Seven Angels Ministry

the Mancoba brothers' church

c.2010 – 2018 · Ngcobo, Eastern Cape, South Africa

XIII. FILLING THE GAPS — ASIA, AFRICA AND LATIN AMERICA

Fully religious — small charismatic sect

Who led it

The seven MANCOBA BROTHERS, sons of the founder Siphiwo Mancoba, who presented themselves collectively as seven angels sent by God.

What it worshipped and taught

The brothers as angelic beings with divine authority. Members surrendered social grants and possessions; children were kept from school; women were reportedly held as 'wives'. The group degenerated into armed robbery, culminating in an attack on a police station.

Who was in it

The Mancoba brothers; the five murdered officers — W/O Zuko Mbini, Constables Kuhle Mateta, Nkosiphendule Pongco, Sibongiseni Sandlana and Zuko Nelson Ntsheku — and an off-duty soldier; the convicted members Andani Monco, Kwanele Ndlwana, Siphosomzi Tshefu, Phumzile Mhlatywa and Siphesihle Tatsi; the roughly 40 people, including children, removed from the compound.

How it ended, or where it stands

Destroyed by prosecution after the police station attack.

The dead

6 (five police officers and a soldier), plus three members killed in the raid

Of note

Included to represent sub-Saharan Africa outside the East African cases that dominate the English-language record. Also an unusual instance of a small sect attacking the state directly rather than turning inward.
