Adidam
Free Daist Communion; the Dawn Horse Communion
1972 – present · California; Fiji (Naitauba)
XII. THE WIDER FIELD — CONCISE ENTRIES
Fully religious
Who led it
ADI DA SAMRAJ (born Franklin Albert Jones, 1939–2008), who used successive names including Bubba Free John, Da Free John and Da Love-Ananda, and declared himself the AVATAR — the one and only complete incarnation of God in history.
What it worshipped and taught
Devotion to Adi Da himself as the sole means of realisation. Members were required to contemplate his image. In the 1970s and 80s the community underwent what he called the Garbage and the Goddess period — sustained sexual experimentation, group marriage, alcohol and drug use, and psychological ordeals, all framed as crazy wisdom teaching.
Who was in it
Adi Da; BEVERLY O'MAHONEY, whose 1985 suit alleging fraud and assault was dismissed the next year; the plaintiff in a second 1985 suit, settled with payments and confidentiality agreements; the philosopher Ken Wilber, who endorsed him through the 1980s and later alternated between praise and criticism.
How it ended, or where it stands
ACTIVE AND SMALL — about 1,000 members worldwide, a figure estimated to have held roughly steady since 1974, with high turnover. Run under the standing authority of the Ruchira Sannyasin Order; the ashrams, the Code that governs formal practice, and the publication of his writings all continue, alongside a looser field of devotees outside the institution.
Of note
ADIDAM BELONGS TO A PATTERN THIS DOSSIER CAN NOW NAME, because several entries verified in August 2026 turned out to share it. When the founder of a guru-centred movement dies WITHOUT NAMING A HUMAN SUCCESSOR, authority does not vanish — IT DEVOLVES INTO COMMITTEES. Adidam has a consecrated order; SAHAJA YOGA (114) passed to committees and recast its expectation as an inner revolution carried by practitioners; THE CHURCH UNIVERSAL AND TRIUMPHANT (061) installed a two-person presidency and left the messenger role empty. The movements survive, usually smaller and quieter, and the thing that made them dangerous — a living person who could not be contradicted — is precisely what does not get replaced.
Its timeline
- 1972 Founded in Los Angeles.
- 1973–1983 The crazy-wisdom years, including the period he called the Garbage and the Goddess.
- 1983 He moves to NAITAUBA, a Fijian island bought by a wealthy follower from the actor Raymond Burr. It is his main home until his death; he becomes a Fijian citizen in 1993.
- 1985 Two lawsuits and a wave of press coverage. One is dismissed in 1986; the other is settled with payments and confidentiality agreements. NO LEGAL WRONGDOING IS ESTABLISHED.
- 27 NOVEMBER 2008 Adi Da dies at Naitauba, in the Lau Islands of Fiji, AGED 69.
- 2008–present HE HAD LEFT EXPLICIT INSTRUCTIONS AND THEY DID NOT NAME A PERSON. Authority passes to the RUCHIRA SANNYASIN ORDER — devotees consecrated to him — as senior cultural authority ‘in perpetuity’, with a LAY RENUNCIATE ORDER as its working arm. Membership stays small; the communities and the publishing continue.

Founder, Adidam · 3 November 1939 – 27 November 2008 · active 1972–2008
Declared himself the Avatar — the one and only complete incarnation of God in history — making the most extreme claim of any Western teacher. Members were required to contemplate his image as the sole means of realisation. During the 1974 'Garbage and the Goddess' period the community underwent sustained sexual experimentation, group marriage, heavy alcohol and drug use and psychological ordeals, all framed as crazy wisdom. Multiple lawsuits in 1985 alleged fraud, false imprisonment and sexual coercion; the community then relocated to a private island in Fiji.
Before the law. Never criminally charged; the 1985 civil suits were settled or dropped.
Where things stand. Deceased 2008. Adidam continues, very small.
