XVII. SHARED PSYCHOSIS AND THE MANDATE TO KILL

None. No doctrine of any kind was ever identified in this case.

Who led it

URSULA ERIKSSON and SABINA ERIKSSON, identical twins from Sweden, both aged 40. WHICH OF THEM WAS THE PRIMARY WAS NEVER ESTABLISHED, and that gap matters — see the note.

What it worshipped and taught

None. The twins were travelling together and became convinced, in some manner never satisfactorily reconstructed, that they were in danger and that things around them were not what they appeared. THIS IS THE ONE CASE IN THIS ERA THAT WAS FILMED. A BBC documentary crew was riding with the Central Motorway Police Group and recorded the whole roadside episode, which is why the case is discussed far more often than it is understood.

Ursula Eriksson; Sabina Eriksson; GLENN HOLLINSHEAD, aged 54, of Fenton, who took Sabina in and was killed; the Central Motorway Police Group officers; MR JUSTICE SAUNDERS, who sentenced her.

SABINA SERVED HER SENTENCE. URSULA WAS NEVER PROSECUTED AND LEFT BRITAIN. THIS FILE MAKES NO CLAIM ABOUT WHERE EITHER WOMAN IS NOW.

Entry 171 says the treatment for an induced delusion is separation, and that the secondary often improves once removed. THE ERIKSSON TWINS WERE SEPARATED ON THE HARD SHOULDER OF THE M6 ON 17 MAY. SABINA KILLED A MAN THREE DAYS LATER. Whatever was wrong with her did not resolve when her sister was taken away in an ambulance; on the available record it got worse. IF THIS FILE ONLY PRINTED THE CASES THAT FIT, PARKER AND HULME WOULD BE THE WHOLE ERA. This one does not fit, and it is printed for that reason.

THE FOLIE A DEUX LABEL HERE IS A DEFENCE SUBMISSION AND A PRESS HEADLINE, NOT AN AGREED FINDING. The structure entry 171 describes requires an identified primary and an identified secondary. NOBODY EVER ESTABLISHED WHICH TWIN WAS WHICH. Ursula was never charged, never tried and never examined to the depth Sabina was, so the person the defence named as the source of the delusion was the one person in the case whose mind was never put before a court. That is not a diagnosis. It is an argument that happened to be untestable, and it worked.

THE INSTITUTIONAL FACT IS THE ONE WORTH KEEPING. A woman ran into motorway traffic, was hit by a car, assaulted the officers who saved her, spent two nights in a cell, and was released by a court with a one-day sentence and no psychiatric assessment. WITHIN HOURS A STRANGER TOOK HER IN OUT OF KINDNESS AND WAS DEAD THE NEXT EVENING. Era XV (153-163) is the record of what the asylum system did to people; this is a record of what its absence does. THE COMPLAINT IS NOT THAT SHE WAS RELEASED RATHER THAN JAILED. It is that between the motorway and the front door of Glenn Hollinshead's house, at no point did the machinery that had her in its hands ask a doctor a question.

ONE LAST CAUTION, BECAUSE THIS CASE IS ALMOST ALWAYS TOLD WRONG. The two events are widely compressed into one — the twins ran into traffic and then one of them stabbed someone. THEY ARE THREE DAYS AND A COURT HEARING APART, and the hearing is the part that matters.

Its timeline

  1. 17 MAY 2008 SHORTLY AFTER 1PM, AT KEELE SERVICES ON THE M6, BOTH WOMEN RUN INTO LIVE MOTORWAY TRAFFIC. Ursula is struck by an articulated lorry and Sabina by a car. BOTH SURVIVE; Ursula's legs are badly injured. Officers who restrain Sabina are attacked by her. The entire sequence is on film.
  2. 17-19 MAY 2008 Sabina is held in police custody in Stoke-on-Trent. She is described as calm and cooperative, though odd.
  3. 19 MAY 2008 AT THE MAGISTRATES' COURT SHE PLEADS GUILTY TO TRESPASS ON THE MOTORWAY AND TO ASSAULTING A POLICE OFFICER. SHE IS SENTENCED TO ONE DAY, WHICH SHE HAS ALREADY SERVED, AND WALKS FREE. No psychiatric assessment had detained her.
  4. 19 MAY 2008 THAT SAME EVENING, AROUND 7PM, she is seen wandering in Fenton by GLENN HOLLINSHEAD, who takes her home, feeds her and lets her stay the night.
  5. 20 MAY 2008 AT ABOUT 7.40PM THE FOLLOWING EVENING SHE STABS HIM WITH A KITCHEN KNIFE AND HE DIES. Reports of the number of wounds differ between four and five and this file does not pick one. She flees, injuring herself with a hammer and jumping from a bridge.
  6. 6 JUNE 2008 Arrested in hospital.
  7. 11 SEPTEMBER 2008 Discharged into custody and charged with murder.
  8. 2 SEPTEMBER 2009 AT NOTTINGHAM CROWN COURT SHE PLEADS GUILTY TO MANSLAUGHTER ON THE GROUND OF DIMINISHED RESPONSIBILITY. The plea is accepted. The defence advances FOLIE A DEUX, casting Sabina as the secondary and her twin as the primary; the court also hears evidence of a rare disorder involving voices, described elsewhere as an ACUTE POLYMORPHIC PSYCHOTIC DISORDER.
  9. 26 NOVEMBER 2009 MR JUSTICE SAUNDERS SENTENCES HER TO FIVE YEARS, saying openly that the sentence will seem inadequate to Hollinshead's family.
  10. SEPTEMBER 2008 onward URSULA IS NEVER CHARGED WITH ANYTHING. She was discharged from hospital and left the country.

Convicted of the manslaughter of Glenn Hollinshead · born 1967 · active 2008–2009

One of two Swedish identical twins who ran into live traffic on the M6 on 17 MAY 2008 in front of a police camera crew. Held for two nights, she pleaded guilty at the magistrates' court on 19 MAY to trespass on the motorway and assaulting a police officer, was sentenced to one day already served, and walked free WITH NO PSYCHIATRIC ASSESSMENT. That same evening GLENN HOLLINSHEAD took her in off the street. She killed him the following evening.

Before the law. Manslaughter by reason of diminished responsibility; five years, November 2009. Sentence long since served.

Where things stand. NO CLAIM IS MADE HERE ABOUT WHERE SHE IS NOW. She served her sentence and nothing consulted establishes her circumstances since. THE CASE CONTRADICTS ENTRY 171 AND IS KEPT FOR THAT REASON: she was separated from her twin on the hard shoulder on 17 May and killed a man three days later. Separation did not resolve the secondary's state; on the available record it preceded the worst of it.

  1. 17 MAY 2008 Runs into M6 traffic at Keele services and is struck by a car; attacks the officers who restrain her.
  2. 19 MAY 2008 Released by the magistrates. Meets Glenn Hollinshead at about 7pm and stays the night at his house.
  3. 20 MAY 2008 Kills him with a kitchen knife, then flees and injures herself.

Where things stand. THIS FILE MAKES NO CLAIM ABOUT HER CURRENT WHEREABOUTS OR CONDITION, AND THAT IS DELIBERATE. Her present location is published elsewhere; The defence named Ursula as the primary and it worked, and the person so named was THE ONE PERSON IN THE CASE WHOSE MIND WAS NEVER PUT BEFORE A COURT. She was not assessed to the depth her sister was, was not represented, and had no opportunity to contest it. That is not a finding. It is an argument that happened to be untestable.
