### Its timeline
- 1926 Founded in Guadalajara by Eusebio Joaquín González.
- 2019 Naasón Joaquín García arrested at Los Angeles International Airport on California state charges.
- 8 JUNE 2022 PLEADS GUILTY in California to state counts including forcible oral copulation of a minor; SENTENCED TO MORE THAN 16 YEARS (commonly reported as 16 years 8 months). Reporting differs on whether the plea covered two or three counts. Survivors and observers criticised the deal as lenient.
- 10 SEPTEMBER 2025 THE US ATTORNEY FOR THE SOUTHERN DISTRICT OF NEW YORK UNSEALS A FEDERAL INDICTMENT charging Naasón, his mother Eva García de Joaquín and four others with racketeering conspiracy, sex trafficking and child exploitation — including allegations of the production of sadistic child sexual abuse material.
- 23 SEPTEMBER 2025 At his first appearance in a New York federal court NAASÓN JOAQUÍN GARCÍA, 56, PLEADS NOT GUILTY. BAIL IS DENIED on the ground that he poses a risk of flight. The case is UNITED STATES v. GARCIA, 1:25-cr-00370, before JUDGE LORETTA A. PRESKA.
- 2025 THE INDICTMENT’S SCOPE IS WIDER THAN ONE MAN. It alleges that García and five others exploited the church over decades to enable the systematic sexual abuse of children and women — for the gratification of García AND OF HIS FATHER, Samuel Joaquín Flores, who died in 2014. The alleged enterprise spans two generations of the leadership.
- 10–11 MARCH 2026 A TRIAL DATE IS SET: 15 MARCH 2027. Judge Preska fixes 25 July 2026 for defence motions. The prosecution has already handed over more than 2.2 MILLION documents and files. Sosa, Rangel García and García Peña remain AT LARGE, believed to be in Mexico.
- 22 JULY 2026 THE RELIGIOUS-LIBERTY DEFENCE FAILS AT THE FIRST ATTEMPT. Judge Preska rejects the argument and refuses access to grand jury material, holding in substance that no law permits sex trafficking because it is tied to a religious belief.
- AS AT 16 SEPTEMBER 2026 NO TRIAL AND NO VERDICT. He is held at the METROPOLITAN DETENTION CENTER IN BROOKLYN, not in California, while the state sentence runs. The pre-trial hearing set for 23 September has been put back to 27 OCTOBER 2026 at his lawyers’ request.
