II. MEDIEVAL — HERESY, DUALISM AND THE MILLENNIUM
Fully religious — lay penitential mass movement
Who led it
Leaderless in the strict sense; local Masters led 33-and-a-half-day processions (one day per year of Christ's life). The 1260 wave was inspired by RANIERO FASANI of Perugia and the prophecies of JOACHIM OF FIORE, who had dated the Age of the Spirit to 1260.
What it worshipped and taught
Christ's passion, re-enacted on the penitent's own body. Whipping with scourges tipped with iron studs, twice daily in public, to purchase remission of sin directly from God — bypassing priests entirely, which is why the church turned on them. Carried a Heavenly Letter allegedly delivered by an angel to Jerusalem.
Who was in it
Raniero Fasani; Joachim of Fiore, posthumous influence; Konrad Schmid, executed 1368; Pope Clement VI.
How it ended, or where it stands
Condemned and suppressed; leaders executed.
The dead
Thousands of Jewish victims of associated pogroms; unknown number of flagellants executed
Of note
The clearest medieval demonstration of how apocalyptic panic converts into scapegoat violence within months.
Its timeline
- 1260 First mass wave from Perugia, keyed to Joachim's date for the end of the age.
- 1348–1349 The Black Death triggers the largest wave. Groups of hundreds march from town to town.
- 1349 THE POGROMS — AND A CORRECTION THIS FILE OWES. Thousands of Jews were murdered or burned alive across the Rhineland and beyond, and flagellant bands were genuinely involved in anti-Jewish violence: Clement VI's own bull condemns them for SHEDDING THE BLOOD OF JEWS, which is contemporary testimony that they did. BUT THIS ENTRY PREVIOUSLY CALLED THEM 'A LEADING VECTOR' OF THE POGROMS, WHICH IS THE OLDER ASSUMPTION THAT RECENT RESEARCH HAS SPECIFICALLY OVERTURNED. Historians long supposed the flagellants arrived and massacred spontaneously. THE EVIDENCE NOW SHOWS THE HORDES GENERALLY APPEARED ONLY AFTER THE POGROMS HAD ALREADY HAPPENED. The Frankfurt massacre in particular is now understood as A CAREFULLY PLOTTED KILLING INVOLVING THE KING, THE NOBLES, THE CITY COUNCIL AND THE GUILDS — not a mob that got out of hand. NOTE WHICH DIRECTION THIS ERROR RUNS. Every other correction in this dossier's historical tier involves an official record blackening the group it destroyed. THIS ONE GOES THE OTHER WAY: blaming a wandering flagellant rabble for the 1349 pogroms QUIETLY EXCUSES THE PEOPLE WHO ACTUALLY ORGANISED THEM, who were the constituted authorities.
- 20 OCTOBER 1349 CLEMENT VI ISSUES THE BULL INTER SOLLICITUDINES FROM AVIGNON — CONFIRMED, name and date exact — condemning the flagellant movement as heretical and demonically inspired, and criticising it for SHEDDING THE BLOOD OF JEWS. Secular authorities begin executing leaders. WORTH RECORDING ALONGSIDE IT: across 1348–1349 Clement VI issued a series of bulls DEFENDING JEWS AGAINST THE WELL-POISONING ACCUSATION and against the roaming flagellant bands. On this one question the papacy was on the right side of the evidence and said so at the time.
- 1368 Konrad Schmid burned as a heretic at Nordhausen.
- 1417 Preaching campaign of Vincent Ferrer marks the last major flare.
