### Its timeline
- 1955 Founded in Bihar.
- 1971 Sarkar imprisoned on a murder conspiracy charge; he fasts for over five years in prison.
- 1978 The Sydney Hilton Hotel bombing kills three; three Ananda Marga members are convicted and later PARDONED, the convictions now widely regarded as a miscarriage of justice.
- 30 APRIL 1982 THE BIJON SETU MASSACRE. SEVENTEEN ANANDA MARGA MEMBERS — monks and nuns, the split usually given as sixteen and one or fifteen and two — travelling by taxi to an educational conference at their Tiljala headquarters are DRAGGED FROM THE VEHICLES AT THREE LOCATIONS SIMULTANEOUSLY, beaten to death and SET ON FIRE in broad daylight in central Calcutta.
- MARCH 2012 After thirty years of demands, a SINGLE-MEMBER JUDICIAL COMMISSION under the retired Calcutta High Court judge AMITAVA LALA is constituted; it begins taking evidence the following year.
- SEPTEMBER 2019 THE COMMISSION REPORTS — AND THE REPORT IS NOT PUBLISHED. It was submitted to the West Bengal assembly and its findings have never been made public. Press accounts of the proceedings say evidence was given of a meeting of local CPI(M) figures at Picnic Garden in February 1982, some three months before the killings, at which the Ananda Margis were discussed, and they name individuals said to have attended. THIS FILE DOES NOT REPEAT THOSE NAMES. The report is unpublished, the accounts of it come largely from sources aligned with one side, and nothing in them has been tested in a criminal court.
- 1982–2026 NO ONE HAS EVER BEEN CONVICTED of the killings. Forty-four years on, Ananda Marga is still demanding a judicial inquiry by a sitting Supreme Court judge, which has never been granted.
- 1978 Sarkar acquitted on appeal and released.
- 1990 Sarkar dies; the movement splits into factions.
