- 551–479 BCE Life of Confucius.
- c.372–289 BCE Mencius argues human nature is innately good and requires cultivation.
- c.310–235 BCE Xunzi argues the opposite — nature is crooked and must be straightened by ritual and education. The disagreement is never resolved and both remain canonical.
- 213–210 BCE Qin Shi Huang's burning of books and reported burying of scholars.
- 136 BCE Emperor Wu of Han makes Confucianism the state orthodoxy.
- 605 CE Imperial examination system established.
- 1130–1200 CE Zhu Xi creates Neo-Confucianism, absorbing Buddhist and Daoist metaphysics; his commentaries become the examination standard in 1313.
- 1472–1529 Wang Yangming's school of mind: knowledge and action are one.
- 1905 Examination system abolished.
- 1919 May Fourth Movement attacks Confucianism as the source of China's backwardness.
- 1966–76 Cultural Revolution; the Anti-Lin Anti-Confucius campaign; Qufu temple damaged.
- 2004–present State rehabilitation. Confucius Institutes open worldwide; harmonious society becomes official Party language.
