Pythagorean Brotherhood

Mathematikoi and Akousmatikoi

c.530 – c.450 BCE (revivals to 3rd c. CE) · Croton and Metapontum, southern Italy

I. ANTIQUITY — THE MYSTERY CULTS

Religious-philosophical hybrid

Who led it

PYTHAGORAS of Samos (c.570 – c.495 BCE), regarded by members as semi-divine; some believed him to be Hyperborean Apollo. Members were forbidden to name him, saying instead He himself said it (autos epha).

What it worshipped and taught

Number as the substance of reality; the tetractys (triangular figure of ten points) was the object of a binding oath. Doctrine of metempsychosis. Life governed by akousmata — oral rules including vegetarianism, five years of silence upon entry, refusal to eat beans, bans on wool and on picking up what has fallen.

Who was in it

Pythagoras; his wife Theano; daughters Damo and Myia; Philolaus; Archytas of Tarentum; Hippasus of Metapontum, by legend drowned for revealing the irrationality of root two; Cylon of Croton, the rejected applicant who led the massacre.

How it ended, or where it stands

Politically destroyed by massacre and expulsion; doctrine survived through Plato.

The dead

Unknown; multiple members killed in the burnings

Of note

Displays modern high-control markers: initiation vetting, enforced silence, dietary control, communal property, information tiering (inner mathematikoi vs outer akousmatikoi), and lethal sanction for disclosure.

READ ALL OF THAT WITH THE SOURCE PROBLEM IN FRONT OF IT, WHICH THIS ENTRY DID NOT PREVIOUSLY STATE. Pythagoras wrote nothing, and the fullest account of the community — including the akousmatikoi and mathematikoi division — reaches us through IAMBLICHUS, writing around 245 to 325 CE, SEVEN OR EIGHT CENTURIES AFTER THE EVENTS, though the material probably goes back to Aristotle. WALTER BURKERT'S LORE AND SCIENCE IN ANCIENT PYTHAGOREANISM (1972) is the foundation of the modern study and is the place to see how thin the early stratum is.

THE HIGH-CONTROL READING IS THEREFORE A READING OF LATE SOURCES, NOT A DESCRIPTION OF AN OBSERVED GROUP. The pattern-matching in the sentence above is genuinely useful and it is being done on testimony written half a millennium after everyone involved was dead. Compare 004 and 016, where the same distance has led scholars to doubt whether the movement existed in the form later writers gave it.

Its timeline

  1. c.530 BCE Pythagoras emigrates from Samos to Croton and founds the community.
  2. c.510 BCE Brotherhood dominates the politics of Croton; Croton destroys Sybaris.
  3. c.509–450 BCE Anti-Pythagorean risings; the meeting house at Croton burned with members inside, allegedly at Cylon's instigation.
  4. c.495 BCE Pythagoras dies at Metapontum.
  5. 1st c. BCE onward Neopythagoreanism revives the movement in Rome; Apollonius of Tyana its most famous exponent.

Its people

Pythagoras of Samos

the Man; He Himself

Founder, the Pythagorean Brotherhood · c.570 – c.495 BCE · active c.530–c.495 BCE

Emigrated from Samos to Croton around 530 BCE and founded a community that was simultaneously a school, a religious order and a political faction. Members surrendered property, kept five years of silence on entry, followed dietary and behavioural rules whose reasoning was withheld from the outer circle, and referred to him only obliquely. He taught the transmigration of souls and the doctrine that reality is number. The brotherhood ruled Croton for a generation before a rejected applicant, Cylon, led a massacre against it. Almost nothing survives in his own words — everything is later, and much is legend.

Before the law. None recorded.

Where things stand. Deceased c.495 BCE.

  1. c.530 BCE Founds the community at Croton.
  2. c.510 BCE Brotherhood dominant in Croton politics; Sybaris destroyed.
  3. c.509 BCE Anti-Pythagorean rising; the meeting house burned with members inside.
  4. c.495 BCE Dies at Metapontum.
