Ananda Church of Self-Realization
Ananda Sangha
1968 – present · Nevada City, California; Assisi, Italy; India
XII. THE WIDER FIELD — CONCISE ENTRIES
Fully religious — Yogananda-derived
Who led it
SWAMI KRIYANANDA (born James Donald Walters, 1926–2013), a direct disciple of Paramahansa Yogananda expelled from the Self-Realization Fellowship in 1962.
What it worshipped and taught
Kriya Yoga in the Yogananda lineage, with Kriyananda as the successor teacher — a claim the Self-Realization Fellowship rejected in extensive litigation.
Who was in it
Kriyananda; ANNE-MARIE BERTOLUCCI, whose 1994 suit produced the key verdict; the SRF, which sued over copyright and trademark from 1990.
How it ended, or where it stands
ACTIVE, with communities in the United States, Italy and India. NAYASWAMI JYOTISH AND NAYASWAMI DEVI serve as spiritual directors under the succession Kriyananda set out in his will — an orderly handover, which is rare enough in this dossier to be worth noting.

Of note
THE LEGAL FINDING IS WHAT MAKES THIS ENTRY USEFUL, AND IT IS NARROWER AND SHARPER THAN THE USUAL SCANDAL. A California jury did not merely find that a guru had slept with disciples; it found that CALLING HIMSELF A SWAMI — a title asserting celibacy — WAS ITSELF A DECEPTION, and that the church was liable for failing to supervise him, with malice and fraud attaching to the institution. This is the celibacy-for-followers, exemption-for-the-leader pattern documented elsewhere in this dossier (see 126), with the difference that here a court put a number on it.
Its timeline
- 1968 Ananda Village founded in California.
- 1990–2002 Twelve years of litigation with the Self-Realization Fellowship. The outcome largely favours Ananda: SRF has no sole right to the term Self-realization or to Yogananda's name and likeness, though Ananda pays 29,000 dollars over sound recordings.
- 1994 ANNE-MARIE BERTOLUCCI, a former resident, sues Kriyananda and Ananda alleging sexual harassment and fraud.
- 1998 THE VERDICT IS UNUSUALLY PRECISE. Kriyananda is found liable for DECEPTION IN HIS USE OF THE TITLE ‘SWAMI’ — a title that asserts celibacy — while having had sexual relationships with several women across Ananda’s thirty-year history. THE CHURCH ITSELF IS FOUND LIABLE FOR NEGLIGENT SUPERVISION, with a finding of MALICE AND FRAUD against the institution, not merely the man.
- AFTER THE VERDICT Under Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, Ananda settles for 1.8 MILLION DOLLARS, paid over five years, in return for an end to further suits.
- 21 APRIL 2013 Kriyananda dies at the Assisi community. His will names NAYASWAMI JYOTISH as spiritual successor.
