What it worshipped and taught
Krishna as the supreme personality of Godhead. Practices: chanting the maha-mantra 1,728 times daily on japa beads, vegetarianism, no intoxicants, no gambling, no illicit sex, 4 a.m. rising, and book distribution (sankirtana). Theologically this is genuine, centuries-old Vaishnava Hinduism, which is why ISKCON is not a cult in the doctrinal sense at all.
Who was in it
Prabhupada; the eleven successor gurus of 1977; KIRTANANANDA SWAMI (Keith Ham), founder of New Vrindaban; Hansadutta; Jayatirtha, murdered in 1987; Bhavananda; Ramesvara; THOMAS DRESCHER (Tirtha), the enforcer; STEVEN BRYANT (Sulochana), the dissident murdered in 1986; Charles St Denis; the survivors of the gurukula schools, whose 2000 lawsuit is the central legal event; the Bhaktivedanta Book Trust.
Its people
A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada
Abhay Charan De; Srila Prabhupada
Founder, ISKCON · 1 September 1896 – 14 November 1977 · active 1966–1977
Arrived in New York in 1965 aged 69 with seven dollars and founded ISKCON the following year. Unlike almost everyone else in this dossier, he taught an orthodox, centuries-old tradition — Gaudiya Vaishnavism — rather than an invented one, and translated an enormous body of Sanskrit scripture. His catastrophic error was structural rather than doctrinal: on his death he left an eleven-guru succession that handed absolute guru status to young Western converts, producing the New Vrindaban murders, the racketeering convictions and the gurukula abuse crisis.
Before the law. None.
Where things stand. Deceased 1977. ISKCON survives worldwide and has publicly acknowledged and settled its abuse history.

Kirtanananda Swami
Keith Ham; Bhaktipada
Founder, New Vrindaban · 6 September 1937 – 24 October 2011 · active 1968–1994
One of Prabhupada's earliest American disciples and one of the eleven successor gurus. He built New Vrindaban in West Virginia into a lavish complex with the Palace of Gold, funded by illegal fundraising, drug dealing and unlicensed merchandise. When the dissident Steven Bryant prepared to publish an exposé, Bryant was murdered in Los Angeles by Kirtanananda's enforcer Thomas Drescher. Kirtanananda was expelled from ISKCON in 1987 and the whole community expelled in 1988.
Before the law. CONVICTED of racketeering; ultimately pleaded guilty in 1996 and served eight years. Never convicted of the murder itself.

Thomas Drescher
Tirtha
Enforcer, New Vrindaban · born c.1950 · active 1980s
Kirtanananda's enforcer at the New Vrindaban community. In May 1986 he shot Steven Bryant — the dissident who was about to publish The Guru Business, exposing Kirtanananda — in Los Angeles. He had already killed another member, Charles St Denis, in 1983. His convictions are the hard evidence at the centre of the New Vrindaban collapse, and the reason ISKCON expelled the entire community.
Before the law. CONVICTED OF TWO MURDERS, and serving LIFE WITHOUT THE POSSIBILITY OF PAROLE for the 1986 killing of Steven Bryant (Sulochana Das), whom he shot twice in the head in LOS ANGELES. That term runs CONSECUTIVELY with a life sentence he was ALREADY SERVING IN WEST VIRGINIA for a separate murder. THE DETAIL THAT MATTERS FOR THIS DOSSIER: DRESCHER TESTIFIED THAT HE CARRIED OUT THE ASSASSINATION AT THE WISH OF HIS SPIRITUAL LEADER, KIRTANANANDA SWAMI BHAKTIPADA (Keith Ham) — see L049. He is known in the movement as TIRTHA DAS.

He knew he was in danger and said so publicly. He was shot dead in his van in Los Angeles by Kirtanananda's enforcer Thomas Drescher.
