XII. THE WIDER FIELD — CONCISE ENTRIES
Fully religious
Who led it
JOHN (IOANN) BERESLAVSKY, born Veniamin Bereslavsky in Moscow in 1946, who says the Virgin revealed herself to him in November 1984. Since 2009 he has lived in Spain as 'Juan de San Grial'.
What it worshipped and taught
An apocalyptic Marian Orthodoxy centred on the Virgin as the supreme mother guiding Russia. Critical sources describe a RITE OF RENUNCIATION OF THE MOTHER, in which members rejected their natural mothers in favour of the Virgin; the movement's scholarly literature treats that as a critics' account.
Who was in it
Bereslavsky; the Russian anti-cult campaigner Alexander Dvorkin.
How it ended, or where it stands
ACTIVE AND MARGINAL. Its founder’s books drew Russian anti-extremism proceedings in 2021. NO SOURCE CONSULTED ESTABLISHES ITS STATUS IN 2024–26, and this file asserts none — given the direction of Russian religious regulation, that gap should not be read as safety.

Of note
NOBODY CONNECTED WITH THIS GROUP HAS EVER BEEN CONVICTED OF ANYTHING, AND THAT IS THE POINT OF RECORDING IT. The 2006 arrests produced no proven charge, only a small fine. The 2021 ruling was against BOOKS, not people, and the SOVA Center logged them under MISUSE of the anti-extremism law. What the Russian state actually did was DEREGISTER THE CONGREGATIONS, which needs no trial, no evidence and no defendant. THIS FILE COUNTS THAT AS AN OUTCOME. A movement can be dismantled without a single person being charged, and a dossier that only records convictions will show a blank where the most effective mechanism was used. Compare 161: the state has more than one way to answer a believer, and prosecution is only the loudest.
THE ONE ENTRY IN THIS DOSSIER THAT CLAIMS DESCENT FROM TWO OTHERS. Bereslavsky’s movement reaches explicitly for the BOGOMILS (015) and is described in the scholarly literature as a NEW CATHAR CHURCH (016) — and one of the texts Russian prosecutors sought to ban is titled THE BOGOMIL GOSPEL. Set that against what those two entries actually establish: the Bogomils are known largely through the writings of the men who burned them, and a major school of scholarship doubts an organised Cathar church existed at all. A modern movement is claiming inheritance from a lineage that may itself be substantially an artefact of its persecutors.

Its timeline
- NOVEMBER 1984 Bereslavsky's claimed revelation at the Smolensk cathedral; the movement begins underground. He is ordained in the True Orthodox Church in 1985.
- 1989–1991 Registered first as a trade union, as the MOTHER OF GOD CENTRE, in 1989, then in April 1991 with the Russian Ministry of Justice as a philanthropic, educational and publishing body.
- 1990s Peak influence in post-Soviet Russia; heavy state and Orthodox Church opposition.
- 1997 RENAMED THE ORTHODOX CHURCH OF THE SOVEREIGN MOTHER OF GOD (OCSMG), the name under which it is studied academically — where it is also, strikingly, described as A NEW CATHAR CHURCH.
- DECEMBER 2006 OCSMG MEMBERS WHO STAGED AN EXHIBITION, SOLOVKI — THE SECOND GOLGOTHA, ARE ARRESTED in Lipetsk on an accusation of causing psychological harm to a group of students. THE CHARGES WERE NEVER PROVEN; only a small fine was imposed. THE STATE INSTEAD BEGAN REVOKING THE REGISTRATIONS OF LOCAL CONGREGATIONS, which required no court to find anything.
- 2009 Bereslavsky relocates to Spain, from where he continues to direct the movement.
- 2002–2012 Registered congregations fall from 30 to 19 as local authorities revoke registrations.
- 2021 Moscow prosecutors ask a court in December 2020 to declare THE BOGOMIL GOSPEL and THE ROSE OF THE SERAPHITES extremist, and a Moscow court does so in April 2021. The SOVA Center logged the action in its surveys of the MISUSE of Russia’s anti-extremism law.
