Synanon

The Synanon Church; Synanon Foundation

1958 – 1991 · Santa Monica, Marin County and Badger, California

V. THE POSTWAR ERA 1945–1969

Began secular; declared itself a religion in 1974/1980

Who led it

CHARLES E. DEDERICH SR. (1913–1997), a recovering alcoholic and former Gulf Oil executive, known as Chuck. Enforcers: the IMPERIAL MARINES, an internal security force.

What it worshipped and taught

Initially nothing — Synanon was the first therapeutic community for heroin addiction and was genuinely pioneering. Its core technique was THE GAME, a leaderless attack-therapy circle in which participants verbally assaulted each other's defences for hours. It worked well enough that the technique spread worldwide into drug rehabilitation, prisons and corporate training, and became the ancestor of the encounter group and the LGAT. As Dederich's power grew, Synanon turned inward: shaved heads for all members, compulsory vasectomies for men and abortions for pregnant women, and in 1977 the CHANGING PARTNERS decree in which Dederich ordered roughly 230 married couples to divorce and pair with new partners assigned by the organisation. Dederich, who had been sober for decades, resumed drinking.

Who was in it

Charles Dederich; his wife Betty Dederich, who died in 1977, after which his behaviour deteriorated sharply; Paul Morantz, the attorney; Lance Kenton, son of the bandleader Stan Kenton; Joe Musico; the journalists Dave Mitchell and Cathy Mitchell of the Point Reyes Light, who won the 1979 Pulitzer Prize for Public Service for exposing it.

How it ended, or where it stands

Destroyed by criminal prosecution and loss of tax status.

The dead

At least two deaths attributed to internal violence and neglect; Morantz survived. ON SIZE, THE TWO FIGURES IN CIRCULATION MEASURE DIFFERENT THINGS AND SHOULD NOT BE CONFLATED. RESIDENT MEMBERSHIP PEAKED AT ALMOST 1,700 IN 1972, up from about 1,000 in 1968. THE FIGURE OF MORE THAN 10,000, reached by the early 1970s across FOURTEEN FACILITIES, COUNTS NON-RESIDENT MEMBERS TOO — the LIFESTYLER category created in 1968 for people who took part without moving in. Roughly six non-residents for every resident. The distinction matters for the same reason it matters in the Scientology entry (044): a movement's claimed size and its committed core are different quantities, and groups quote whichever is larger

Of note

The most important entry for understanding the therapy-cult category. Attack therapy, sleep deprivation in marathon sessions, and the abolition of the exit are all Synanon inventions, and they were absorbed into est, Lifespring, Landmark, NXIVM and dozens of teen behaviour-modification programmes.

Its timeline

  1. 1958 Founded in Santa Monica as a two-year addiction programme.
  2. 1960s National acclaim; celebrity supporters; the Game exported widely.

  4. 1974 Declares itself a religion, largely for tax purposes.
  5. 1976–1977 Forced vasectomies and abortions; the Changing Partners decree.
  6. 10 OCTOBER 1978 Attorney PAUL MORANTZ, who had won a large judgment against Synanon, reaches into his mailbox in Pacific Palisades and is bitten by a 4½-foot RATTLESNAKE with its rattle removed, placed there by Lance Kenton and Joe Musico. He survives after a long hospitalisation.
  7. 1978 Police recover a Dederich tape recording: We're not going to mess with the old-time, turn-the-other-cheek religious postures. Our religious posture is: Don't mess with us.
  8. 1980 Dederich pleads no contest to conspiracy to commit murder; receives probation and a fine, and is barred from leading Synanon.
  9. 1991 IRS revokes tax exemption for destroying evidence and for the assault; Synanon dissolves in 1991.
  10. 28 February 1997 Dederich dies.

Chuck

Founder, Synanon · 22 March 1913 – 28 February 1997 · active 1958–1980

A recovering alcoholic and former Gulf Oil executive who founded the first therapeutic community for heroin addiction and genuinely pioneered the field — his invention, the Game, an attack-therapy circle, spread worldwide into rehab, prisons and corporate training, and is the direct ancestor of the encounter group and the LGAT. Then he abolished graduation, telling members they could never leave; ordered shaved heads, forced vasectomies and abortions; and in 1977 decreed that some 230 married couples divorce and re-pair with assigned partners. After his wife's death in 1977 he resumed drinking after decades sober. In 1978 members he directed put a de-rattled rattlesnake in a critic's mailbox.

Lance Kenton

—

Imperial Marine, Synanon · born 1957 · active 1970s–1980

Son of the bandleader Stan Kenton, and one of the two Synanon members who placed a four-and-a-half-foot rattlesnake with its rattle removed into the mailbox of the attorney Paul Morantz, who had won a large judgment against the organisation. Morantz was bitten, hospitalised for days and nearly died. The attack destroyed Synanon: it produced the tape recording of Dederich's 'don't mess with us' declaration, the conspiracy prosecution, and eventually the loss of tax exemption.

Before the law. PLEADED NO CONTEST to conspiracy to commit murder, 1980.

Where things stand. THIS FILE CANNOT CONFIRM HIS PRESENT STATUS; it previously said he had 'since worked outside public life', which nothing consulted establishes. No death record was found. Nothing reports on him after the early 1980s. ON THE SENTENCE, THE RECORD IS NOT CLEAN AND THIS FILE WILL NOT TIDY IT: he and his co-defendant JOSEPH MUSICO PLEADED NO CONTEST, and contemporary accounts differ — some report a term of about a year’s imprisonment, while UPI reported PROBATION SENTENCES in November 1980. The disposition is recorded here as disputed rather than resolved.

  1. 10 October 1978 With Joe Musico, places the de-rattled rattlesnake in Paul Morantz's mailbox.
  2. 1980 Pleads no contest to conspiracy to commit murder alongside Dederich.
  3. 1980 Sentenced; serves a year.

Paul Morantz

—

Attorney who survived Synanon's rattlesnake attack · 1945 – 23 October 2022 · active 1977–2022

A Los Angeles lawyer and former journalist who built a career suing coercive organisations — he had won a judgment against Synanon for holding a woman against her will. On 10 October 1978 he reached into his mailbox in Pacific Palisades and was bitten by a four-and-a-half-foot rattlesnake with its rattles removed so it would strike without warning. A neighbour applied a tourniquet and called paramedics, saving his life. He recovered and spent the next four decades litigating against high-control groups, including Scientology, and writing about them. He died in 2022 aged 77.

Before the law. The attack produced Charles Dederich's conviction and ultimately the destruction of Synanon.

Where things stand. Deceased 2022, aged 77.

  1. 1977 Wins a judgment against Synanon on behalf of a woman held against her will.
  2. 10 OCTOBER 1978 Bitten by a de-rattled rattlesnake placed in his mailbox by Synanon members. A neighbour's tourniquet saves his life.

Dave and Cathy Mitchell

—

Editors of the Point Reyes Light; Pulitzer Prize for exposing Synanon · Dave 1943–2016; Cathy b. 1940s · active 1977–1980

Husband-and-wife owners of the Point Reyes Light, a California weekly with a circulation of about 2,700, who spent years investigating Synanon while larger papers stayed away — Synanon was famously litigious and had sued or threatened most of the California press. Their reporting documented the violence, the forced vasectomies and the partner-swapping decree. In 1979 they won the PULITZER PRIZE FOR PUBLIC SERVICE, one of the smallest papers ever to do so. Their work directly enabled the prosecutions that followed the rattlesnake attack.
