Kitchener's roughly 25,000 troops, with artillery and machine guns, destroy a Mahdist army usually given as 35,000 to 50,000, armed largely with spears and swords, in a matter of hours. MAHDIST DEAD ARE GIVEN AS 10,000 OR 12,000 DEPENDING ON SOURCE, with a further 10,000–13,000 wounded and about 5,000 captured. ANGLO-EGYPTIAN LOSSES WERE 47–48 DEAD and 382 wounded. Winston Churchill, aged 23, rode in the charge of the 21st Lancers and wrote THE RIVER WAR about it in 1899 — AND SOFTENED HIS CRITICISM OF KITCHENER IN THE SECOND EDITION OF 1902.
- 1899 The Khalifa is killed; the state ends.
