The Tanganyika Laughter Epidemic
The Kashasha laughter epidemic
1962 – 1963 · Kashasha, Nshamba and the Bukoba district, Tanganyika (now Tanzania)
XVI. CONTAGION — SYMPTOMS THAT SPREAD WITHOUT A PATHOGEN
None doctrinally, though the affected schools were mission-run.
Who led it
No leader. Documented contemporaneously by medical officers in the Central African Journal of Medicine.
What it worshipped and taught
Not doctrine but symptoms. THE POPULAR NAME IS BADLY MISLEADING: this was not joy. Attacks involved uncontrollable laughing AND crying, agitation, restlessness, fainting, pain and respiratory difficulty, lasting from hours to days, and recurring.
Who was in it
The three girls at Kashasha in whom it began; 95 of the 159 pupils at that school; roughly a thousand people across the district.
How it ended, or where it stands
BURNED OUT ON ITS OWN by around mid-1963. No physical cause was ever identified and none has been proposed that survives scrutiny.
The dead
NO DEATHS RECORDED.
Of note
THE NAME HAS DONE REAL DAMAGE TO THE UNDERSTANDING OF THIS EVENT. It is told as a comic story about a village that could not stop giggling. The contemporary medical descriptions are of distressed children, some in pain, some unable to breathe properly, some crying rather than laughing, for hours at a stretch, over 18 months. NOTHING ABOUT IT WAS FUNNY TO THE PEOPLE IN IT.
THE SINGLE MOST INSTRUCTIVE FACT IS THAT CLOSING THE SCHOOL MADE IT WORSE. The intervention assumed a contaminant in the building. Because the actual vector was the pupils and their relationships, dispersing them dispersed it — straight into fourteen more schools and a district. IF YOU MISDIAGNOSE THE MECHANISM, YOUR CONTAINMENT MEASURE BECOMES YOUR TRANSMISSION ROUTE. Compare 168, where a public statement that named the mechanism correctly ended an outbreak in days.
WHY ADOLESCENT GIRLS IN A BOARDING SCHOOL, WHICH IS THE PATTERN ACROSS THIS WHOLE ERA. The honest answer is that the demographic is consistent and the explanation is not settled. What can be said is structural: closed institutions, dense social ties, sustained pressure, low individual control, and a group that observes one another constantly. Those conditions describe a mission boarding school in 1962, a New York high school in 2011 (169), and a great many of the communities in the rest of this dossier.

Its timeline
- 9 DECEMBER 1961 Tanganyika becomes independent. The mission schools are under new expectations and considerable pressure.
- 30 JANUARY 1962 AT A MISSION-RUN GIRLS' BOARDING SCHOOL IN KASHASHA, THREE PUPILS BEGIN LAUGHING AND CANNOT STOP. It spreads. Eventually 95 OF THE 159 PUPILS, AGED 12 TO 18, ARE AFFECTED. Staff are not.
- 18 MARCH 1962 THE SCHOOL IS CLOSED, AND CLOSING IT SPREADS THE OUTBREAK. Pupils carry it home to their villages and to other schools.
- APRIL–MAY 1962 At NSHAMBA, a village about 55 miles west of Bukoba where several of the girls lived, 217 PEOPLE ARE AFFECTED OVER 34 DAYS.
- 1962–63 In all, ABOUT 14 SCHOOLS ARE CLOSED AND AROUND 1,000 PEOPLE ARE AFFECTED. The phenomenon dies out roughly 18 months after it began.
