I. ANTIQUITY — THE MYSTERY CULTS
Fully religious
Who led it
No central authority. Attributed to the mythic poet ORPHEUS. Propagated by itinerant priests (orpheotelestai) selling purification rites — mocked by Plato in the Republic as door-to-door absolution salesmen.
What it worshipped and taught
Dionysus Zagreus, torn apart by the Titans and reborn; humanity formed from Titan ash and therefore carrying an inherited stain. Taught reincarnation, the body as tomb of the soul (soma sema), vegetarianism, and escape from the wheel of rebirth. Gold leaf tablets buried with initiates carried instructions for the underworld: I am a child of Earth and starry Heaven.
Who was in it
Orpheus; Musaeus; Onomacritus, accused of forging Orphic oracles in the 6th c. BCE. Doctrinally influenced Pythagoras, Empedocles and Plato.
How it ended, or where it stands
Dissolved into philosophy rather than suppressed.

READ THIS ENTRY THE WAY YOU READ 016 CATHARISM: THE QUESTION IS NOT ONLY WHAT THEY BELIEVED BUT WHETHER THERE WAS A THEY.
Orphism is conventionally described as the first clearly attested Western doctrine of inherited sin and of transmigration of souls, and this file said exactly that without qualification. THE LEADING MODERN TREATMENT DISPUTES BOTH HALVES OF THE FRAME. RADCLIFFE EDMONDS III, in REDEFINING ANCIENT ORPHISM (2013), argues that ORPHIC WAS A LABEL APPLIED POLEMICALLY to religious practice that struck observers as extraordinary — marked by claims to unusual purity, sanctity, antiquity and strangeness — RATHER THAN THE NAME OF AN ORGANISED RELIGION WITH A CREED. He treats the material as a family resemblance, not an essence. AND HE ARGUES SPECIFICALLY FOR AN ORPHISM WITHOUT THE INHERITED-GUILT MYTH, which is precisely the doctrine this entry was crediting it with.
The evidence is real: the gold leaves are real objects with real text on them, and the Derveni papyrus exists. WHAT IS CONTESTED IS THE JOIN — whether those scattered survivals were ever one movement, or whether the movement was assembled later, first by ancient polemicists and then by nineteenth and twentieth-century scholars looking for a pagan precursor to Christian original sin. THIS IS THE SAME FAILURE THIS DOSSIER RECORDS IN APPENDIX D: A GROUP KNOWN THROUGH THE VOCABULARY OF PEOPLE WHO WERE NOT IN IT. The difference from Catharism is that nobody was burned for this one.
