Montanism

THE NEW PROPHECY — what they called themselves. 'Montanism', 'the Phrygian Heresy' and 'Cataphrygians' are all their opponents' names for them

c.157 – 6th c. CE · Phrygia (Anatolia), North Africa, Rome

I. ANTIQUITY — THE MYSTERY CULTS

Fully religious — charismatic Christian sect

Who led it

MONTANUS, a convert and possibly a former priest of Cybele, with two prophetesses, PRISCILLA and MAXIMILLA, who prophesied in first-person divine speech: I am the Lord God Almighty dwelling in a man.

What it worshipped and taught

The Holy Spirit or Paraclete speaking directly and continuously through living prophets, superseding church authority. Imminent descent of the New Jerusalem onto the Phrygian villages of Pepuza and Tymion. Rigorous asceticism: no remarriage, extended fasts, and the active courting of martyrdom.

Who was in it

Montanus; Priscilla; Maximilla; the later prophetess Quintilla; TERTULLIAN of Carthage, the leading Latin theologian of his age, who joined about 207; opponents Apollinarius and Eusebius.

How it ended, or where it stands

Suppressed over four centuries. THE TRADITIONAL ENDING — mass self-immolation at Pepuza in 550 — comes from a single contested source; see the timeline.

The dead

Unknown. Death by fire is reported at the end BY PROCOPIUS ALONE, in the Secret History

Of note

Sets the enduring pattern: living revelation outranking scripture, an inner circle of prophets, a named place for the end of the world, and self-destruction when the state closes in.

Its timeline

  1. c.157 or 172 CE Montanus begins prophesying in Phrygia.
  2. c.177 CE Synods in Asia Minor condemn the movement — among the earliest recorded church councils, convened specifically to handle it.
  3. c.207 CE Tertullian converts, attacking the mainstream church as the church of a number of bishops.
  4. 550 CE Justinian orders the destruction of the Pepuza shrine — the tombs of MONTANUS, PRISCILLA AND MAXIMILLA. THE EXPEDITION WAS LED BY JOHN OF EPHESUS, a monophysite bishop working for Justinian, who destroyed the holy places and the grave of Montanus personally. THE MASS SELF-IMMOLATION THAT ALLEGEDLY FOLLOWED — Montanists gathering with their wives and children into their places of worship, setting them alight and perishing — RESTS ON A SINGLE SOURCE: PROCOPIUS, SECRET HISTORY 11. THAT MATTERS. The Secret History is a bitter polemic that Procopius did not publish in his lifetime, written to portray Justinian's reign as monstrous; it is among the most contested sources in Byzantine history. ITS BIAS HERE IS UNUSUAL FOR THIS DOSSIER — it runs AGAINST THE EMPEROR, not against the sect, which gives it every motive to dramatise a mass death caused by imperial policy. The episode may well have happened. IT SHOULD NOT BE STATED AS SETTLED ON ONE HOSTILE-TO-JUSTINIAN WITNESS.

—

Founder, the New Prophecy · fl. c.157–177 CE · active c.157–c.177 CE

A Phrygian convert, possibly a former priest of Cybele, who began prophesying in the first person as God — 'I am the Lord God Almighty dwelling in a man.' With the prophetesses Priscilla and Maximilla he taught that the Paraclete was speaking directly through them, superseding church authority, and that the New Jerusalem would descend on two Phrygian villages. He demanded rigorous fasting, forbade remarriage, and encouraged believers to seek martyrdom rather than flee it. The synods convened to condemn him are among the earliest church councils on record — the institution of the council was in part invented to deal with him.

Before the law. Condemned as a heretic by multiple synods.

Where things stand. Deceased, date unknown. Movement extinct by the 6th century.

  1. c.157 or 172 CE Begins prophesying in Phrygia.
  2. c.177 CE Condemned by synods in Asia Minor.
  3. c.207 CE Tertullian, the leading Latin theologian of the age, joins the movement.
  4. 550 CE Justinian destroys the shrine at Pepuza; remaining Montanists reportedly burn themselves alive.
