Salem and the Ergotism Hypothesis
The Salem witch trials; the moldy bread theory
1692 (the explanation disputed from 1976) · Salem Village and Salem Town, Massachusetts Bay Colony
XVI. CONTAGION — SYMPTOMS THAT SPREAD WITHOUT A PATHOGEN
Puritan New England. The accusations were made, tried and defended in explicitly religious terms.

### Its timeline
- JANUARY–FEBRUARY 1692 Two girls in the household of the Reverend Samuel Parris begin having fits. A doctor can find no physical cause and bewitchment is suggested.
- 1692 Accusations spread far beyond the village. MORE THAN 200 PEOPLE ARE ACCUSED by the usual modern count; lower estimates of about 150 also appear.
- 1692 NINETEEN PEOPLE ARE HANGED. GILES COREY IS PRESSED TO DEATH under stones for refusing to plead. AT LEAST FIVE MORE DIE IN CUSTODY.
- 12 OCTOBER 1692 GOVERNOR WILLIAM PHIPS stops the proceedings of the Court of Oyer and Terminer.
- 1693 THE NEW SUPERIOR COURT OF JUDICATURE DOES NOT ALLOW SPECTRAL EVIDENCE, AND THE PROSECUTIONS COLLAPSE. It convicts three people and Phips pardons them — which tells you what had been carrying the earlier convictions.
- APRIL 1976 LINNDA CAPORAEL PUBLISHES ERGOTISM: THE SATAN LOOSED IN SALEM? IN SCIENCE, proposing that the afflictions were ergot poisoning from mouldy rye. It is elegant, widely reported, and enters popular culture permanently.
- DECEMBER 1976 SPANOS AND GOTTLIEB PUBLISH A FULL REBUTTAL IN THE SAME JOURNAL, EIGHT MONTHS LATER. Ergotism produces symptoms the Salem record does not report. And a contaminated food supply would strike HOUSE BY HOUSE, taking whole families including adults and infants — not a scattered set of mostly young women across separate households. They conclude the evidence does not support the hypothesis.
- 1976–present THE REBUTTAL WON AMONG HISTORIANS AND LOST IN PUBLIC. Specialists overwhelmingly favour social and political explanations — village factionalism, property and ministry disputes, frontier war refugees and trauma. THE MOULDY BREAD STORY REMAINS THE ONE MOST PEOPLE HAVE HEARD.

### Linnda Caporael
Linnda R. Caporael
Proposed the ergotism explanation for Salem · — · active 1976–present
Before the law. None.
Where things stand. No death record was found at the time of writing. THIS FILE RECORDS A REFUTED HYPOTHESIS, NOT MISCONDUCT — she proposed a testable explanation, it was tested in the open literature, and it failed. That is the process working exactly as it should.
- APRIL 1976 Publishes the ergotism hypothesis in Science.
- DECEMBER 1976 Spanos and Gottlieb publish a full rebuttal in Science.
- 1976–present The hypothesis is rejected in the scholarly literature and thrives in the popular one.

Before the law. None.
Where things stand. Deceased 1994. HIS DISTRIBUTION ARGUMENT IS THE ONE THAT SETTLED THE SALEM QUESTION, and it generalises: it is the test to apply whenever a physical cause is proposed for a social pattern.
- 1975 Appointed at Carleton University; directs the Laboratory for Experimental Hypnosis.
- DECEMBER 1976 Publishes the Salem rebuttal in Science with Jack Gottlieb.
- 1970s–90s Publishes extensively on hypnosis as social behaviour rather than altered state, and on the construction of multiple-personality presentations.
- 6 JUNE 1994 DIES IN A SINGLE-ENGINE PLANE CRASH at Edgartown, Massachusetts, aged 52.
