V. THE POSTWAR ERA 1945–1969

Fully religious — UFO religion

Who led it

ERNEST L. NORMAN (1904–1971), a spiritualist medium, and his wife RUTH NORMAN (1900–1993), who after his death styled herself URIEL — Universal Radiant Infinite Eternal Light — and appeared publicly in enormous sequinned gowns, tiaras and capes.

What it worshipped and taught

The Unarius Brotherhood, a confederation of 33 advanced worlds. Past-life therapy is the central practice: members psychodramatically re-enact previous incarnations on video to clear negative karma, producing thousands of hours of homemade costume films. Ruth Norman identified her own past lives as, among others, Confucius, the Buddha, Peter the Great, Socrates, Queen Elizabeth I, Benjamin Franklin and Mary of Bethany. The central prophecy: a fleet of 33 starships from the Pleiades would land, stacked one atop another, on a plot of land in Jamul, California, which the group purchased for the purpose.

Who was in it

Ernest Norman; Ruth Norman (Uriel); Charles Spaegel (Antares), her successor; the archangel Michiel.

How it ended, or where it stands

ACTIVE, TINY AND ENTIRELY HARMLESS — and unlike 045 this one could be checked. CONFIRMED TO JULY 2026: the Academy is open to visitors at 145 SOUTH MAGNOLIA AVENUE, EL CAJON, CALIFORNIA, on Saturday afternoons and by appointment on weekdays, and runs weekly past-life therapy classes on Sunday and Wednesday evenings, live-streamed. Founded 1954 in Los Angeles. THE DATE IS PART OF THE CLAIM; a bare ACTIVE is a claim about a moment that has already passed.

The dead

Of note

The most-documented case of serial prophecy failure with no violence and no collapse — the group simply revised the date each time. A useful control case against groups where failed prophecy turned lethal.

Its timeline

  1. 1954 Founded in Los Angeles by the Normans.
  2. 1971 Ernest Norman dies; Ruth takes over and the movement becomes flamboyantly public.
  3. 1974 Land purchased at Jamul for the space fleet's arrival.
  4. 1974 Landing predicted for 1975. Postponed.
  5. 1976, 1978, 1982, 1996, 2001 Successive predicted landing dates, each rescheduled after passing without event.
  6. 1993 Ruth Norman dies aged 93; the movement continues under Charles Spaegel and then a board.

Uriel — Universal Radiant Infinite Eternal Light

Leader, Unarius Academy of Science · 1900 – 12 July 1993 · active 1971–1993

Took over after her husband Ernest's death and turned the group into something joyously theatrical, appearing in enormous sequinned gowns, tiaras and capes. She identified her own past lives as Confucius, the Buddha, Socrates, Queen Elizabeth I, Peter the Great and Benjamin Franklin. Members re-enacted their own past lives on video, producing thousands of hours of homemade costume films. She predicted a fleet of 33 starships would land on land the group bought in Jamul, California, in 1975 — then 1976, 1978, 1982, 1996 and 2001. Each date was simply rescheduled. Nobody was harmed.

Before the law. None.

Where things stand. Deceased 1993. The academy continues, tiny and harmless.

Ernest L. Norman

—

Co-founder, Unarius Academy of Science · 1904 – 1971 · active 1954–1971

A spiritualist medium who founded Unarius with his wife Ruth in 1954 and channelled the science of the Unarius Brotherhood — a confederation of 33 advanced worlds — through a series of books. Under him the group was sober and text-focused. It was only after his death, when Ruth reinvented herself as Uriel in sequinned gowns and tiaras, that Unarius became the flamboyant spectacle it is remembered as.

Before the law. None.

Where things stand. Deceased 1971.

  1. 1954 Founds Unarius with Ruth Norman in Los Angeles.
  2. 1954–71 Produces the channelled Unarius texts.
