VI. THE 1970s — THE GREAT PROLIFERATION

Originally religious; now presents as a secular self-help teaching

Who led it

Founded by Hans Ji Maharaj; on his death in 1966 succeeded by his eight-year-old son PREM PAL SINGH RAWAT, titled GURU MAHARAJ JI and Balyogeshwar, the Perfect Master — an eight-year-old presented to Western followers as Lord of the Universe.

What it worshipped and taught

THE KNOWLEDGE — four secret meditation techniques (Light, Music, Nectar and Word) revealed by the Perfect Master alone, involving pressing the eyeballs, plugging the ears, curling the tongue back, and attention to the breath. Followers (premies) performed darshan, kissing the guru's feet, and satsang. Rawat was regarded by many Western followers as an incarnation of God, a claim he neither clearly asserted nor clearly denied in the period.

Who was in it

Prem Rawat; his mother Mata Ji, who denounced him in 1975; his elder brother Satpal Maharaj, installed as rival; Marolyn Johnson (Durga Ji), the airline stewardess he married in 1974, provoking the family split; Bob Mishler, the DLM president who defected in 1977 and gave a damaging radio interview; Rennie Davis, the Chicago Seven defendant who became a spokesman; Sophia Collier, whose memoir Soul Rush (1978) is a key account.

How it ended, or where it stands

TRANSFORMED RATHER THAN COLLAPSED, and still operating in wholly secular form through THE PREM RAWAT FOUNDATION and WORDS OF PEACE. Rawat, 68, still speaks worldwide. The divine claims of the Guru Maharaj Ji years have been dropped, not defended — which is why this entry sits in the dossier as a transformation rather than a scandal.

The dead

—

Of note

A rare and instructive case of successful de-religionisation. The current organisation disputes characterisations of its 1970s form. The Millennium 73 flop is one of the best-documented instances of a prophecy that simply deflated rather than failing dramatically.

Its timeline

  1. 1966 Hans Ji Maharaj dies; the eight-year-old Prem Rawat is proclaimed successor.
  2. 1971 Rawat arrives in Britain aged 13, then the United States; explosive Western growth.
  3. 8–10 NOVEMBER 1973 MILLENNIUM 73 at the Houston Astrodome — billed as the most significant event in human history, with predictions that flying saucers might appear and that a thousand years of peace would begin. Attendance was perhaps 20,000 in a 66,000-seat stadium. The event lost around a million dollars and effectively ended the mass-movement phase.
  4. 1974 Rawat, aged 16, marries Marolyn Johnson; his mother strips him of his title and installs his brother Satpal. The movement splits permanently.
  5. 1977–1983 Indian religious trappings progressively dropped in the West; ashrams closed in 1983; the organisation renamed Elan Vital.
  6. 1980s–present Rebranded entirely as a secular peace-and-inner-fulfilment message; Rawat still tours and speaks.
  7. 2001–present THE VEHICLES ARE NOW THE PREM RAWAT FOUNDATION AND WORDS OF PEACE, not Elan Vital, which this file left as the endpoint. Rawat continues an extensive speaking schedule — he was in Boston on 16 MAY 2026, and on 2 MARCH 2025 an event of his set a GUINNESS WORLD RECORD for the largest audience at a multi-author book reading, reported at 133,234 people. NOTE THE SOURCING: the attendance and scale figures come from his own organisations.

Guru Maharaj Ji; Balyogeshwar; the Perfect Master

Leader, Divine Light Mission / Words of Peace Global · born 10 December 1957 · active 1966–present

Succeeded his father as Perfect Master at the age of eight and was presented to Western followers as the Lord of the Universe. Arrived in Britain aged 13 and drew a large Western following who received the Knowledge — four secret meditation techniques — and performed darshan by kissing his feet. Millennium '73 at the Houston Astrodome, billed as the most significant event in human history, drew perhaps 20,000 to a 66,000-seat stadium and lost around a million dollars. He married at 16, was stripped of his title by his own mother, and over the following decades systematically stripped the movement of its Indian religious trappings, rebranding entirely as a secular peace message.

Before the law. None.

Where things stand. LIVING, AGED 68 — confirmed August 2026, and travelling constantly. He spoke in BOSTON ON 16 MAY 2026, and on 2 MARCH 2025 set a GUINNESS WORLD RECORD for the largest audience at a multi-author book reading, put at 133,234 PEOPLE. He is described as keeping to some ninety speaking engagements a year, with talks translated into more than seventy-five languages, through THE PREM RAWAT FOUNDATION and WORDS OF PEACE. A SOURCING CAVEAT THIS FILE OWES THE READER: almost all of the activity figures above come from HIS OWN ORGANISATIONS’ WEBSITES — interested parties. That he is alive and actively speaking is well established; the scale claims are self-reported. His early Western followers were called PREMIES, from a Hindi word for lover.

  1. 1966 Proclaimed successor at age eight.
  2. 1971 Arrives in the West aged 13.
  3. 8–10 November 1973 Millennium '73 at the Astrodome — a costly flop.
  4. 1974 Marries Marolyn Johnson; his mother strips his title and installs his brother.
  5. 1983 Ashrams closed; Indian trappings dropped.
  6. 1980s–present Rebranded as a secular teacher; still touring.
