### Its timeline
- 1860 CE Choe Je-u's revelation.
- 1864 CE He is executed by the Joseon state for heresy and sedition.
- 1894–95 CE The Donghak Peasant Revolution — a mass uprising against corruption, landlords and foreign influence. The government invites Chinese troops to suppress it, Japan sends its own in response, and the result is the First Sino-Japanese War and the beginning of Japan's takeover of Korea. Casualties are estimated in the hundreds of thousands.
- 1905 CE Son Byong-hi renames the movement Cheondogyo and reorganises it as a religion rather than a political movement.
- 1 March 1919 CE The March First Movement. Of the 33 signatories of the Korean Declaration of Independence, 15 are Cheondoists, alongside Christians and Buddhists. Japanese forces kill thousands of demonstrators.
- 1945–48 CE Division of Korea splits the movement; the northern majority is absorbed into the DPRK's political structure.
- 1948 CE The Chondoist Chongu Party is created in North Korea as a satellite party.
- Present A small but respected presence in South Korea, honoured chiefly for its role in the independence movement.
