Heaven's Gate

Human Individual Metamorphosis; Total Overcomers Anonymous

1974 – 26 March 1997 · Oregon, Texas, Colorado; finally Rancho Santa Fe, California

VIII. THE 1990s — THE MILLENNIUM APPROACHES

Fully religious — Christian-UFO synthesis

Who led it

MARSHALL HERFF APPLEWHITE (1931–1997), son of a Presbyterian minister and a former music professor dismissed for a relationship with a male student, and BONNIE LU NETTLES (1927–1985), a nurse and astrologer. They called themselves BO AND PEEP, then DO AND TI (from the musical scale).

What it worshipped and taught

THE EVOLUTIONARY LEVEL ABOVE HUMAN (TELAH). Doctrine: Earth is a garden; human bodies are VEHICLES or containers; the soul is a deposit that must be grown. Do and Ti were the Two Witnesses of Revelation 11, sent from the Next Level. To graduate, a member had to overcome all human attachments — family, sexuality, money, individuality — and eventually leave the vehicle behind. Practices: uniform buzz cuts and identical clothing for all members regardless of sex; new names all ending in -ody (Rkkody, Srrody, Jwnody, Chkody); total celibacy, which EIGHT OF THE EIGHTEEN MEN — INCLUDING APPLEWHITE — took as far as VOLUNTARY SURGICAL CASTRATION. The San Diego medical examiner found the incisions long healed; an early attempt by a former nurse nearly killed the patient, and the rest were done in hospitals. Early press reports gave varying numbers, and this file previously recorded the count as unresolved; the Check Partner system in which no member did anything alone; and a highly regimented schedule with tasks changed at intervals to prevent habit. The group supported itself running a professional web design business, HIGHER SOURCE.

Who was in it

Marshall Applewhite (Do); Bonnie Nettles (Ti); WAYNE COOKE, who died by the group's method on 6 May 1997, and CHUCK HUMPHREY (Rkkody), who survived that same attempt and died in February 1998; Nichelle Nichols' brother THOMAS NICHOLS, among the dead; Rio DiAngelo (Richard Ford), who left weeks before and received the videotapes and discovered the bodies; the astronomers Alan Hale and Thomas Bopp; the amateur Chuck Shramek, whose 1996 photograph of Hale-Bopp with an apparent companion object triggered the final phase.

How it ended, or where it stands

Total. The website is still run by TWO surviving former members through a registered legal entity, the TELAH FOUNDATION, set up specifically to hold the site, the book and the tapes after the group was gone.

The dead

39 in the main event; 3 more in the year that followed

Of note

Notable for the absence of coercion at the end. Members left on their own, some returned, none were restrained, and the videos show articulate adults describing a decision they had prepared for over twenty years. This makes it the hardest case for the brainwashing model and the most-argued case in the academic literature. The website, still online and UNCHANGED SINCE 1997, is the last artefact. It is maintained by MARC AND SARAH KING, who were members for twelve years and were entrusted with it before the exit. They hold ordinary full-time jobs, still receive a couple of dozen emails a day, and describe the task in the group's own terms: 'The Group left us to take care of the website, book and the tapes that they wanted to speak for them.' It is the only entry in this dossier whose primary source is still being answered by hand, thirty years on.

Its timeline

  1. 1972 Applewhite and Nettles meet, reportedly in a hospital.
  2. 1975 Public meeting at Waldport, Oregon, at which about 20 people abandon their lives on the spot to follow them — a story that made national news.
  3. 1976–1993 The group goes almost entirely underground for 17 years, moving constantly, camping, living on member funds. Membership fluctuates and stabilises around 40.
  4. 19 June 1985 Ti (Bonnie Nettles) dies of cancer. Applewhite reinterprets the doctrine: she has gone ahead to the Next Level without her vehicle, and a spacecraft will collect the rest.
  5. 1993 The group re-emerges, buying a full-page ad in USA Today headed UFO Cult Resurfaces with Final Offer.
  6. 1994–1996 Public meetings across the US; Higher Source begins taking web design contracts. Several members undergo castration.
  7. 14 NOVEMBER 1996 The amateur astronomer CHUCK SHRAMEK photographs COMET HALE-BOPP, sees what he takes for a companion object, and announces it on the ART BELL radio show. Applewhite identifies it as the Next Level spacecraft come to collect them. THE OBJECT WAS A BACKGROUND STAR, SAO 141894, an 8.5-magnitude star his star-chart software failed to show because it was set up wrongly, distorted further by his telescope. Alan Hale, the comet's co-discoverer, said so at the time.
  8. OCTOBER 1996 The group rents a 9,200 sq ft mansion at 18341 Colina Norte, Rancho Santa Fe, for 7,000 dollars a month. Members record farewell videotapes — calm, articulate, and visibly happy.
  9. 22–26 MARCH 1997 THE EXIT. Over three days in three groups, 39 PEOPLE (21 women, 18 men, aged 26 to 72) take phenobarbital mixed into applesauce or pudding, wash it down with vodka, and secure plastic bags over their heads. Each wears identical black shirts, black Nike Decade trainers, and an armband reading HEAVEN'S GATE AWAY TEAM. Each has a five-dollar bill and three quarters in a pocket. The last two are laid out by the second-to-last group. Applewhite is among the third group.
  10. 26 March 1997 Rio DiAngelo, alerted by a package of videotapes, enters the house and calls police.
  11. 6 MAY 1997 WAYNE COOKE dies by the same method in a hotel room; CHUCK HUMPHREY survives the attempt.
  12. 11 MAY 1997 JAMES PIRKEY JR. shoots himself.
  13. FEBRUARY 1998 Humphrey kills himself in Arizona, with 5.75 dollars in his pocket — the same sum the 39 carried.

Its people

Marshall Herff Applewhite

Do; Bo

Co-founder, Heaven's Gate · 17 May 1931 – 26 March 1997 · active 1972–1997

Son of a Presbyterian minister, a music professor dismissed from the University of St Thomas over a relationship with a male student. He met the nurse Bonnie Nettles in 1972 and together they concluded they were the Two Witnesses of Revelation 11, sent from the Evolutionary Level Above Human. They took the group underground for 17 years. After Nettles died of cancer in 1985 he reinterpreted her death as her going ahead without her vehicle. He was one of eight men in the group, of eighteen, who underwent voluntary surgical castration to enforce its total celibacy. From late 1996 he identified a supposed companion object behind Comet Hale-Bopp — in fact a background star — as the pickup craft.

Before the law. Served six months in 1974 for failing to return a rental car. Otherwise nothing.

Where things stand. Deceased 26 March 1997. 39 people died, including him.

Bonnie Lu Nettles

Ti; Peep

Co-founder, Heaven's Gate · 29 August 1927 – 19 June 1985 · active 1972–1985

A registered nurse, astrologer and Theosophy student who met Applewhite in 1972 and supplied the movement's cosmology — he was the persuader, she was the source. Together they concluded they were the Two Witnesses of Revelation 11. She was the senior partner in the pairing, and members described Applewhite deferring to her. Her death from cancer in 1985 was the group's central theological crisis: she had taught that members would ascend bodily. Applewhite resolved it by declaring she had gone ahead without her vehicle — the reinterpretation that made the 1997 exit thinkable.

Before the law. None.

Where things stand. Deceased 1985, twelve years before the group's end.

  1. 1972 Meets Applewhite.
  2. 1975 The Waldport, Oregon meeting.
  3. 1976–85 The group lives underground; she is the doctrinal authority.
  4. 19 JUNE 1985 Dies of cancer. Applewhite reinterprets the doctrine; bodily ascension becomes departure from the vehicle.

Rio DiAngelo

Richard Ford

Heaven's Gate member who left weeks before the exit · born 1957 · active 1994–1997

A member who left Heaven's Gate weeks before the deaths — at the group's own suggestion, so that someone would remain to tell the story. In March 1997 he received a package of videotapes in the post, drove to Rancho Santa Fe with a colleague, entered the house, filmed briefly, and called police. He is the only person who saw the scene before the authorities did. He has spoken about it rarely and has never repudiated the group's beliefs, which makes his testimony unusually difficult and unusually honest.

Before the law. Never charged.

Where things stand. Living — confirmed to 2024. His name outside the group is RICHARD FORD; he worked as a computer designer and is now a retired art director, reunited with his mother and spending time with his granddaughter. THE PART THAT MATTERS FOR THIS DOSSIER, AND THAT THIS FILE OMITTED: HE STILL BELIEVES. Nearly three decades after leaving days before the deaths and then discovering the bodies, he continues to advocate for the group’s teachings and remains in contact with the people who still maintain its websites. The sole survivor of the exit did not lose the faith — he simply did not go.

  1. 1994 Joins Heaven's Gate.
  2. February 1997 Leaves at the group's suggestion, to survive and tell the story.
  3. 26 MARCH 1997 Receives the videotapes, drives to the house, discovers the 39 bodies and calls police.
  4. 1997–present Speaks publicly only occasionally; has not renounced the group's beliefs.
