Fully religious — Korean Christian-derived sect

Who led it

JUNG MYUNG-SEOK (b.1945), a former Unification Church member, who teaches that he is the returned messiah completing the mission Jesus left unfinished.

What it worshipped and taught

Thirty Lessons doctrine derived from Moon's Divine Principle. Jung teaches that the Fall was sexual and that union with the messiah — himself — spiritually purifies women. Recruitment focused heavily on university campuses, on modelling and beauty-pageant circuits, and on sports clubs, using front organisations. Female members were ranked by appearance and presented to Jung as brides of Christ.

Who was in it

Jung Myung-seok; MAPLE, the pseudonymous Hong Kong woman whose 2018 complaint led to the second conviction; the Australian and Japanese victims; Kim Do-hyung, the exit counsellor; the K-Net anti-JMS network; the 2023 Netflix documentary In the Name of God: A Holy Betrayal.

How it ended, or where it stands

Leader imprisoned; the group continues to operate, reportedly with tens of thousands of members.

Of note

The clearest documented case of a sect built explicitly as a sexual-access mechanism, with recruitment optimised for the leader's stated physical preferences. Note the descent from the Unification Church (043).

Founder, Providence (Jesus Morning Star) · born 17 March 1945 · active 1980–present

A former Unification Church member who founded his own group in 1980, teaching that he is the returned messiah completing the mission Jesus left unfinished. His doctrine holds that the Fall was sexual and that union with the messiah spiritually purifies women. Recruitment targeted university campuses, modelling and beauty-pageant circuits and sports clubs through front organisations; female members were ranked by appearance. He fled Korea in 1999 as allegations mounted, spent four years on Interpol's wanted list, and has now been convicted twice, in 2008 and 2023, for offences against a total of six women across multiple countries.

Before the law. TWICE CONVICTED of sexual offences in South Korea. FIRST in 2008 — ten years, SERVED IN FULL UNTIL 2018. THE SECOND SET OF OFFENCES BEGAN IN FEBRUARY 2018, THE YEAR HE WALKED OUT. He was indicted over the rape or sexual assault of THREE FOLLOWERS — two foreign, one Korean — ON 23 SEPARATE OCCASIONS BETWEEN FEBRUARY 2018 AND SEPTEMBER 2021. A district court imposed 23 YEARS; an appellate court CUT IT TO 17, holding that the original term exceeded the sentencing guidelines; and THE SUPREME COURT FINALISED THE 17-YEAR TERM ON 9 JANUARY 2025. He must also wear an ELECTRONIC ANKLE MONITOR FOR FIFTEEN YEARS and is BARRED FOR TEN YEARS from working in any facility serving children, adolescents or disabled people.

Where things stand. Incarcerated in South Korea, serving the finalised 17-year term. Born 17 March 1945, he is 81; press coverage of the 2025 ruling gave ages of 79 and 80, reflecting different age-counting conventions. The group continues to operate, with a reported membership in the tens of thousands.
