What it worshipped and taught
A synthesis of Tibetan Vajrayana Buddhism, Hindu Shaivism (Shiva as principal deity), Christian apocalyptic and the prophecies of Nostradamus. Doctrine: Armageddon was coming — a nuclear third world war between Japan and the United States — and only Aum initiates would survive to form the new civilisation. Crucially, Asahara taught PHOWA, a distorted version of the Tibetan consciousness-transference practice, holding that killing a person with bad karma at the right moment actually BENEFITS them and generates merit for the killer. This is the doctrinal mechanism that made mass murder a religious act. Initiation practices: drinking Asahara's bathwater and blood (sold at high prices), the PSI (Perfect Salvation Initiation) electrode headset, extreme heat and cold austerities, sensory deprivation, forced LSD and methamphetamine use, and confinement in isolation cells. MEMBERSHIP, PER THE 1995 US SENATE PERMANENT SUBCOMMITTEE ON INVESTIGATIONS REPORT: the cult CLAIMED as many as 65,000, the majority in Russia. Officials and Aum specialists interviewed for that report placed worldwide membership at 40,000 TO 60,000. Japanese membership is put at 9,000–10,000, with ROUGHLY 1,000 HARDCORE ADHERENTS living inside cult properties; Russian prosecutors later assessed up to 30,000 followers in Russia. THE JAPANESE GOVERNMENT NEVER PUBLICLY CORROBORATED ANY OF THESE FIGURES.
Its people
Shoko Asahara
Chizuo Matsumoto
Founder, Aum Shinrikyo · 2 March 1955 – 6 July 2018 · active 1984–1995
Partially blind from birth, a failed acupuncturist convicted of selling fake medicine in 1982. He founded a yoga school in 1984 and transformed it into an apocalyptic sect that recruited graduates of Japan's best universities — physicists, doctors, engineers. He taught a distorted version of the Tibetan practice of phowa, holding that killing a person with bad karma actually benefits them, which converted mass murder into a religious act. Members drank his bathwater and blood, sold at high prices. After his party's humiliating electoral defeat in 1990 he turned to weapons of mass destruction, and in 1995 became the first non-state actor in history to deploy a military nerve agent against a civilian population.
Before the law. CONVICTED of 13 counts including multiple murder; sentenced to death 24 February 2004; appeals exhausted 2006. Executed with 12 senior members in July 2018.
Where things stand. Executed 2018. Successor groups Aleph and Hikari no Wa remain under permanent Japanese state surveillance.

Hideo Murai
Minister of Science and Technology
Head of Aum's weapons programme · 5 December 1958 – 24 April 1995 · active 1987–1995
An astrophysicist from Osaka University who had worked at Kobe Steel before joining Aum, and the man who ran its chemical and biological weapons programmes. He directed the construction of Satian 7, the sarin production plant capable of making enough nerve agent to kill millions. He is the clearest single refutation of the idea that education protects against recruitment. He was stabbed to death in front of dozens of reporters and television cameras outside Aum's Tokyo headquarters, weeks after the subway attack — the assassin was linked to a yakuza group, and the killing has never been fully explained.
Before the law. Murdered before he could be tried. His killer, Hiroyuki Jo, served a sentence for the killing.
Where things stand. Deceased 1995. His death removed the single best witness to Aum's weapons programme.
- 1987 Joins Aum, abandoning a research career.
- 1993–95 Directs the Satian 7 sarin plant and the biological weapons work.
- 20 March 1995 The Tokyo subway attack.
- 24 APRIL 1995 Stabbed to death on camera outside Aum's Tokyo headquarters before he could be fully interrogated.

Minister of Health and Welfare
Head of Aum's biological weapons programme · 5 June 1960 – 6 July 2018 · active 1987–1995
A graduate researcher in genetic engineering at Kyoto University's Viral Research Centre who ran Aum's biological weapons work — the botulinum toxin attempts and the 1993 anthrax release from a Tokyo rooftop, which failed because the strain used was a harmless veterinary vaccine strain. He also helped produce the sarin used at Matsumoto and in the subway. Executed in July 2018.
Before the law. CONVICTED of murder; sentenced to death 1998; executed 2018.
Where things stand. EXECUTED BY HANGING ON 6 JULY 2018 AT THE TOKYO DETENTION HOUSE, aged 58, with SHOKO ASAHARA and five other members; six more were hanged on 26 July. RE-CHECKED 2026-09-07. He produced the sarin on Asahara's instruction. THIS IS A DOCUMENTARY CLAIM AND IT WILL NOT CHANGE — the audit's own measurement was that judgments and executions do not decay, which is why this file is stamped once and left alone.
- 1987 Joins Aum from Kyoto University.
- 1990–93 Botulinum and anthrax attempts, all unsuccessful.
- 1994–95 Assists sarin production for Matsumoto and the subway attack.

Aum's arms buyer and fixer, who travelled repeatedly to Russia and acquired an Mi-17 military helicopter, negotiated for weapons technology, and kept the notebooks — recovered by police — recording attempts to obtain nuclear material. Fumihiro Joyu
—
Spokesman, Aum Shinrikyo; founder, Hikari no Wa · born 17 December 1962 · active 1986–present
An artificial intelligence graduate of Waseda University who worked at Japan's national space agency before joining Aum. As spokesman he became a media figure in his own right during 1995, defending the group on television with a fluency that unsettled the country. He was in Russia during the subway attack and was convicted only of perjury and document offences, serving three years. He later renounced Asahara and split off to found Hikari no Wa, which presents itself as a reformed philosophical group without a guru — and which remains under Japanese state surveillance regardless.
Before the law. CONVICTED of perjury and document falsification, not of the attacks. Served three years.
Where things stand. Living, and still leading HIKARI NO WA, which he founded in 2007 as a splinter EXPLICITLY REJECTING ASAHARA’S INFLUENCE. A CORRECTION ON THE SURVEILLANCE: this file said the group was under PERMANENT state surveillance. IT WAS NOT CONTINUOUS. Monitoring was DISCONTINUED IN 2017 after a successful legal challenge, and RESTORED ON 28 FEBRUARY 2019 when the TOKYO HIGH COURT allowed a further extension, reversing that decision. The PUBLIC SECURITY INTELLIGENCE AGENCY keeps the group under general monitoring as an Aum successor entity, citing continued reverence for Asahara — his image displayed in its facilities, seminars built on his doctrines. IN MARCH 2025 JUSTICE MINISTER KEISUKE SUZUKI NAMED HIKARI NO WA, ALONGSIDE ALEPH AND YAMADA-RA NO SHUDAN, AS OPERATING UNDER ASAHARA’S ‘ABSOLUTE INFLUENCE’, warning of risks of indiscriminate mass murder and of covert recruitment of young people who are not told what they are joining. Note the shape of that: Joyu founded the group to escape Asahara, and the Japanese state says it is still his.
- 1986 Joins Aum from the national space agency.
- 1995 Becomes the group's televised public face.
- 1995 Convicted of perjury and falsifying documents; serves three years.
- 1999–2007 Leads the successor group Aleph.
- 2007 Splits off to found Hikari no Wa, publicly renouncing Asahara.

The Sakamoto family
Tsutsumi, Satoko and Tatsuhiko Sakamoto
Murdered by Aum Shinrikyo · killed 4 November 1989 · active 1989
Tsutsumi Sakamoto was a 33-year-old Yokohama lawyer organising families of Aum members and preparing a lawsuit against the group. Days before, Aum had obtained a recording of him from a television company that had shown it to them before broadcast. Members entered his flat at night and killed him, his 29-year-old wife Satoko and their 14-month-old son Tatsuhiko, then buried the three bodies in three separate prefectures. Police did not seriously pursue Aum. The case went unsolved for nearly six years — and in that time Aum built a nerve agent programme and killed 21 more people.
Before the law. Several Aum members, including Kiyohide Hayakawa, were convicted and executed for these killings in 2018.
Where things stand. All three deceased 1989. Their deaths are the clearest 'what if' in the entire dossier.
- 1989 Tsutsumi Sakamoto organises families of Aum members and prepares litigation.
- October 1989 A television company shows Aum an unbroadcast interview with him.
- 4 NOVEMBER 1989 All three are killed at their home in Yokohama; the bodies are buried in three separate prefectures.
- 1989–95 The case remains unsolved; police do not pursue Aum.
- 1995 After the subway attack, Aum members confess and the bodies are recovered.

Kazumasa Takahashi
—
Tokyo subway station attendant killed in the sarin attack · 1944 – 20 March 1995 · active 1995
A 50-year-old assistant stationmaster at Kasumigaseki station with 30 years' service, due to retire shortly. When passengers reported liquid on a train floor, he and a colleague went to clear it — mopping up the sarin with newspaper and their bare hands, without protective equipment, because nobody yet knew what it was. He collapsed on the platform and died. His colleague Tsuneo Hishinuma also died. Their deaths are recorded here because the attack's two most certain fatalities were not targets at all; they were railway staff doing their job.
Before the law. His killers were convicted and executed in July 2018.
Where things stand. Deceased 1995, aged 50. His widow Shizue Takahashi became a prominent advocate for victims of the attack and campaigned for state compensation.
- 20 MARCH 1995 Clears liquid sarin from a train floor at Kasumigaseki station with newspaper and bare hands. Collapses on the platform.
- 20 March 1995 Dies. His colleague Tsuneo Hishinuma dies two days later.
