3HO and Sikh Dharma

Healthy Happy Holy Organization; Kundalini Yoga as taught by Yogi Bhajan

1969 – present (restructured) · Los Angeles; Española, New Mexico; worldwide

X. RUSSIA, KOREA AND SOUTH ASIA

Fully religious — Sikh-derived yoga movement

Who led it

YOGI BHAJAN (born Harbhajan Singh Puri, 26 August 1929 – 6 October 2004), a former Indian customs officer who arrived in Toronto in 1968 and Los Angeles in 1969.

What it worshipped and taught

KUNDALINI YOGA, presented as a secret tradition Bhajan alone was authorised to teach — a claim disputed by Sikh authorities in India, who note that kundalini yoga is not a Sikh practice and that Bhajan held no such lineage. Combined with Sikh dress and practice, arranged marriages assigned by Bhajan, a 3 a.m. rising discipline, and a large business empire including AKAL SECURITY (a federal contractor that grew to about 500 million dollars a year) and YOGI TEA (from 1984).

Who was in it

Yogi Bhajan; Bibiji Inderjit Kaur; Premka Kaur Khalsa (Pamela Dyson), his former secretary, whose 1986 lawsuit and 2019 memoir Premka: White Bird in a Golden Cage broke the story open; KATHERINE FELT, who alleged in a separate 1986 suit that he repeatedly raped her; the children sent to boarding schools in India; the AN OLIVE BRANCH investigation.

How it ended, or where it stands

Organisationally fractured; the yoga practice continues widely, largely detached from Bhajan.

The dead

— (survivors report suicides among former students; no count is established)

Of note

An unusual case in which the organisation commissioned and then published an investigation that found against its own founder, on a balance-of-probabilities standard. That is rare enough to be worth recording as a model.

Its timeline

  1. 1969 Arrives in Los Angeles; 3HO founded.
  2. 1970s–80s Rapid growth among American counterculture converts; Bhajan arranges hundreds of marriages and controls members' careers, finances and family life.
  3. 1975–1990s Hundreds of children are sent to boarding schools in Amritsar and Mussoorie, India, separated from parents for years. Survivors later describe severe physical abuse, malnutrition and sexual abuse at these schools.
  4. 1986 Dyson sues 3HO and Bhajan for 25 million dollars, alleging sexual and psychological abuse, assault, forced fasting and sleep deprivation; Felt sues separately. Dyson's suit is settled out of court for much less. The allegations are largely buried for 30 years.
  5. 6 OCTOBER 2004 Bhajan dies in Española, New Mexico.
  6. 2019 Pamela Dyson publishes Premka; a wave of survivor testimony follows.
  7. AUGUST 2020 THE AN OLIVE BRANCH REPORT. Commissioned in March 2020 by the Siri Singh Sahib Corporation, the five-month investigation heard from 299 people — 96 reporting harm, 140 defending Bhajan, and 63 whose comments fell outside its scope — and concluded it was MORE LIKELY THAN NOT that Bhajan engaged in several types of sexual misconduct and abused his power as a spiritual leader. Bhajan loyalists commissioned a rebuttal attacking its methods.
  8. 2020–present Several successor bodies remove Bhajan's name and images, and the KUNDALINI RESEARCH INSTITUTE revises its materials. Many teachers continue the practice while disavowing the founder.
  9. 2022–DECEMBER 2023 THE INDEPENDENT HEALING AND REPARATIONS PROGRAM, established by the SIRI SINGH SAHIB CORPORATION which oversees 3HO, runs and then closes. NEARLY 600 SURVIVORS FILE CLAIMS ALLEGING THOUSANDS OF INCIDENTS OF ABUSE — a scale far beyond what the 2020 report had described. Accepting a payment requires signing a RELEASE WAIVING ANY FURTHER LEGAL ACTION, though claimants remain free to speak publicly about their experience and about the process itself.
  10. 2023–2026 THE PROGRAMME IS SHARPLY CONTESTED BY THE PEOPLE IT WAS BUILT FOR. Many participating survivors describe it as poorly executed and actively retraumatising, and characterise it as a mechanism for the organisation to stay out of court and avoid full financial and reparative accountability for decades of systemic abuse. Others accepted settlements while saying openly that no payment could address the harm. Survivor petitions seeking fuller justice remain open in the US and Canada.

Its people

Yogi Bhajan

born Harbhajan Singh Puri; later Harbhajan Singh Khalsa Yogiji

Founder, 3HO and Sikh Dharma in the West · 26 August 1929 – 6 October 2004 · active 1969–2004

A former Indian customs officer who arrived in Los Angeles in 1969 and taught Kundalini Yoga as a secret tradition he alone was authorised to transmit — a claim Sikh authorities in India dispute, noting that kundalini yoga is not a Sikh practice and that he held no such lineage. He arranged hundreds of marriages, controlled members' careers and finances, and built a business empire including Akal Security and Yogi Tea. Hundreds of children were sent to boarding schools in India and separated from parents for years. In 2020 an investigation the organisation itself commissioned concluded it was more likely than not that he engaged in several types of sexual misconduct.

Before the law. Never criminally charged. Civil suits settled confidentially in the 1980s.

Where things stand. Deceased 2004. Successor bodies removed his name and images, and the Kundalini Research Institute rewrote its materials. The Siri Singh Sahib Corporation ran an INDEPENDENT HEALING AND REPARATIONS PROGRAM which closed in DECEMBER 2023 after NEARLY 600 SURVIVORS filed claims alleging thousands of incidents of abuse. Payment required signing a legal release. Many survivors have publicly called the process retraumatising and inadequate — a way to avoid court rather than a reckoning.

Pamela Dyson

Premka Kaur Khalsa

3HO whistleblower · born 1943 · active 1968–1984

Yogi Bhajan's secretary and one of the most senior women in 3HO for sixteen years. She left in 1984 and filed suit in 1986 for 25 million dollars alleging sexual and psychological abuse; it was settled out of court for much less and the allegations were effectively buried for three decades. In 2019 she published Premka: White Bird in a Golden Cage, which broke the silence and triggered a wave of survivor testimony — leading directly to the organisation commissioning the independent An Olive Branch report, which in 2020 found it more likely than not that Bhajan engaged in sexual misconduct.

Before the law. Never charged. Civil claimant.

Where things stand. Living — no death record found; she would be 83, and nothing consulted reports on her since the book's reception. HER ROLE BEFORE SHE BROKE WITH THE GROUP IS THE PART THAT GIVES THE BOOK ITS FORCE, and this file omitted it: she was Yogi Bhajan's FIRST SECRETARY, then ADMINISTRATIVE DIRECTOR of the international headquarters of the 3HO Foundation and Sikh Dharma International, and the FIRST SECRETARY GENERAL of the Khalsa Council — THE PERSON HE WAS POSITIONING TO SUCCEED HIM. A DATE TO PIN DOWN: this file calls PREMKA: WHITE BIRD IN A GOLDEN CAGE a 2019 book, and its publisher records publication on 8 JANUARY 2020. The discrepancy is left visible. Its publication is still the proximate cause of the organisation's reckoning — 3HO commissioned the independent inquiry that became the An Olive Branch report in direct response.

  1. 1968 Joins 3HO in its first year; becomes Bhajan's secretary.
  2. 1984 Leaves the organisation.
  3. 1986 Files suit for 25 million dollars; settled out of court for much less.
  4. 1986–2019 The allegations remain largely buried.
  5. 2019 Publishes Premka: White Bird in a Golden Cage.
  6. August 2020 The An Olive Branch report, commissioned by the organisation itself, finds her core allegations more likely than not.
