Church Universal and Triumphant

CUT; Summit Lighthouse

1958 – present · Washington DC; Malibu; Corwin Springs, Montana (Royal Teton Ranch)

VII. THE 1980s — SIEGE AND SCANDAL

Fully religious — Ascended Master movement

Who led it

MARK L. PROPHET (1918–1973), a former I AM student, and after his death his wife ELIZABETH CLARE PROPHET (1939–2009), known as GURU MA. Both claimed to be Messengers for the Great White Brotherhood.

What it worshipped and taught

The Ascended Masters — Saint Germain, El Morya, Kuthumi, Jesus (called Sanat Kumara's line), and the Prophets' own past selves. Practice: DECREES, rapid-fire chanted affirmations delivered at accelerating speed for hours, directing the VIOLET FLAME. Elizabeth Prophet dictated messages from the Masters live before audiences. Doctrine included past lives (she identified herself as Marie Antoinette, Guinevere and Martha of Bethany, and Mark Prophet as Lancelot, Longfellow and Origen), and, decisively, an expectation of imminent nuclear war with the Soviet Union.

Who was in it

Mark Prophet; Elizabeth Clare Prophet; Edward Francis, her fourth husband; Erin Prophet, her daughter, whose memoir Prophet's Daughter (2009) is the key insider account; Vernon Hamilton; the arms dealers involved in the 1989 weapons purchase.

How it ended, or where it stands

SURVIVES AND STILL FUNCTIONS — this file previously said only that it was small and that the ranch had largely been sold to conservation buyers. Both are true, but the core of the ROYAL TETON RANCH remains the movement’s home and it runs a regular retreat and teaching programme. Authority rests in a two-person presidency, a Board of Directors and a Council of Elders. THE MESSENGER ROLE WAS SIMPLY NOT FILLED.

Of note

Shelter Night is the cleanest modern example of a costly failed prophecy — no violence, but the financial destruction of thousands of families. Note the descent line: Blavatsky (031) → Ballard's I AM (037) → CUT.

Its timeline

  1. 1958 Mark Prophet founds Summit Lighthouse in Washington DC.
  2. 1961 Elizabeth Wulf meets Mark; marries him in 1963.
  3. 26 February 1973 Mark Prophet dies of a stroke; Elizabeth assumes sole messengership and declares him ascended as the master Lanello.
  4. 1975 Elizabeth Prophet reorganises the movement as the CHURCH UNIVERSAL AND TRIUMPHANT.
  5. 1981 The church begins buying land on the northern border of Yellowstone National Park, and by the late 1980s holds MORE THAN 24,000 ACRES as the ROYAL TETON RANCH.
  6. 1986–1989 Members are instructed to prepare for nuclear war. The church builds an enormous network of fallout shelters, including one 756-person bunker, stocked for seven years, with 30,000-gallon fuel tanks.
  7. July 1989 VERNON HAMILTON is arrested attempting to buy weapons and ammunition under a false name for the shelters. EDWARD FRANCIS, the church's vice-president and Prophet's husband, admitted his part and served a short sentence. The church is deeply embarrassed.
  8. 15 MARCH 1990 THE SHELTER NIGHT. On Elizabeth Prophet's astrological prediction, members enter the bunkers to await nuclear war, having sold homes and businesses — Wikipedia puts the number at around 7,000. Nothing happens, and ABOUT A THIRD OF THE MEMBERSHIP BREAKS WITH THE CHURCH.
  9. 1990 A fuel tank ruptures near the Yellowstone boundary, releasing thousands of gallons of diesel and fuel oil — an environmental scandal that turns Montana against them.
  10. 1997–1999 Elizabeth Prophet is diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease in 1997, curtails her activity and RETIRES IN 1999. She dies on 15 October 2009.
  11. OCTOBER 2001 KATE GORDON AND LOIS DRAKE TAKE A JOINT PRESIDENCY — eight years before Elizabeth Prophet’s death. NO SUCCESSOR MESSENGER WAS NAMED; the church is run by a two-person presidency with a Board of Directors and a Council of Elders.
  12. 2024–2026 STILL OPERATING. Quarterly retreats continue at the ROYAL TETON RANCH in Paradise Valley, Montana, north of Yellowstone, along with Summit University sessions and retreats for teenagers and young adults. THE SUMMIT LIGHTHOUSE continues as the publishing arm.

Its people

Elizabeth Clare Prophet

Guru Ma; Elizabeth Wulf

Leader, Church Universal and Triumphant · 8 April 1939 – 15 October 2009 · active 1973–1998

Took sole leadership after her husband Mark Prophet's death in 1973 and delivered live 'dictations' from the Ascended Masters before audiences. She identified her own past lives as Marie Antoinette, Guinevere and Martha of Bethany. From 1986 she directed members to prepare for nuclear war, building an enormous fallout shelter network on the church's ranch bordering Yellowstone. On 15 March 1990 roughly 2,000 members — many of whom had sold homes and businesses — entered the bunkers to wait. Nothing happened. She was later diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease and stepped down in 1998.

Before the law. Never charged. Her husband served a month for the weapons purchase.

Where things stand. Deceased 2009. The church survives much reduced; the ranch was largely sold to conservation buyers.

  1. 1973 Assumes sole messengership on Mark Prophet's death.
  2. 1981 Begins buying the Royal Teton Ranch land, which exceeds 24,000 acres by the late 1980s.
  3. July 1989 Vernon Hamilton is arrested buying weapons under a false names for the shelters.
  4. 15 MARCH 1990 Shelter Night — ~2,000 members enter the bunkers; nothing occurs.
  5. 1998 Steps down with Alzheimer's.
  6. 15 October 2009 Dies.

Edward Francis

—

Business manager and fourth husband of Elizabeth Clare Prophet, CUT · born 1943 · active 1981–1998

Ran the church's commercial operations during the shelter-building period. In July 1989 he and Vernon Hamilton were arrested attempting to buy semi-automatic rifles and ammunition under false names, for stockpiling in the bunkers being prepared for the nuclear war Elizabeth Prophet had predicted. The arrest was deeply damaging: it turned Montana public opinion against the church and made the 1990 Shelter Night a national story.

Before the law. CONVICTED of falsifying firearms purchase records, 1990. Served about a month.

Where things stand. THIS FILE CANNOT CONFIRM HIS PRESENT STATUS AND PREVIOUSLY ASSERTED ONE. It read simply 'Living'. He would be 83. NO SOURCE CONSULTED CARRIES ANY REPORT OF HIM SINCE THE 1990s. What is documented: he was married to ELIZABETH CLARE PROPHET for fifteen years, and the marriage ended in a divorce granted by DISTRICT JUDGE DOUGLAS HARKIN in Montana, filed in 1996 and decreed in April 1997. Prophet herself died on 15 October 2009. No death record was found for him either — the position is simply unknown.

  1. 1981 Marries Elizabeth Clare Prophet.
  2. July 1989 Vernon Hamilton is arrested buying weapons under a false name for the church's fallout shelters; Francis admitted his own part.
  3. 1990 Serves a month in jail; the church pays a substantial fine.
  4. 15 March 1990 Shelter Night — ~2,000 members enter the bunkers; nothing occurs.
