Konstantin Rudnev
Great Shaman Shri Dzhnan Avatar Muni (to followers)
Founder, Ashram Shambala · — · active 1989–present
A former military officer who called himself an extraterrestrial from Sirius and recruited through free yoga and dance workshops across Russia. Convicted in 2013 of rape and drug offences — a trial his defenders call a sham — he was released in 2021, moved to Montenegro, and was arrested in Argentina in 2025.
Before the law. CONVICTED in Russia, 2013; 11 years, served. Currently in PRE-TRIAL DETENTION IN ARGENTINA on human-trafficking allegations; NO VERDICT.
Where things stand. BACK IN PRISON SINCE JUNE 2026, IN PRE-TRIAL DETENTION. THE PROSECUTION APPEALED the substitution of house arrest for detention, and on 10 JUNE 2026 the Federal Chamber of Criminal Cassation ordered him returned to a federal prison. The charges are trafficking-related (trata de personas). NO VERDICT. SOURCE WARNING, STRENGTHENED: ESSENTIALLY ALL RECENT ENGLISH-LANGUAGE COVERAGE OF THIS CASE COMES FROM ADVOCACY ORGANISATIONS CAMPAIGNING ON HIS BEHALF — Bitter Winter, Human Rights Without Frontiers, and CAP Freedom of Conscience — which describe the detention as arbitrary and the allegations as collapsed. Those are contested characterisations from interested parties, not findings. The procedural facts above are reported consistently; the framing around them should not be treated as established, and no comparably detailed account from the prosecution side is available in English.

Massimo Introvigne
—
Sociologist; founder of CESNUR; editor of Bitter Winter · born 14 June 1955 · active 1988–present
An Italian sociologist who founded CESNUR and edits Bitter Winter, and who is the most prominent academic defender of new religious movements against state persecution — particularly of the Church of Almighty God and Falun Gong in China, where his work documents real and severe repression. He is also sharply criticised for what detractors call systematic minimisation of abuse allegations, and CESNUR's funding and its closeness to the groups it studies are contested. Both readings are represented in this dossier: his China reporting is cited, and his characterisations are flagged as contested where they appear.
Before the law. Academic; expert witness, generally for the movements.
Where things stand. LIVING AND ACTIVE — confirmed August 2026. He directs CESNUR and edits BITTER WINTER, and was still publishing in 2026, including a MARCH 2026 CESNUR PAPER attacking Steven Hassan’s BITE model as pseudoscience. THIS FILE CITES HIM FOR FACTUAL REPORTING ON RELIGIOUS PERSECUTION IN CHINA, WHERE HIS WORK IS VALUABLE, AND FLAGS HIS CHARACTERISATIONS WHERE THEY ARE CONTESTED — he is widely criticised for a consistently sympathetic reading of groups others classify as harmful. HE IS ALSO A PARTY TO A DISPUTE INSIDE THIS DOSSIER: see STEVEN HASSAN (L210), whose model he has published against. Both men are cited here; neither is disinterested.
- 1988 Founds CESNUR (Center for Studies on New Religions).
- 1990s–2000s Becomes the leading academic critic of European anti-cult legislation.
- 2018 Launches Bitter Winter, documenting religious persecution in China.
- 2020s Publishes extensively on the Church of Almighty God and on Konstantin Rudnev's prosecution.
