
- None. None at all. No state, no concordat, no sovereign entity, no vote. His church has never in nineteen centuries governed anything.
- Advocacy record ★
- Before his election he spoke at the 2014 In Defense of Christians Summit and met White House Deputy National Security Advisor Ben Rhodes in March 2015 regarding ISIL's attacks on Christians in Iraq and Syria. He was working Washington on this file while ISIS held Mosul.
- The ground he governs
- The Nineveh Plains — his church's heartland, emptied by ISIS in 2014, with return incomplete, property restitution unresolved and Iran-aligned militias holding checkpoints and territory. The frontline see is Mar Abrs Youkhanna's (8♠), not his.
- The political arm
- Not his. The Assyrian Democratic Movement (Q♦) and its Nineveh Plain Protection Units are lay and political; the ADM currently holds zero seats in Iraq's 329-seat parliament. Church and nation are deeply fused in this community, but the patriarch does not command the party.
- The inherited lesson ★
- His office spent eighty years in exile because the Iraqi state massacred Assyrian villagers at Simele in 1933 — one year after independence, to a community that had served that state's army — and stripped the Patriarch of citizenship. He has moved the see back to the country that did it. That is either the bravest institutional decision in this hall or the most exposed, and it is probably both.
IX · Conflict & Controversy
- Personal controversy unverified
- NONE FOUND. No financial, doctrinal, or disciplinary controversy attaching to him personally was located in the public record on 27 July 2026. Recorded as a null result, not as a clearance.
- The unresolved schism ★
- The Ancient Church of the East breach (1968) remains open on his watch. Reunification talks opened in Chicago in May 2022 — with nothing doctrinal to resolve — and failed; the rival church then elected Mar Yakoob III Danil, filling the throne a merger would have had to vacate. The most winnable reconciliation in the hall, and it is not won.
- The American question partial
- A Chicago-born patriarch governing from Erbil carries an obvious line of criticism — that the diaspora legislates for a people it does not live among. This was precisely one of the grievances underneath the 1968 split, when the patriarch was in America. No specific current controversy on this point was found; the structural tension is real and is noted as structural.
- Adjacent scandal
- The 2026 fall of Cardinal Sako — the Chaldean patriarch, who resigned 9 March 2026 amid a financial and legal controversy — did not touch this church, and the contrast is instructive: it was the large, Rome-backed body that lost its head to scandal, not the small stateless one. Size buys capacity and imports exposure.
X · The Standing
- Institutional weight
- Absolute within a very small perimeter. On paper the highest authority of an apostolic church; in practice the head of a body smaller than many single dioceses in this hall.
- Personal weight ★
- High and rising. A doctorate from a Roman pontifical faculty, a published monograph, a Vatican audience with Leo XIV in October 2025, and an inter-church commission that is genuinely active. He is taken seriously in rooms his numbers would not open.
- Ecumenical activity partial
- Verified 2026: attended the installation of Chaldean Patriarch Mar Paul III Nona (29 May); met the Indian Consul in Erbil and sent condolences to the Georgian Orthodox Church on the death of its Patriarch (March); a visit to the Indian diocese was announced for after Easter. Whether the India visit took place was not confirmed.
XI · The File
- Why the Ace
- Because in this church the Ace is not a matter of judgement. He is the head, the office is for life, and the synod is eleven men. In the Catholic deck the Ace sits atop a billion people and a sovereign state; here it sits atop four hundred thousand and no state at all — and the authority is, if anything, less diluted.

- The one thing to know ★
- He is what the diaspora sent home. A boy born in Chicago on the Fourth of July, ordained deacon at seventeen in an American cathedral, credentialed in Rome, made a bishop in California — now governing from Erbil the church his people were driven out of. His church spent eighty years in exile because a government massacred its villagers and expelled its patriarch. He moved the throne back. Whether that was faith or miscalculation will not be known in his lifetime, and he made the decision anyway.

XIII · The House Reading
- Place in the landscape
- His formation connects American church life, theological study in Rome, and patriarchal responsibility in Iraq. The geography helps explain a church whose communities cannot be understood through a single country. House analysis written 2026-09-23; these applications are inferences, not the subject's statements about this house.
- What could help this house
- Translation and teaching can preserve continuity across generations and languages. Give the house's important practices explanations that children and newcomers can actually read.
- What could hurt this house
- An unfamiliar church can be reduced to an old label from somebody else's dispute. Begin with its own stated teaching, then compare the disagreement precisely instead of treating a label as a complete description.
- Boundary and next evidence
- These church records establish education, publication, election, and enthronement. Distinguish this institution from similarly named churches and identify the actual participants in any ecumenical agreement.
