### Its timeline
- 1962 Church founded by Kwon Shin-chan and Yoo Byung-eun.
- 1992 A conservative Christian denomination declares it a cult.
- 1980s–2010s Yoo builds a business empire; markets his own photography internationally at great expense, including Grand Central Terminal (2011), the Tuileries Garden in Paris (2012) and the Palace of Versailles (2013).
- 16 APRIL 2014 THE SEWOL FERRY DISASTER. The overloaded, illegally modified ferry capsizes off Jindo. 304 PEOPLE DIE, most of them schoolchildren who obeyed instructions to remain in their cabins. The captain and crew abandon ship first.
- April–May 2014 Yoo becomes the most wanted man in South Korea, facing allegations of tax evasion, embezzlement and negligence. The reward rises from 50 million won to 500 MILLION WON (about 490,000 US dollars) by 25 May.
- JUNE–JULY 2014 A heavily decomposed body is found in a plum orchard near Suncheon in June and confirmed as Yoo by DNA and fingerprints in July. No sign of alcohol, poison or violence is found; the cause of death cannot be determined.
- NOVEMBER 2014 – APRIL 2015 Captain Lee Joon-seok is first sentenced to 36 years for negligence; on 28 April 2015 an appeals court convicts him of MURDER and sentences him to life.
- 2016–2017 The disaster feeds the protests that end in President Park Geun-hye's impeachment, upheld on 10 March 2017.
- 2018–2019 THE COMPENSATION RULINGS. Courts order the state and the ferry company to pay 80 MILLION WON TO EACH SURVIVOR who sued, finding the coastguard and the operator negligent; the Seoul High Court upholds the award for 19 survivors.
