I. ANTIQUITY — THE MYSTERY CULTS
Fully religious — competing forms of early Christianity
Who led it
SIMON MAGUS (the archetype, Acts 8); VALENTINUS (c.100–160), who nearly became Bishop of Rome; BASILIDES of Alexandria; CARPOCRATES and his son EPIPHANES; MARCION of Sinope, related but distinct; the prophetess Marcellina.
What it worshipped and taught
A remote unknowable true God, and beneath him a botched material world made by an ignorant craftsman-god, the DEMIURGE, identified with the God of the Hebrew Bible and called Yaldabaoth or Saklas, the fool. Salvation comes not by faith or works but by gnosis — secret knowledge of one's divine origin, delivered by a redeemer. Sophia's fall explains the existence of matter.
Who was in it
Simon Magus and Helena; Valentinus; Ptolemy; Heracleon; Basilides; Carpocrates; Epiphanes; Marcion; opponents Irenaeus, Tertullian, Hippolytus, Epiphanius of Salamis.
How it ended, or where it stands
Suppressed as heresy; textually resurrected in 1945.

Of note
THE MANDAEANS ARE THE ONLY GNOSTIC COMMUNITY TO HAVE SURVIVED CONTINUOUSLY TO THE PRESENT — but this file described them as ‘of Iraq and Iran’, AND THAT IS NO LONGER WHERE MOST OF THEM ARE. Iraq’s Mandaean community numbered 60,000–70,000 before 2003 and COLLAPSED AFTER THE INVASION, falling to roughly 5,000 by 2007; The Guardian put the remaining Iraqi population at 7,000–10,000 IN 2024. The Iranian community has also dwindled under persecution. TODAY THE LARGEST MANDAEAN POPULATIONS ARE IN AUSTRALIA (about 15,000), SWEDEN (about 13,000) AND THE UNITED STATES (12,000–15,000), out of 60,000–100,000 worldwide. The Mandaean Council of Elders reported 50 to 60 families leaving Iraq in the first five months of 2025 alone. THE SHARPEST FIGURE IS THE PRIESTHOOD: FEWER THAN FIFTY MANDAEAN PRIESTS REMAIN IN THE WORLD. A religion that outlasted every other Gnostic body for nearly two thousand years is now limited less by believers than by the number of people qualified to perform its rites.
Its timeline
- c.144 CE Marcion expelled from the church at Rome; builds a rival network with the first fixed Christian canon.
- c.180 CE Irenaeus writes Against Heresies — the main surviving description, hostile.
- c.374–377 CE EPIPHANIUS OF SALAMIS' PANARION catalogues the Borborites as THE TWENTY-SIXTH HERESY and accuses them of ritual consumption of bodily fluids — almost certainly atrocity propaganda. THE NAME ITSELF IS THE ACCUSATION. 'Borborite' is from the Greek BORBOROS, MUD OR FILTH; it means THE FILTHY ONES. IT WAS NEVER A SELF-DESIGNATION — it was bestowed by adversaries, and Epiphanius uses it precisely to equate doctrinal error with physical and moral filth. What this group called itself is not recorded. See Appendix D on the pattern.
- 4th c. CE Suppression after Nicaea; texts destroyed.
- December 1945 Nag Hammadi library found in Upper Egypt by Muhammad Ali al-Samman — 13 codices, 52 texts, including the Gospel of Thomas and the Apocryphon of John. The movement finally readable in its own words.
