### Its timeline
- 21 March 1967 Manson released from Terminal Island; goes to San Francisco during the Summer of Love and begins gathering followers.
- 1968 The group settles at Spahn Ranch in Chatsworth; the White Album is released in November.
- 27 July 1969 Gary Hinman murdered by Bobby Beausoleil; PIG written on the wall in Hinman's blood.
- 8–9 AUGUST 1969 TATE MURDERS. Watson, Atkins, Krenwinkel and Kasabian go to 10050 Cielo Drive. Five people are killed. PIG is written on the door in Sharon Tate's blood.
- 9–10 AUGUST 1969 LaBIANCA MURDERS. Leno and Rosemary LaBianca killed in Los Feliz. DEATH TO PIGS, RISE and HEALTER SKELTER (misspelled) written in blood.
- 12 October 1969 The group is arrested at Barker Ranch, initially for auto theft and arson.
- November 1969 Susan Atkins talks to a cellmate; the case breaks.
- 15 JUNE 1970 – 29 MARCH 1971 THE TRIAL, AT THE TIME THE LONGEST AND MOST EXPENSIVE IN AMERICAN HISTORY — over nine months, at an estimated cost of 3 MILLION DOLLARS IN 1971 MONEY. THE JURY WAS SEQUESTERED FOR 225 DAYS, longer than any jury before it (one source gives 244). Manson carves an X, later a swastika, into his forehead; the female defendants follow suit and shave their heads.
- 25 JANUARY 1971 After MORE THAN 42 HOURS OF DELIBERATION ACROSS NINE DAYS, the jury convicts all four of first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder.
- 29 MARCH 1971 The penalty phase concludes with death recommended for all four; the sentences are formally imposed on 19 APRIL 1971. Watson is convicted separately in October 1971.
- 18 February 1972 California v. Anderson abolishes the state death penalty; all sentences commuted to life.
- 19 November 2017 Manson dies in prison aged 83. Atkins died in 2009; Van Houten was paroled in July 2023.

### Charles 'Tex' Watson
Charles Denton Watson
Principal killer, the Manson Family · born 2 December 1945 · active 1968–1971
Before the law. CONVICTED of seven counts of first-degree murder and one of conspiracy. Serving life.
Where things stand. Incarcerated in California, AND DUE FOR A PAROLE HEARING IN OCTOBER 2026 — which makes this one of the most perishable entries in the dossier; check it before relying on it. ON THE FACILITY, THIS FILE DECLARES UNCERTAINTY RATHER THAN GUESSING. It previously named the RICHARD J. DONOVAN CORRECTIONAL FACILITY; recent reporting instead places him in the Sacramento area. He has been transferred more than once over five decades and the accessible sources disagree, SO NO FACILITY IS ASSERTED HERE. A NOTE ON A SOURCE ERROR CAUGHT IN PASSING: coverage of the October 2026 hearing describes him as 79. HE WAS BORN 2 DECEMBER 1945 AND IS 80. Age arithmetic in press coverage of long-serving prisoners is routinely wrong, and this file does not adopt it.
- 1968 Meets Manson; moves to Spahn Ranch.
- 8–9 August 1969 Leads the Tate murders; kills or participates in killing all five victims.
- 9–10 August 1969 Leads the LaBianca murders.
- 1971 Convicted of seven counts of first-degree murder; sentenced to death, commuted 1972.
- 1975 Converts to evangelical Christianity in prison.
- 2021 Denied parole for the eighteenth time.
- 2025 WAIVES his right to a parole hearing for three years. HIS NEXT HEARING IS NOW 2029.

### Patricia Krenwinkel
Katie
Killer, the Manson Family · born 3 December 1947 · active 1967–1971
Before the law. CONVICTED of seven counts of first-degree murder. Serving life; over 55 years served.
Where things stand. Incarcerated at the California Institution for Women, at Chino. She has now served over 55 years — the longest-serving woman in the California prison system. THE PAROLE HISTORY IS THE LIVE PART. A Board of Parole Hearings panel GRANTED her parole in 2022 and GOVERNOR NEWSOM REVERSED IT. A panel has since RECOMMENDED PAROLE AGAIN — the second such recommendation in three years. SHE REMAINS INCARCERATED, but this status is contingent on a gubernatorial decision and can change without warning.
- 1967 Meets Manson; abandons her job and life within days.
- 8–9 August 1969 Participates in the Tate murders.
- 9–10 August 1969 Participates in the LaBianca murders; writes the wall messages.
- 1971 Convicted; sentenced to death, commuted 1972.
- 2022 Found suitable for parole; reversed by the Governor.
- MAY 2025 FOUND SUITABLE FOR PAROLE AGAIN by the California Board of Parole Hearings, aged 78.
- OCTOBER 2025 GOVERNOR NEWSOM REVERSES IT, finding she had not shown sufficient insight into the causes of her crimes and remained a current danger. A further hearing is scheduled.

- 1968 Joins the group aged 19.

### Lynette Fromme
Squeaky
Manson Family; would-be presidential assassin · born 22 October 1948 · active 1967–1975
Before the law. CONVICTED of attempted assassination of the President, 1975. Paroled 2009.
Where things stand. Living, aged 77, at liberty since her release in 2009 — confirmed to 2025. SHE PUBLISHED A MEMOIR IN 2018. A DISTINCTION THIS FILE SHOULD KEEP SHARP: she had NO PART IN THE TATE–LaBIANCA MURDERS and was at neither scene. Her life sentence was for the ATTEMPTED ASSASSINATION OF PRESIDENT GERALD FORD at Sacramento on 5 SEPTEMBER 1975 — a separate crime, committed after Manson was already imprisoned, by a follower who stayed loyal to him.
- 1967 The first person Manson recruits.
- 1969–71 Not charged in the murders; runs the remnant Family and stages vigils at the trial.
- 5 SEPTEMBER 1975 Attempts to assassinate President Gerald Ford in Sacramento.

### Bobby Beausoleil
Cupid
Manson Family; first killer · born 6 November 1947 · active 1968–1969
Before the law. CONVICTED of first-degree murder, 1970. Still incarcerated after 55 years.
Where things stand. Incarcerated in California — BY GUBERNATORIAL REVERSAL, NOT BY BOARD DECISION. He WAS GRANTED PAROLE IN JANUARY 2025, and THE GOVERNOR REVERSED IT ON 2 MAY 2025. He served many years at the Oregon State Penitentiary but was returned to California custody, and the CDCR has listed him at the CALIFORNIA MEDICAL FACILITY. TWO CORRECTIONS ARE NOW RECORDED IN THIS ONE FIELD: an earlier version said Oregon, which was out of date, and a later version said simply 'incarcerated', which concealed that he had been found suitable for release and overruled. THE SAME PATTERN GOVERNS KRENWINKEL (L123). In this cohort the parole board and the governor's office routinely disagree, so 'incarcerated' describes the outcome of a political decision rather than a settled legal status.
- 1968 Associates with the Family; also active in the Los Angeles music scene.
- 27 July 1969 Murders Gary Hinman; writes POLITICAL PIGGY on the wall in Hinman's blood.
- 6 August 1969 Arrested in Hinman's car — two days before the Tate murders.
- 1970 Convicted of first-degree murder; death sentence commuted 1972.
- 2019 Found suitable for parole; reversed by the Governor.
- JANUARY 2025 GRANTED PAROLE.
- 2 MAY 2025 THE GOVERNOR REVERSES IT. His next hearing is not until 2029.

### Vincent Bugliosi
—
Prosecutor, the Manson trial · 18 August 1934 – 6 June 2015 · active 1969–1971
Before the law. Prosecutor. Won 105 of 106 felony trials, including 21 murder convictions.
Where things stand. Deceased 2015. NOTE: the Helter Skelter motive has been challenged by later writers who argue the killings were more mundane — drug debts and copycat cover — and that Bugliosi overbuilt the racial-apocalypse theory because he needed a motive that reached Manson.
- 1969 Assigned the Tate–LaBianca prosecution.
- 15 June 1970 – 29 March 1971 Conducts the trial; secures convictions against Manson, Atkins, Krenwinkel and Van Houten.
