- c.700–1000 CE Transmission and elaboration in Arabic; the Emerald Tablet appears.
- 1460 CE A monk brings a Greek manuscript of the Corpus Hermeticum to Florence. Cosimo de' Medici orders Ficino to stop translating Plato and translate this first, believing it older and more authoritative.
- 1471 CE Ficino's Latin translation printed; Hermeticism becomes central to Renaissance thought.
- 1614 CE Isaac Casaubon demonstrates on linguistic grounds that the texts are Roman-era Greek, not ancient Egyptian. The intellectual prestige collapses almost overnight.

- 1614–17 Rosicrucian manifestos; the esoteric line continues underground.
- 1888 Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn founded, reviving the label.
