### Its timeline
- c.400 BCE–200 CE Xiongnu confederation; the earliest recognisable sky-cult.
- 552–744 CE Göktürk khaganates — gök means both sky and blue.
- 732–735 CE Orkhon inscriptions erected.
- 1206 CE Genghis Khan proclaimed; he attributes his conquests to Tengri's mandate.
- c.1240 CE Mongol religious tolerance — the empire exempts clergy of all religions from taxation and hosts formal interfaith debates at Karakorum between Buddhists, Muslims, Christians and Daoists. This is one of the earliest state policies of religious pluralism anywhere.
- 1253–55 CE William of Rubruck's mission; the fullest European account.
- c.1300–1500 CE The western khanates convert to Islam; Mongolia proper converts largely to Tibetan Buddhism from 1578.
- 1990s–present Post-Soviet revival, sometimes as a genuine religious movement and sometimes as an ethnic-nationalist alternative to Islam or Orthodoxy.
